Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter Plus is rated 3.7887 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from my favorite filter What a cool little filter. It takes up no space in your backpack, weighs next to nothing, and has the best actual filter in its class. I have only used this filter for 1 summer season, and am ready to bust it out again soon. Quirky: If you get little creative, you can use the filter more efficiently. To use the bags, first you have to fill them. It is a pain to have to get so low to the water source and wait for the bag to fill (same with a pump). I only use the 64 oz bag which will usually only fill to 90%. Also, you need a deep enough source to submerge the bag to allow it to fill. It is hard to get water from a mildly shallow stream (from a spring or snowmelt, but you can always soak-and-ring). I carry a 5 oz water bag (2.5 gallons) and use that to collect my water. It takes 3 seconds to get 2 gallons and I just bring it back to camp and deal with it on solid ground. I'll hang it from a branch where I can control my pour and fill the bags up without getting them too wet (with unclean water). I always wipe my bag down after attaching the filter to keep things as clean as possible. But face it, no system is completely void of possible contamination. Bags: The bags are pretty durable, at least for a short while. After using them a few times I noticed creases forming and I saw spots of wear. They have never leaked, and I've probably used the big bag at least 30 times. I would like a backup bag, and I just saw they are selling two 64 oz. bags for $9 on here. Any 20 oz., L, or 2L bottle will screw on too. You can actually dip your bottle in a water source and be drinking straight from the filter in seconds. The flow isn't too strong though. Flow: It seemed that after I used the filter a few times, it worked a bit better. Squeezing a little bit (not too much) at the beginning and then slowly rolling the bag up seems to work great. This does cause a bit of wear to the bag, but you'll never keep these bags mint. I like to hang my bag over my main water container and let gravity pump my water. It will drain quick enough on its own and then I fill it up again with my 2 gallon source, let it hang, and I have a gallon in less than ten minutes while I relax my pumping muscles that I didn't have to use. When squeezing the bag to increase the flow, you can get clean water two times faster than pumping with a Katadyn Hiker Pro (I have the most experience with this pump). Filter: This filter is far superior to the others in its class. The Katadyn models use 0.3 micron filters, and MSR has a 0.2 micron. This filter is a 0.1 micron filter which will filter out some viruses (I think). When you decide you want to replace the filter, just buy an entirely new system (although it does come with a small syringe pump to backwash the filter at home). It costs the same as a replacement filter for the pump models. Also, there are no moving parts. You can't really break it unless you crack it. Pumps can leak. My Katadyn Vario leaked everywhere, I never felt safe with it. This product is very safe as long as you keep things clean. Bottom line: If you can deal with the quirks, this is an awesome, versatile, vey compact, super-lightweight, affordable, reliable, safe, easy, fast tool to use. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because of the bags and the fact that I can pump water from a 4 inch deep trickle, but it will take me a while to collect much water with this bag system. I always bring 5 gallons worth of tablets and can boil water if I need too, so I'm not too concerned about the limits of this filter. The benefits far outweigh the losses. Always have a backup plan or some ingenuity when using this filter. Don't bring only 1 container that will attach to the filter, because, unless you're crafty, you won't be able to get clean water if your only bag/bottle breaks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replace bag with 1.25 liter soda bottles I took this filter on 1800 miles of the AT. The bags failed in the first week. I replaced them with 1.25 liter plastic soda bottles. They lasted for the rest of the trip and are still going strong. The bottles are light, much easier to fill than the bags and durable. I've treated water, filtered water, boiled water and steripened water. This filter is by far the best way to go for me. During the day I drink directly from the filter; no waiting. I squeeze water out for cooking. I can squeeze as hard as I can without worrying about the bottle failing. I also squeeze out water for washing. In my opinion, Sawyer should drop the bags and supply the bottles or recommend their use. They're needlessly getting a bad name because the bags are so unreliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Light Weight Filter This is the lightest weight quality filter I've found. I use it together with a SteriPen. It's not that I don't trust the filter but I live in Hawaii and the water has some nasty stuff in it. I don't feel it's the worth the risk after having two nasty infections from open cuts on my feet while in a stream. I haven't had a single problem with this filter. Other reviewers that state the bags break I imagine they're being too rough with it. I've used this over a couple trips totaling 10 days so far. I filter at least 4-5 quarts a day. I don't roll up or squish the bag excessively. I simply fill it up, prop my foot on a rock and place the bag above my knee. I then use my fore arm to place even pressure on the bag while filling the bottle on the ground. I sometimes use my free hand to coax enough out of the bag to get a full bottle. It fills up water bottles faster than any pump style filter I've had and I've tried quite a few! This is a fantastic light weight filter!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible squeeze bags 1. Small opening and collapsible makes this bag virtually impossible to fill in anything other than cascading water (I had to use a secondary container to fill the squeeze bag). 