Comments about Mountain Hardwear ThruWay 50 Pack:

I have went ultralight since I can't get any full suspension packs to fit. I love this pack it is great. Good up to 25lbs over and get ready for sore shoulders.
By adjustable hold bunches and can be modified - I pulled out the padding and I just us my Thermo Rest Z lite pad as the back padding.
Also get rid of your hydro pack and got with bottles/ platypus soft sides.
Pull all padding for day hikes.
Great pack with no "cons" here. I am 5'8 & 120 (M) and medium fits great.
        Good work MH

Comments about Mountain Hardwear ThruWay 50 Pack:

I'm planning to hike a section of the PCT this year, so I got this pack to save a couple of pounds, and to carry a lighter load. After my first overnighter, I really like it! With 23lbs (my share, vs. my tiny partner's 16lbs), it was very comfortable. Later I carried even more gear, and at around 30lbs my shoulders were not happy. But if you're carrying 30lbs, you're not doing what this pack is meant for - lightweight backpacking or thru-hiking.

I have two gripes. First, the only hydration bladder feature is the loop on the sternum strap. There is no port in the pack and it's a roll-top, so cutting a port would be required to make it work. There's also no sleeve or hook inside for a bladder. Not a problem if you use bottles.

Second, I got a medium and the removable foam pad was about 2" too long for the pack (1" when folded). It won't fit in the pack frame sleeve without buckling & curving & folding back on itself. So, I'm trimming it tonight. I did find the pad useful for sitting on in camp - a freebee, if you will.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear ThruWay 50 Pack:

I ordered this pack last week, sight unseen, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this pack. The bottom of the pack is made of very strong, reinforced fabric, the pack does weigh hardly anything, and for the simplicity, the pack is very versatile.

I used the pack this weekend for a climbing daytrip. The only drawback for rock use is that without a frame, it is hard to pack such things as stiff bulky ropes. That said, I was pleased with the comfort and fit for the approach to the climb. The frame-less profile makes this pack PERFECT for use with a helmet. I'm a 5'5" small frame female and the pack fit me perfectly.

I hope to use this on the PCT next summer, until then it will be used frequently! Thank you MH for making a quality product.

          Clarification on Pockets

Comments about Mountain Hardwear ThruWay 50 Pack:

This pack arrived in the mail just yesterday so I haven't tried it on the trail yet, but I wanted to post an initial review in order to clarify the pocket situation for other shoppers.

I had researched the pack online so didn't see it in person until it arrived in the mail. Based on my research, I was really looking forward to the two mesh pockets per side which REI describes as:

"Stretchy mesh side panels feature pockets for water bottles and tent poles"

Except that they're not really pockets. Though the bottom panel is closed at the bottom, the mesh panels are really just the sides of the large-capacity outer pocket. When the pack is full, these panels hold items in by compressing them against the pack body, but when the pack isn't very full you lose the ability to use them as real pockets since anything you put in them will simply fall into the vast outer pocket.

I'm undecided whether to keep the pack. It's a good capacity for its meager weight (size medium is 29oz, 50L) and appears well made, but I was hoping for a pack with a lot of exterior pockets for stashing small, frequently-accessed items.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear ThruWay 50 Pack:

I recently decided to enter the world of ultralight backpacking, and after researching many packs, I decided on the ThruWay 50.
This pack is great. I ordered a large, and it weighs in at 1lb 14oz.
It is an extremely well built pack, both in materials and design. It is rugged and simplistic, both qualities that I wanted in a pack.
The main compartment is very large, as is the external pocket. The compression systemon this pack works very well. The back panel is well padded and ventilated.
The only thing that I changed on this pack was the hipbelt. The belt that comes on this pack is minimal, having almost no padding. I ordered a replacement Mountain Hardwear Alpine belt, which adds a lot more padding, and only adds 4 oz to the overall weight of the pack.
All in all, a great pack from a great company.
