Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

Revolt went through the trouble to disallow you to recharge any other batteries save the revolt batteries, so leave your favorite rechargables at home. The only place to buy the batteries is online. Last I checked you could not even buy them at the rei store. The headlamp is more expensive because of the recharge function. Should you buy the batteries online, they come in boxes of 4 not 3 (which is what the revolt headlamp needs).

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

I bought this headlamp for my first backpacking trip (Section Hiked The AT - Max Patch to Hotsprings) and was very impressed with it from the start. It worked well around the camp and even better when I decided to do some night hiking. The beam really lights up the trail and it made it easy to make my way down the trail. I can see my self getting many years of use out of it around the house, camping, fishing and on the trail.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

This is a great headlamp with many lighting options. It is easy to switch between light options once you learn the button sequences. With the rechargable batteries fully charged, the light doesn't seem to stay bright as long as one would expect. (maybe 25 minutes before the light output begins to diminish) I have not tried it with regular batteries but they would need to be available to have this headlamp working on extended trips. All and all a great light for jogging the neighborhood or a one night camping trip.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

This is my second BD headlamp and I've liked them both. The other is the Storm and had its pluses but for me IMO this is just as good or better. I didn't need a new headlamp, but I saw this and wanted it for extend trips begin able to charge off external battery chargers. I wish it had the IP water rating as the Storm, but with the USB port I guess that be hard. I also have liked the software that drives the lights modes. The quality is good in feel and durability.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

This is a really good backpacking headlight. I had an old Ion headlamp strap lying around. I took off the big strap that this Revolt comes with (IMO useless & too big), & used thr Ion stretchy headstrap.

The Revolts strap weighs 0.8 oz, too much.

The Revolt with the smaller elastic strap now weighs 2.8 oz, only 11 grams (0.4 oz), more than the Petzl Zipka Plus 2 headlight.

But, the Revolt's lumens are Sooo much more,I can finally hike in the dark.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

I just returned from a trip to Death Valley via motorcycle. The Revolt comes with the required rechargable AAA and standard Alkalines! The charge cable is a standard Micro USB found on many phones, like Androids, so I didn't need an extra cable! I just took turns charging the light and my phone. The battery life was good enough that for the 1-2 hrs a night that it was necessary, it didnt need to be charged too often. I charged it every couple of days, but even that didn't seem necessary!

My only disappointment is that it does not remember the dimmed setting when turning it back on, not too big of a deal.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

Contrary to some of the other reviews, I've found this headlamp to be excellent. I think the problems that other reviewers experienced could have been avoided by reading the instruction packet, or carefully reading the info on the box. No where do the manufactuers claim that you will get 70 hrs of light with the highest beam. To the contrary, it says plainly on the box (and in the manual) that 70 hrs is only for the lowest beam setting. The highest beam will last for around 15 hrs with good batteries, which is still pretty excellent in my opinon.

Pros: 3 different lights to choose from - Very bright main LED for spotlighting/looking further ahead, 2 LEDs for viewing your close surroundings, and 2 red LEDs to preserve your nightvision. The last two can also be set to a strobe setting. The brightness of all of these different lights can be adjusted to suit your needs - all you do is hold down the top button until the appropriate level of brightness is achieved.

As an amateur astronomer, I find the red LED feature particularly useful as it preserves my night vision. I also put the red LED on strobe when I'm riding my bike at night for extra protection.

This model comes with 3 rechargable AAA batteries that charge in the headlamp.

                      Cons:
The only thing I would like to see is more adjustability of the beam angle. There are only 3 preset angles you can adjust to. I'd like to be able to adjust along the whole spectrum.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

This review focuses only on the batteries and recharging of the batteries.Having had a bad experience with a black diamond headlamp in the past, we thought we would NEVER again buy one. But when Backpacker Magazine's "Gear Guide 2013" made the Revolt one of its' "Editor's Choice Award" winners, stating on page 30 and I quote, "The housing also serves as a dock for other NiMH rechargeable batteries, so you can use the headlamp to juice up all your rechargeable AAA's", we were sold. The rei website did show revolt documentation stating only revolt batteries could be recharged. Having been told the same thing by many other battery charges, who want to encourage you to use only their batteries, we went with Backpacker Magazines word and bought the revolt anyway. Backpacker to our disappointment was wrong, so you must take the tester reviews of Backpacker with skepticism. Here's how the revolt recharging really works: 1. Should you attempt to charge your non-revolt AAA's, the charger will blink red, (like many other chargers). Don't assume the blinking will turn to green, (again like many other chargers) it won't ever turn green because the blinking red is an error to let you know it has detected non-revolt batteries. 2. The Revolt headlamp is more expensive because of the recharge function.3. The Revolt batteries aren't better than other NiMH's, so the primary reason to buy them is to recharge them with your headlamp. If one can use another charger to charge revolts is not something we tested. 4. The price for the revolt batteries is the same as other brands, at least for now. 5. Should you want to buy new revolt batteries for your headlamp you will get stuck with an extra one, as they come in boxes of four, despite the headlamp needing only three. (Sure use the extra one for your other gadgets). 6. The revolt batteries are only available via the rei website as opposed to the rei store, so be sure to buy them ahead of time. If you are still reading this review, you may be asking yourself, despite the above, "why such a low rating". Any company, or product that goes out of its' way to hold one hostage to their technology is not a company we support and just for that they get a 1 rating, because 0 is not available, besides there are better headlamp products available on the market.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

This headlamp has similar beam options as other headlamps such as the Spot, with smaller wide beam LEDs on the sides of the bright narrow spot lens in the center. You can easily switch between the wide or narrow beams by pressing the button multiple times and if you want to keep the longest run times, then just keep the beams dimmed down from their highest levels. The fact that you can switch from the rechargeable batteries to standard types, means that you can keep it running with spare batteries when you are away from a charging source for too long. The USB rechargeable feature is really handy though, since it easily connects to my car or a solar charger.

The bulkiness mentioned by the other reviewer isn't an issue and all headlamps that include the batters in the headlamp itself, as opposed to in a separate box in the back of the strap, will be a bit bulkier, but that's never been an issue and it's great to keep the back of the strap clean so it is more comfortable to wear with your head on a pillow.

Comments about Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp:

I have had the headlamp for a couple of backpacking trips and it works perfect for my needs. The adjustable brightness is a huge advantage over the headlamps I have had in the past. It is a little heavier, but the brightness is worth it. The USB charging works perfect and charges from my solar charger and in my car. I also like the ability to use regular AAA batteries when I need to. I really like this lamp.
