The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about REI Merino Light Hiker Crew Socks - Men's:
I picked these up to compare them side by side with the Smart Wool light hiking merino socks because let's face it, there's a lot of choices out there in the arena of merino socks and if I can save 50% by buying REI to get equal performance, I'd like to know I can do that! Well to cut to the chase, they're great socks and I won't be forking over the obscene money for Smart Wool any longer. One caveat: if they fall apart and the Smart Wools don't, then I may change my mind but even then, at 50% the cost of the Smart Wool, even if I'm buying two pairs of REI brand, to one pair of Smart Wool, I'm still breaking even.
So. Performance? The thing that actually makes them better than the aforementioned Smart Wool variety is this: they don't sag out after a day of use. However they do it, these socks stay nice and taut on my feet all day long, and at the end of the day when I'm bedding down in my sleeping bag after hiking, and as the temps plummet, my toes are nice and warm, wrapped snuggly in these fine socks. How good is the elastic in the cuff? Good enough that when I tucked my knicker-length merino under layer tights into them on a cold night I woke up to find them still tucked in securely. Sadly, while the Smart Wool may be 10% warmer, the fact that they get baggy is annoying enough that I'm left wondering why I paid so much when I could have another pair of these REI socks.
Weight-wise, as in the thickness, I've used these socks in 35-70 degree temps (in the same day) and haven't missed a beat or once thought about my footwear choice (trail runners for hiking). They do let a tad bit of breeze through if the breeze gets through the shoes (which is more a trade-off with the shoe choice than the socks) but still, they're quite pleasant.
Lastly, the dry time on these is quite fast. I dunked a foot in a stream just yesterday, a cold spring fed stream at that, and didn't end up with cold toes because they simply dried out within an hour and never lost their insulating properties.
So yeah, in short, save the money you'd spend on Smart Wool light hikers and just get these. The elastic in the foot portion of the sock is just plain better, and so too the elastic in the cuff which will keep them riding high as they should. DO IT!
