LIghtweight and streamlined, the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack is ideal for fast-moving globetrotters. Despite its minimalist weight, it offers plenty of organization and lots of useful features.
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

I used this bag as my only luggage on a nine day trip to Peru. The trip included ten flight legs, two train rides, and a couple of hikes. While in the airports I stowed the shoulder straps and used the built in carrying handles, bag easily fits into the overhead compartments. Includes a padded storage compartment for electronics and interior stayed dry in a slight drizzle. Well made, bag still looks new.

Great travel bag for light travelersThis bag replaced a 14-year-old Eagle Creek convertible pack. I wanted something with better organization, better structure, and better shoulder and waist straps. It still needed to be carry-on size and have comparable longevity.
On the plus side, the Osprey is very comfortable when converted to a backpack. The internal frame gives the pack good structure and is easy to wear. It has sufficient room for a week's worth of clothing plus my laptop, charger, camera, and extra lens. Inner and outer compression straps help keep things in place. That being said, I'm a light packers so your mileage may vary. When not in use, the shoulder and waist straps hide behind a zippered cover making it quick to take out and put away. Handles on the side and top as well as a shoulder strap make it easy to manage when moving the luggage in and out of overhead compartments, trunks, etc. There is a small pocked on the top with a key ring and sufficient space to hold your cell phone, passport, and wallet. I prefer bags that come in colors other than black to make it easy for me to pick out my bag at the airport.
There are two minor downsides. First, due to its shape, the pack won't stand upright and has trouble sitting on its side. Usually it will flop over flat when placed on the ground. Second, the laptop sleeve is well padded but located on the outside of the pack. I understand this is to make it more convenient to access your laptop when moving through security, but it throws off the balance of the pack. This is not unique to this Osprey pack, similar packs from North Face, REI, and Eagle Creek all had a similar location. When wearing the pack for a longer time, I had to repack the laptop in the main compartment to distribute the weight better. FYI, my laptop is 14" and weighs a little less than 5 lbs. If you plan on using the shoulder strap, you may wish to purchase a padded one - the included strap is not padded.
The fabric and zippers seem sturdy and rugged. I can't comment on its water resistance since I did not spend time out in the rain. It does not come with a rain cover like the comparable REI pack.
Overall, I'm happy with the purchase thus far.

Carry On - Always FitsMust get the NEW MODEL - with a shoulder strap. Which is great for carrying around the airport once you are there or for into your hotel.
You should never have to gate check again. I can always find a place to put it. The I have fit on the smaller bins of plans, sideways, and even on top/below a brief case.
Only downside is also nice feature to it. It opens like a suitcase. No stuffing, but sometimes (with out other packing tools like cubes) without having higher harder sidewalls it is hard to fully pack loose items.
I bought the bag after I busted up my default wheeled carry-on and have not looked back. It is faster and easier to manage pack in an airport, and I love I can hide away the straps for easy stowing. I have already used it on 4+ trips. Usually use for 3-4 day trips for business. Not for the heavy packers - if you already have trouble with a normal carry-on do not buy this.
Note: Both Osprey/REI have not done a good job on there sites/pictures/descriptions to advertise the fact there is a new model. At the time of purchase they are marked as the same model in the REI stock.

Amazing, versatile backpack!I used this backpack on my first trip to Europe! I was gone for 3.5 months and the fairpoint 40 helped me along the way perfectly! From Ireland to Morocco to Sweden and from buses to trains to crammed taxis it never failed me :) IT FIT EVEN RYANAIR'S STRICT BAGGAGE POLICIES!!!! I never paid extra for luggage because it was my only bag! and I brought it onboard every train and bus and plane and simple stored it overhead or under the seat in front of me- never out of sight!!! (very important)
In my opinion, the best part about this backpack is the fact that it lays flat on the ground or your bed and opens up wide just like a normal suitcase! You can easily fold and stack your clothes in a way that will prevent wrinkles (great for Europe because you'll generally be wearing decent clothes) and you don't need to dig around to find your shorts on the bottom! (as is the case with top loading, traditional backpacks).
One of the best features of this bag is that not only does it have a comfortable, adjustable waist/shoulder/chest strap system but you can also zip all those straps away when you don't need them! Example- you walk around a new city for a few hours looking for your hostel and your comfortable and supported the whole time. Then you finally find a nice place and set your bag down in a crowded bunk room. Instead of having straps all over the place, you simply zip them all away and the rest of your stay is comfortable so nobody is tripping and your buckles aren't getting caught in your locker! So neat and orderly. NEXT when you only have a short walk to a taxi which brings you to the bus station or the airport or train station- you simply use the convenient shoulder strap to get in and out of the taxi easily and to walk down the aisles of that crammed train without whipping people in the face with your straps! Nothing to get caught on arm rests as you walk buy and a nice clean package to stow overhead or below your seat.
This bag has other great features like lockable zippers and compression straps for your clothes (to prevent them from sliding around) as well as outside to compress the entire package (you could easily put a tent or yoga matt or something under these straps- i put my skateboard there :) )
IN MY OPINION this is the only bag you should bring if you plan on backpacking Europe!!
I wouldn't recommend this for mountains hikes or extended camping, it best suited for urban environments and Osprey makes many other true outdoorsman backpacks.
I was able to fit pants, shorts, DRESS SHIRTS (THEY DIDN'T WRINKLE!), socks, underwear, belts, shoes, toiletrey bags and more!

This bag holds a lot and is lightweight!Got this bag to take with me on my travel adventures. Did a lot of research, tried out numerous bags, and decided the Osprey Farpoint 40 was the closest match to what I needed: a lightweight, roomy backpack style bag that would hold everything I could possibly stuff in it, yet still look sleek and most importantly, be small enough to use as a carry-on. Took it on its maiden voyage to Fairbanks, Alaska recently, and it far exceeded my expectations! I even got numerous compliments on my ability to travel light, something this girl has never been told! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish it had a few more interior pockets, and pockets on the waiststrap. And there wasn't an option to give it 4.5, which it totally deserves. Can't wait to take it out on its next adventure!

Isn't just right for what I wanted it foI got this pack to carry to work every day. It is too tall and narrow. The zippers don't open enough to give good access to the bottom part of the backpack. It might be fine for travel, but not good for every day use. It's a good pack, very well made, but think twice if you want to use this every day.
