Comments about Zippo Hand Warmer:
I've read mixed reviews about these little hand warmers, but I was tired of buying disposable hand warmers and when I thought about realized I carried as much weight in disposables as I will carry with this (and I still have to pack out the disposable when they're expended, so no weight savings there). This little thing worked awesome. I always test my gear before attempting to utilize it on the trail, so my testing was done at home with outside temperatures around 40 degrees F. The instructions say to fill it with two cups the first fill and this seemed to be necessary for me to get get them to light as trying to use only half of the filler cup was not enough to get the the catalyst burn process started. After filling it to the brim twice with the filler cup and replacing the catalyst cap I poured a little bit of fuel on the face of the catalyst and ignited it (there was a BIG flame). This flame slowly settled down and spots of faint glowing could be seen on the catalytic material. I then placed the metal cover on and slipped in into it little black pouch. This thing product a perfect amount of heat and seemed to be most effective when slipped inside a pocket. It had a little bit of lighter fluid smell (which won't matter outside), but I obviously would never use it in a tent because of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. When I went to bed I left it on the back porch and when I checked it in the morning it was still keeping warming (easily a 12 hour burn as I filled it around 6pm the nigh before). I'd say these are excellent for car camping, even cold weather backpacking when the alternative is stuffing a ton of heavy single use (iron oxide) hand warmers in your pack. A++
