Black Diamond Icon Headlamp is rated 4.2286 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome headlight I used this headlight for my trips and most recent trip to yosemite national park. It's extremely bright. We helped an older guy with knee problems and his kid down from Half Dome because they had no lights and we lit the entire trail with day light the entire 9 miles and didn't experience any shortages of power. For the brightness you are getting with the longevity and durability of this light is incredible. I have had several different lights and this is by far the best one I've ever recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The sun on your forehead As much light as you want. with 4 AA batteries, you have a lot of power and coupled with the infinitely adjustable dimmer, you can tune this thing down to last forever or you can guide aircraft from miles away. I traded my Petzel Tika 2 + for this thing. Get one if you can -

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic unit I bought this a few months ago during a sale to replace an older BD headlamp. I have used it for two summits this year and a handful of over nighters, day hikes. I have yet to replace or recharge the batteries as it uses very little power. The quality of light with the low and high beam is amazing. With the low beam I could see a good 20 yards while executing a midnight summit. The high beam is very bright and gives a great field of vision. The red light and strobe features are very handy. But my favorite feature is the lock out feature. I love that I can lock and unlock my head unit and not worrying about it accidently getting switched on in my pack, etc. I love the push button design as it is easy to activate with heavy weight, to lightweight gloves in the dark and cold. The unit is a bit heavier than some, but this makes up for the durability and life while on my helmet while climbing. I whacked it a few times and then some, and thought for sure it was done. But not even a hiccup. I would recommend this headlamp to all my friends along with a few lithium ion batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just as described. Very satisfied. Bike tourist/ bike camper. I bought this as an upgrade, my previous Petzl predates the current technology and I wanted a headlamp that I could use for camping and also for lighting the path while riding the bike. I was initially concerned at the maybe complex switches but found them very practical and intuitive in the field - seems like they're easier to use than to describe in writing. Excellent light. I like being able to dim the light, both to maximize battery life but also to avoid blinding others in the camp. I'm very happy with the purchase; I would buy it all over again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brilliant, long battery life. Bicycling. Overall, a well designed product. My biggest complaint is one particularly annoying aspect of an otherwise well thought out user interface. Rather than remember the mode from last use, the headlamp alternates between spot and floodlight each time you turn it on. On paper, this may not sound very bad, but in the field this is really annoying because most of the time, you'll probably want to use it in the same mode as you did the previous time. So half the time, you get a light which is either too dim or too bright (because the spotlight is really bright, but the floodlight isn't). I find this design bug annoying enough to dock the product a whole star. (Apparently previous years' versions of this light didn't have this design flaw.) I bought this headlamp to attach to my bicycling helmet for fall/winter/spring cycling. The weight of the four AA cells was awkward at first. Other than that, it's quite nice to have a 200 lumen headlamp mounted on the helmet; allows me to see road hazards at night, and to be seen by motorists. The light assembly is a little bulkier than i need for bicycling, and i'd happily trade-in the red-light and flood light LEDs for a more compact unit, but this is a minor quibble. All in all, it's a good light. I feel much safer bicycling at night with this headlamp on my helmet, the batteries last a long time, the light is very bright, and i'm able to operate it fairly well even with winter gloves on. I use the strobe mode when bicycling in the daytime. I chose this headlamp over another model (from a different manufacturer) designed specifically for bicycle helmet mounting. While that light was lighter weight, had a more compact design, and also had amber sidelights and a red taillight on the battery pack, i went with the Icon primarily because it was twice as bright, had a much longer battery life, was half as expensive, and uses replaceable NiMH AA cells (not that i need to carry a spare battery with the Icon). I would have liked a red flashing light on the battery pack, but this headlamp is designed more for spelunking, i think, so can't fault it for my "off label" use. It would be nice to see a bicycling version of the Icon, however. I would use this light for extended power outages, or for search and rescue after an earthquake. For backpacking and various around the house purposes, i would likely opt for its little brother (Black Diamond Spot), which i also own and like. It, however, suffers from the same UI design flaw as the Icon. I like that this light has a dimmer, but in practice i rarely have an occasion to use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect for extreme use I love my icon and don't even use my tika2+ anymore. I wanted a light that last has a long battery life. The icon exceeds that expectation. This lamp uses 4 AA batteries which gives an enormous burn time. I find the "cons" of heavy funny maybe people thought they could use 2 batteries or maybe it's just magic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright, sturdy, bulky, versatile I purchased this from REI about a year back and have had a chance to use it a few times since then. Pros: It boasts a sturdy construction and its 4 batteries mean it will run for a good time (this somewhat outweighs the bulk of carrying extra batteries if you're hiking for long). I've gone several weeks with moderate in-house use without changing mine. The beam is bright. I am a flashlight junkie so I usually prize CREE leds and although this is not my brightest flashlight, it is probably the brightest headlamp I've seen (and the brightest running on AAs as opposed to 18650 rechargeables). There is a lot of versatility in having the spot beam, wide beam, and red light modes (red is especially useful if you enjoy stargazing/astronomy, or need to read instruments like in piloting), and a great plus is that they are dimmable throughout the full range. You also get a strobe mode. Cons: The battery compartment has a water-tight seal/gasket, and a quarter-turn knob to seal the lid tight, but beware: the design is somewhat poor in that if you don't pay attention, it is easy to miss the locking tab from engaging the locking slot, so that might make the compartment not water tight, and could put stress on the housing. You just have to press down hard enough when securing with the battery compartment lid with the quarter-turn knob. I don't like that you cannot detach the power cord and hook up an extension (it would be nice if you could carry the batteries on your hip, allowing use of the lamp on, say, a bike helmet... I know the Petzl NAO does) but for camping/hiking (no helmet) it works great. Might not be the best choice for climbers. Although I believe if you go to BD's website, this year's model might have changed that (I think off of their website, it does include a detachable/extended power pack). I have also found (as another reviewer noted) that the beam only goes down a certain amount, but I have not found this to bother me at all (I just tilt my head down). Conclusion: In my opinion, the Petzl NAO and this Black Diamond Icon are probably the best headlamps on the market now. Don't know why it is rated so low in REI. Depending on intended use, you might not consider it a 5, but I think this headlamp is definitely worth at least a 4 star rating.
