The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

The pump did a excellent job. Would recommend this for backpacking.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
Everything I could have wanted. There were 6 of us, and after 8 minutes of pumping, we had enough water to last us 4 hours of backpacking. No giardia after the trip. And the cleanup and drying is super easy.
Plus, the price was awesome. I love this filter. Just make sure to use the lube when assembling it, and to flush it out before first use, of course.
Service and delivery comments:
Prompt, great condition.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
For the money not a bad filtration system. Bought to replace my old Pur system for a four day Devils river kayak trip. The pump worked well but beware. Treat this pump with kid gloves. The pump housing is thin and the inlet nipple can easily break off from the pump. Also do not screw the filter cartridge in too tight or it will leak past the o-ring. (I machined a plastic cap to protect mine) Again for the price not a bad pump but take care when storing in your pack, drybag etc...

Always ended up with perfectly clean water. I have used it mainly in streams/running water versus stagnate/standing water.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
Used this for backpacking trips for 4 years.
Other uses who have reviewed this as being "hard to pump" or slow clearly do not have experience with physical media water filters.
PROS:
-The Katadyn (previously PUR) water pump is one of the fastest, easiest to pump physical pumps I have come across. Compared to my friends MSR model, this one filled our group's Nalgenes 4x faster with what seemed to be the same, if not less, effort.
-Good multi-tier filtration system really gets out particulate matter. (Tablets, UV pens, etc don't do this at all even if they kill the bacteria you still got dirt or w/e in your water).
CONS:
-Not field repairable. (Get the "Pro Hiker" edition instead and you are in 5-star land)
-The inlet valve is just hard plastic. In my case, after 4 years of use, I was removing the tubing and the entire inlet valve snapped off. No way to repair this in the field, so now I have a giant paperweight. Great for short trips, but I would not take on trips extending more than several days.
-VERY hard to remove the filter. The instructions make it look easy....I could personally never figure out how to disassemble the handle to use it as a "tool" to remove the media. Nonetheless, I simply used a wrench which works fine, but its still an incredible ordeal to remove the filter.
Additionally, when you put the filter back, unless it lines up just right, the pump will leak and you will have to redo the whole thing. It takes quite a bit of force to insert/remove the filter cartridge, even with a wrench (I found it impossible to do by hand).
BOTTOM LINE:
Get the "PRO HIKER" edition instead. It is field repairable, light weight, fast, and has a simple design.
I do not like UV Pens since they are tricky to use and rely on batteries. Tablets make water taste funny and boiling just takes way too long. This is a fast, simple pump with great tasting water since it filters out not just the bacteria, but also any other particulate matter too.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
After having tried many different filter systems, I will never buy another filter other than the Katadyn Hiker. Tired of slow output, quirky, cumbersome, heavy filter methods? I was too and this filter has proven to be better than I could have imagined. In a matter of minutes, I can fill all of my water containters and not be completely out of breath and drenched with sweat in the process. Convenient carrying case, easy to operate, simple to clean, long lasting filter... need I say more? Spend a few extra dollars, trash your garbage filter, and get the Hiker.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
I have used this filter quite a bit (or at least the model that was made by PURE) back when I was working as a trail guide for a college here in Colorado and over all, it worked well and we by no means, were gentle with it. The only time we had an issue with it was on a trip down in Texas where the water had a lot of sand suspended in it and it tore the element up pretty bad. Looks like they may have changed the design of this part though so I'm not sure if this would still be a problem but it could probably be overcome by throwing a (clean) sock over the intake to help keep the bits of debris out of the pump. My best friend just purchased one of these newer models and I am looking forward to seeing how it performs (and how well it holds up from what I've been reading in the recent reviews) compared to the older models. Time will tell I guess…

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
This pump works reasonably well while it lasts. However, this last summer I have seen 4 of them fail on 3 separate trips in the exact same way - the plastic casing of the pump splits apart at the seam and the pump can no longer maintain adequate pressure.
In one backcountry trip we brought 2 of these to be safe and they BOTH failed.
So in summary this is a very lightweight pump that works reasonably well. Just don't take it anywhere where your life depends on it.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
I only consider this bulky compared to just boiling water and letting it cool...
I first got this when it was sold by PUR and it's lasted me for years. The hoses have yellowed and the filters are easy to replace. I find that it doesn't effect the taste of the water and it fills my bladders easily.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker Water Filter:
On 2 consecutive trips I lead along the Continental divide this summer I packed this filter. It's function and weight are great. HOWEVER on both trips the intake nipple (a non-replacable part) broke off. Once this happens you have to submerge the body filter into the water source for it to work. This is a real pain in the butt and greatly reduces the reach the pump has for accessing water. This intake nipple is made out of plastic and is completely resistant to field repairs. The instructions suggest carrying the filter with the intake hose wrapped around the body. This might contribute to the easy breaking, but I treated the thing with kid gloves the second trip, only to have the same results. Fortunately we had a secondary water filter with us on both trips.
I'd say Buyer Beware!!
