Katadyn Hiker Water Filter
The lightweight, reliable and easy-to-use design makes the Katadyn Hiker water filter a great choice for backpacking and trekking.
- Filter physically removes particles, protozoa, and bacteria down to 0.3 microns in size, including giardia, salmonella, cryptosporidia and others
- Glass-fiber element is pleated for increased surface area to handle silt and muddy water
- Activated-carbon core adsorbs chemicals and pesticides to improve taste of water
- Aproximately 48 strokes per min. provide 1 liter of clean drinking water
- Pre-filter at hose inlet filters to 150 microns, removing larger contaminants before they reach the main filter to increase its life span
- Included adapter allows the filter output hose to attach to the quick-connect fitting built into some hydration reservoirs (reservoir not included)
- Katadyn Hiker water filter includes a carry sack and bottle adapter that fits most water bottles

I've had this filter for 3 years and love it. I work professionally in the fielded (high mountain streams) and am an avid recreationalist. I use this on the job, camping, hiking, backpacking, and rafting.
The pump is relatively fast and quite durable (I've given it a beating or two). I chose this pump over others because it's light weight, fast, and does not require the maintenance of the carbon/ceramic water filters.

I used this filter for only half of one summer. The plastic connection to the output hose broke off on my first backpacking trip, making it unusable. I think I used it about 3-4 times before it broke. Glad some other members of my group had a different type of water filter to share.

I have the original hiker, (blue and gray) it's somewhere around 10 years old and never had a problem with it. The filters last forever(they are a little pricey though), the construction is solid, never had the input valve break like some other reviews and it filters quicker than any of my buddy's filters. It is a little large in the pack but it weighs less than most other filters. Ceramic sounds great because you can clean in the field but my buddy is taking his apart to clean every 3 liters he filters. Bottom line: [$] for ten years of great tasting water.

With the hoses, if they had snap fittings, hiking assembly and use would be quite a bit quicker and easier! Could still be plastic fittings as not to compromise the lite weight. Even so, great pump!

At first the filter was great. It can fill a 2 liter Camelbak in a few minutes and the filter never needed to be cleaned. I've been at places where friend's ceramic MSR filters constantly clogged after every 2 liters and the Katadyn never clogged.
However, the tab the inlet hose attaches to snapped off when removing the hose out in the wilderness after using the filter about 6 times in the time I have owned it.
This renders the filter COMPLETELY useless (not even when the inlet hole is submerged under water) and unless you have another way to treat water you are going to die if you try and rely on this filter.
Reading the other reviews I am not the only one who's had the problem.
I am taking it back and upgrading to the "Pro" because a friend has one and it has a different "quick release" system for attaching the hoses, and it does not appear as if those will have the same problem.

This is an awesome filter. I just used it last week on a trip on the Appalachian Trail. I filtered water for 11 guys all week long and the Hiker was a dream. I can't wait to get out and use it some more. This is seriously the best filter I have ever used for backpacking.
