Mountain Safety Research's Packtowl line is impressive. Whether you're an ultralight adventurer or a heavy trekker looking to trim weight, pay attention to this simple detail-- yep, a towel.
For years, I've carried what I thought were lightweight handtowels. When I saw the ridiculous claim of this nano (0.9 ounces) for the 18"x23" Medium, I decided to give it a try. First, I had to take it out of its microscopic pouch to see if it really measured as stated. Next, I weighed it on a scale next to my other "light" towel. My threadbare cotton towel, the same dimensions by the way, weighed in at 5 ounces dry. By replacing the 2 towels I typically bring (one for dishes, one for body) I save a half pound! That's a half pound savings I've overlooked for almost 30 years of backpacking.
Next, I tested absorbency and quick drying. I started by having the family dry hands before dinner. By the end of dinner, the towel was dry. I decided to give it a real test (albeit beyond its claims). I dried my entire body and hair off (and I'm pretty hairy) with this rag. I rung it out 3 times to complete the job. Everytime you ring it out you release 90% of the water. Despite being damp, it still absorbs the water from your skin. Its weird--kind of magic. If you tried this in cold temps, however, Packtowl would be rather chilly. I hung it over a rail for the night and put it away completely dry in the morning, 6 hours later. That means that I will no longer pack a damp towel around with me which can more than double the weight of the dry towel. In essence, I save about a pound and sacrifice no capability or comfort; the towel is soft, not coarse and scratchy.
Next time you have a few spare dollars, invest in this simple wizardry.

This little towel has hundreds of trail miles and still looks and works like new. It's very absorbant and dries in a flash. It washes and dries easily and it doesn't pill or shred. It's never gotten a bad odor, even in the humid Southeast where nothing really dries completely. I like the clip and loop system that allows it to attatch to your pack so it can dry while you're walking. I also like that you can seperate it from its little mesh sack, if you're really shaving grams. It's also useful as a bandanna and possibly to pre-filter sediment and debris from a silty water source. I just wish it came in a neutral color like brown, grey or green.

I saw this at my local REI. I can't stand most of my pack being weighed down by a towel so I decided to do some research and invest in a microabsorbent towel. An REI sales rep suggested to get this one due the the softness and its quick drying time. It was about ten bucks and probably the best 10 bucks I have ever spent on camping gear. It packs down to barely nothing. As thick as an inch and maybe the height of a credit card. It is super absorbent as well. I had it under a faucet and it dried in the sun after squeezing the towel in about 2 minutes. The only cons is that I wish they had a size large. Honestly it wouldn't of have compromised the name of this great product. It is made by Cascade designs so you know its gonna be nice. Do yourself or buy others this very convenient gift. Save yourself a lot of space and weight and invest in this towel. You won't regret.
Great for minimalist. I have used this as a body towel even. IF you can make it work, the medium size will not do you any harm. It is a perfect product.

My primary use is at the racetrack or at motorsysle events. After a long ride the soft, and absorbant town is a blessing. Dries quick or downse with cool water to cool off. Also as a Certifed NRA trainer standing in the sun for up to 8 hours you need more than a roll of tissue but a towel is too heavy or cumbersome. All my friends keep asking what's that, and where did you get it. Maybe I need to be a distributer at these events? Hmmmmm

I just received this towel in the mail and I already love it. It's super light, which is great for ounce counters, but it is still absorbent and seems very durable. Even after I completely soaked it in water and rung it out it still weighed less than 50 grams. I can't wait to take this out on the trail with me.
