REI Folding Utensil Setis rated3.8571out of5by7.
Rated3out of5byfromI like them!I really like having the chop sticks. I prefer them over a spork if I am eating ramen. Is the spork too small? Yes, but let's face it, sporks just don't work well for soup. I drink the liquid and use the spork to scrape the food up the side to my mouth. it would gave been better with a fork and spoon. We all carry knives... Oh yeah, the spork unscrews if you are left handed and not careful. Change to a spoon and fork and make a lefty set or finer threads and it would be a 5 star item.

Rated5out of5byfromExcellent form and functionThe design on these utensils are fantastic. I love the length of the spork, as it makes for easy mixing of deep bags of dehydrated food. They are sturdy, and very easy to set up and breakdown. When folded, they are very compact and can easily fit into any space you wish to store them in. I really don't think I'll be using the knife any time soon, so the spork is pretty much all I carry.

Rated4out of5byfromTwo folding utensils and a microphone. .I got these for my minimalish setup. I keep them in my Ketalist set, and use them with dehydrated food heated by Biolite stove (I think that's the -ish part of my minimalish setup). I didn't use the knife cause all my food was ready to eat after heating, and I always have a knife with me when I'm camping anyway. But the spork was great. I think the bowl for the spoon part could have been a little bigger, but otherwise, the extended length was perfect for eating dehydrated food out of baggies. And, it was easy to clean. The set snaps together much like tent poles; there's an elastic that helps you straighten them out, and then you screw the plastic sections into the metal collars. The plastic/metal thread may strip if you're not careful but it's for eating, not belaying. Try not to overexert yourself, muscles. All in all, nice, simple, and inexpensive. I'll leave the knife at home to reduce the -ish in my minimalishness.

Rated4out of5byfromfits neatly into my compact cooking setThe long handle on these utensils makes them particularly useful for mixing freeze dried foods with water directly in the bag. I don't find the knife particularly useful--I would prefer to buy the spork separately. The only very minor complaint is that the 3 sections lock together with threads and are a bit easy to unlock/unscrew while using the utensils. I would like to see a slightly more robust locking mechanism on future versions. It's not a big issue though. Other reviewers have noted that the spork is too small and I agree. I assume it was designed this way to make the package more compact, which is useful to me because I stash the utensils inside my cooking set. That being said, there is no reason why the spork couldn't be made bigger (and I would still fit inside my set). REI should make a larger version.

Rated5out of5byfromBest utensil I've used!I read the reviews on here complaining about the Spork size, and since I like using smaller spoons anyway, decided to go ahead and buy this product. I'm glad I did; the Spork is not too small! Maybe if you NEED to shovel huge mouthfuls of food at a time, yeah...but otherwise, these are perfect. I was torn between a solid Spork or those expensive Snow Peak chopsticks; then I found these. Spork, knife, AND chopsticks? Collapsible? Lightweight? Check, check, and double-check. The perfect utensil. Super easy to clean, too, and more easily stowable than its one-piece solid counterparts. When I whipped these out on my camping trip upstate this weekend, everyone with the LiteMyFire Spork and Swiss Army type utensils was oohing and aahing at these. While they were spending time trying to Tetris fit their utensils into their mess kits, I was already packed up and ready to do stuff. It creates some jealousy, I must say! Long review short -- buy these. They ARE well worth it.

Rated2out of5byfromSpork Too SmallI agree with everything in the previous review by "Mistervee123" I saw this on the website, and put it on my Christmas wish list without examining it in person. I am often trying to minimize my mess kit for backpacking, and in the past have made several sporks and spoons that break down into smaller parts that fit in the collapsible bowl I use. This looked like a great commercially available option. I was a bit disappointed on Christmas morning when I opened my present. As soon as I took the spork out of the cool little mesh bag, I could see it was way too small. It looks like it's made for a 3 year old. I showed it to my son who laughed, and said "It's so tiny". I tried it out with foods I take backpacking, and it was a bit frustrating. It is terrible with liquids and soups - barely holds a teaspoon. The tines on the spork are too long, making it hard to scoop liquids. Ramen is a challenge as well. Although its long length does makes it a good item to reach deep into Mountain House bags with. I think I'm going to modify mine like the other reviewer did and see how that works. Bottom line - I wouldn't recommend it in its current form. If they enlarge the spork, it would be a great product. I don't know who did the product testing and signed off on this item, but they missed the mark.

Rated4out of5byfromGreat idea but a little smallI may be opening myself to ridicule this review and my "customization" of an REI product. I saw this utensil set in the REI Ann Arbor store, and it immediately caught my attention. It was such a cool, unusual design. I looked it over, and pondered about buying it for 10 minutes. The chopstick end, I knew I probably wouldn't use when backpacking. I'm usually pretty hungry, and I want to get as much in me quickly before the chow gets cold. I looked over the spork part, which, unfortunately is only about as big as a small teaspoon. Sure the set was cool, but it just wasn't practical for the way I eat in the woods. I was about to put it back when I spied a big REI plastic soup spoon in the same section. A lightbulb went off. What if I combined the two? Then it would be useable even for a glutton like me. I like to experiment; I own a Dremel--and I'm not afraid to use it! You can see the results in the photo. REI designers, take note. Being in the woods is Feng Shui enough for me. When I want to eat though, I want a utensil more the size of a snow shovel than an espresso spoon. How about a full size soup spoon and fork in this design? Another suggestion: I know the short threads make it quick and easy to get together and apart, but I'd recommend adding another thread or two to make the sections hold together better while eating with them. That said, I'll come back to the original theme: what a cool product idea this is! And it would be even better if REI came up with additional, larger utensils such a a full size soup spoon and fork in a set. That would be really cool. Oh, okay, the knife might be okay too...for somebody other than me.