2. After maybe a maximum of 24 uses the seam burst around the opening. Yes I did apply pressure squeezing the bag but in my mind not excessive or undue force. Called Sawyer direct and they do not honor any warranty on the "100s" of uses squeeze bags. Buyer beware of this product. 3. Minor note: corners on bags are sharp and can cut/poke nylon very easily. I took scissors and rounded corners to alleviate this problem.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from good idea but has flaws so the idea is good but the quality needs to be better. i used it on the kalalau trail in hawaii for 3 days and everything worked great and to expectations but my second outing with it was for 5 days doing stevens to snoqualmie on the pct and had some issues. the filter comes with 64oz, 32oz and 16oz bags and since sawyer says the bags last for 100's of uses i brought just those 3 for backups. well my first night in the 64oz bag failed on the seam next to the cap which was maybe its 10th use or so then the next morning the 32oz bag failed on its total of second use as well on the seam so all i had for the next 4 days was a 16oz bag to fill our 2 100oz water bladders, only slightly annoying. not only that but every time you unscrew the filter off of the bag the gasket comes out and stays in the bag and its a pain to get the gasket back in the filter. so the rest of the trip i babied the bag so it wouldnt tear and actually ended up boiling water at night so i wouldnt have to filter as much. i also ended up learning that there is a sweet spot as to how much you want to tighten the filter onto the bag, too tight and the gasket comes out, too loose and and water leaks but right in the middle the gasket will stay where its supposed too. i also ran into some thru hikers who had the same filter and they said specifically that "smart water" bottles work really well with the it. overall i like the weight and the size but im not sure if i will keep it or return it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I don't understand why this system isn't more highly rated! Water filter selection is way too difficult. We agonized over what to get since every system has significant drawbacks and potential for failure. We settled on the Squeeze due to its low price, ultra low weight, ease of use and recommendation from Backpacker magazine. I am thrilled with our choice! I started using this about two weeks before our trip to make sure I would identify any possible problems prior to heading out. I now take it to work with me every day to filter tap water rather than buying bottled water. Nice. :) Its inagural trip was to Little Yosemite Valley last weekend where temperatures dipped into the low 20s. After filtering bitterly cold snowmelt from various creeks, the filter spent the night in my pack in the vestibule of our tent and did not freeze. It worked perfectly well first thing in the morning when it was still well below freezing outside. We filtered our water into narrow mouthed bottles so we weren't concerned about contaminated water dripping into clean water. It would be easy enough to just wipe down the pouch with a bandana or shirt if you were filtering into something with a wider mouth. I agree that filling the pouches from shallow (less than 6 inches) water would be difficult if not impossible. If that's where most of your water will be coming from this probably isn't the right choice for you. I heartily recommend this system and look forward to many more well hydrated backcountry trips!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from simply the best - great customer service I received mine with a small puncture at the base of the largest bag in the box. I sent it back to Sawyer, and they sent me back TWO new bags along with four 1oz sample-size bottles of sun screen and bug repellant. They said it was there way of apologizing for the bad product in the box. Man that is great customer service. Speaking of customer service, I might chime in on the conversation about mis-use of the product. The bags are very well made, though I'd imagine if someone sat on the bag, jumped on the bag, or put their knee in the bag to create more pressure (e.g. to filter water faster) that the bag would fail. I'm not saying there has not been some failed product out there, but just be aware that there is a way to use this product and there is a way to not use this product. As one other reviewer pointed out, rolling the bag seems to work better than squeezing the bag and I'd guess it eliminates some of the bag-breaking issues. YMMV As for the product, man this thing rocks. This is SOOO much easier, faster and lighter weight compared to the MSR Miniworks (I sold my miniworks once I tried this Sawyer). Also note, you won't be buying $40 replacement filters for the Sawyer product, whereas that's exactly how much a replacement ceramic filter costs for the Miniworks. Last but not least, this solution weighs less than 18% of the MSR Miniworks solution (and that's not including the heavy weight of a Nalgene bottle screwed into the base of the MSR Miniworks). No kidding. So if you want to cut pack weight but keep a working solution in your pack, this is a GREAT way to do it (unless you like the taste of water purifier pills... yummie... right?). Good luck with your search and have fun!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome best describes This is a great product. Very light and easy to stow. Bags feel cheap but were very durable in the field. It is true bags are hard to fill when submerged but this is easily remedied by just dipping your titanium cup in the water and pouring it in the bag. I love this product because it is light, you dont have to sit stream side with a pump and you can carry extra water if you need to and filter later. I have used this on many long backpack trips and it is the best product out there. Great job Sawyer.
