Comments about DeLorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator for Android:
I've had the inReach for almost two months and it's worked flawlessly for my use. Check-in messages are received promptly and there have not been any missing trackpoints in my 3x-weekly hikes.
I also like the "notification" on the unit that the check-in messages have been received by the satellite.
This unit is like a breath of fresh air compared to my experience with the horrid SPOT 2.
NOTE: I am using the unit in 'standalone' mode and have no experience with pairing with an Android phone of the use of the DeLorme app. I will be getting an Android this summer when my 2-year contract on my existing cell phone is up.
One thing to be aware of is that there is a governmental "Universal Service Fund" fee added to the monthly bill in addition to the selected plan fee.
Service and delivery comments:
The device was pre-ordered online and it was delivered very promptly when it was released in mid-November 2011.
REI service is terrific, as usual.

Comments about DeLorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator for Android:
Haa! I just got off the phone with Delorme customer service after ordering the InReach. I wondered if it would be possible to use an android phone with no cellular service. They told me that the GPS on the phone needed to be "active", because when I would be viewing my current location, where I was, on the phone, I would be relying on THE PHONES GPS!!!
I wonder why this isn't mentioned anywhere in their advertising?

Comments about DeLorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator for Android:
The inReach is not made to display gps on your phone. The phone just gives you a keyboard to use for messaging. I cannot think of anything more reassuring than receiving a reply from emergency services that they got your SOS. The text messaging is good but the whole point is getting away from everything. My son lives for the mountains so this is a parent saying thanks. A good product, maybe a rental market will grow for this.

Comments about DeLorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator for Android:
I will have to come back and update this review after a few weeks of use (just purchased), but wanted to give a preliminary review on the device as I had a hard time finding a lot because of how new the item is.
I purchased this unit for piece of mind for my wife. I currently have the Spot II unit and it work OK but it is only 1 way communication and the wife really wanted to be able to reach me if needed (don't ask... but this gives me a kitchen pass to go out and play in the woods, small price to pay).
Like I said, only had the unit for 1 week so this will be real limited feedback, but I can compare this unit to SPOT II, and as for setup this unit is more intuitive and faster to setup. There web page loads faster and is easier to navigate. Any Spot unsure will probably agree with this statement, there web page is glitchy/buggy. Importing map points from the SPOT can randomly work and sometimes just not function at all.... but that's not the intended purpose of the unit.
The InReach is rather quick at sending messages, maybe 2 or 3 min went by before I received messages (testing the unit out). The real test will be in 2 weeks when I am in the Pacific north west, the SPOT really had a hard time locking on to satellites with the tree cover in the cascades, but lets be fare, its a line of site system so it is kind of out of scope for me to expect this type of performance, but it would be nice if it would work. So I am looking forward to seeing how well the InReach responds in this environment.
The unit is a little large, but I knew this going into it. Unit paired up with my android phone very well, took less then a minute. Also the map downloads are fantastic. You can download key areas (and they are very large, 1/2 state of pennsylvania)you want, and the maps navigate fast on my HTC Incredible.
I will update with actual field use some time.
I currently still have service on my Spot II unit until May, so plan on doing a little reception test on both the units.

Comments about DeLorme inReach 2-Way Satellite Communicator for Android:
Great at keeping track of tracking points. Allows people you send text messages the ability to link to your GPS location when the message was sent. Works well in stand alone mode or with Android phone. Take time to make sure you have a good bluetooth interface in your phone...my phone had a bad bluetooth device in it and I had to have the phone replaced under warrenty.
