Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Stretch Hiking Shoes - Men's:
I got the version 3 last summer as a gift from my wife (yes at rei!). I love the comfort and ease of these shoes. The only issue I had was with the sole detaching from the toe. It peels back and did it on both shoes. I have used gorilla glue to repair it every 2-3 months. This started about 60 days into owning them, with little to no wear at the time. I would be buying the new version immediately if I knew this was corrected. I spent 90 days corresponding with Merrell last year but grew tired of waiting on responses. Please post if you find the sole to be sturdy on the front of the toe!

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Stretch Hiking Shoes - Men's:
I have worn these shoes for a few weeks and am impressed with the large toe pocket, fit, traction, decent ensoles and very comfortable feel for a light hiking shoe. I have worn these shoes (size 11.5) on my daily 3 mile hikes (200lb & 6'2" man) over paved roads, natural dirt and rocky surfaces (up and down hills) and my feet are very happy. I have read reviews about the Chameleon 3 shoes with the peeling of the outside rubber toe on the shoe.....so far after 56 miles not a problem for the Chameleon 4 (I will amend my review/rating if this does become an issue). I really appreciate the toe space and having the built in inner sock which keeps out the debre (sticky grass seed & small twigs). I did spray water repellant on my shoes which helps keep my feet dry during the short rains we experience during the Spring weather in the high dessert country of eastern Oregon. I like my feet to breathe so I did not want to purchase a gortex type shoe which causes my feet to sweat. I was so impressed with the performance so far (and because I am an optomist) I just ordered another pair of the Chameleon 4 stretch shoes on line today (from REI of course).

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Stretch Hiking Shoes - Men's:
I am on my second pair of the chamelions (3/4). I am a general contractor and these are my preferred work shoes - I can slip them on and off easily when going in a house from a jobsite and the hold up well in daily use (about one pair every 1- 11/2 years). I have been wearing Merrells for my work shoes for the last 5 or 6 years with a short stint with Sketchers (hopeless -wore out in 2 months). The Merrells have been super for my plantar fasciitis as well, in fact they were first recommended by a podiatrist and by a chiroprator.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Stretch Hiking Shoes - Men's:
I also, as another reviewer, bought the previous model Merrell Chameleon and the sole separated from the toe within 60 days. However, the separation did not did not impair the stiffness or the comfort of the shoe. I hike often in the coastal Santa Cruz mountains and feel comfortable using these shoes on all types of terrain.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Stretch Hiking Shoes - Men's:
First, I'll admit I'm a real fan of Merrell shoes. They just seem to fit better than other brands. I bought the Chameleon 4's for Summer hiking and backpacking. After a wearing them a couple of times as casual shoes to break them in, I wore them on a 10-mile fast-hike in George Washington NF. The trail ran from light mud to pine needles to oh-my-god rocky steep. Initially, I was concerned about the bungee laces letting my heels lift a little inside the shoe, but I forgot about it after 20 minutes, or so, and it was never a problem. One big advantage that I had not considered is the stretch top. It kept trail litter out of the Chameleons just like a pair of gaiters. At one point I mis-stepped on a rock and twisted my ankle. As it twisted I could feel the bungee laces and stretchy top stretching a little. I think this stretch saved me a sprained ankle. This shoe is a winner-get your own pair!
