I am a light traveler. I plan to use this lightweight carry-on for a 5 week trip through Europe. I used it for a 4 day weekend getaway and I even managed to over pack. You can wear it, pull it, or carry it and the wheels are quiet. I love the additional back pack which easily holds enough for a day trip: 2 water bottle sleeves, room for a sweater, wallet, and multiple compartments, even one for a large laptop (my 13x10inch laptop is just a little too big - I guess that's my excuse to purchase a smaller device!). I haven't used it enough to determine what it will withstand, but so far I am more pleased than I expected. Would highly recommend.

Plenty of room and all pockets easy to access. Backpack attaches easily enough and holds enough for a day trip if needed. I am far from easy on my gear so I do not like to buy cheap gear to get by with. I have a friend that has this exact pack and she loves it and has not had a single problem. REI makes great gear...better than any other store brand.

I bought this rolling convertible back-pack with detachable day back-pack for a trip to Thailand. It was an excellent choice. The main compartment was capacious and easy to pack/unpack. The detachable front backpack could hold all my electronics (small laptop, cell phone chargers, along with travel documents. Once I was at my destination, it was the perfect size for short excursions. The overall build quality is excellent and the ergonomics of the bag are outstanding. The bag is well-balanced unless you have the front pack filled with heavy items. WIth normal packing the bag never tips like many weeping bags do. The styling is modern yet rugged. VEry nice! Will use it for years to come!

I bought this about a year and a half ago and have used it extensively since then. The earlier model that I have does not include the attached daypack. It does have three zippered pockets in the front flap and a zippered pocket on the side for a water bottle. It has a zippered compartment on the back with backpack straps.
I have used it as a carry on for all my trips, including a three-week vacation in Hawaii, a week in London, and a week in Venice. Also, used it (and its big brother) to move to Germany.
It is easy to pack, easy to carry, and fits well on airplanes. I have rarely used the backpack straps and, although not nearly as comfortable as a backpack, they are handy when using it on stairs, cobblestones, etc.
This was a great purchase and is my go-to bag for all my travels. It is well balanced when fully loaded - doesn't tip over even with another bag draped over the handle. The zippers and material are very solid. I have another day pack that I use so I don't need the day pack that comes with this model. Absolutely no regrets about this purchase, now my husband wants one, too!

I just got this in the mail yesterday and it looks like a good bag. I spent a good amount of time looking at carry-on luggage, because I want the largest I could get. I have a nice backpack I use for all my work computer equipment, so this bag was appealing because of the smaller pack that detaches. I was planning to use this for personal stuff when traveling.
Well here is where the remorse kicks in. the "dimensions of 22 x 14 x 9 inches" (listed on the site and product tag) do not include the detachable pack! The specs just say dimensions, so I was under the impressions dimensions would describe the item in its entirety, since there was no qualifier that this was only describing the primary bag.
Long story short, I spent $50 extra because it had the detachable backpack and I will not receive the benefit of it because I have to use the backpack I already have. So I thought I would be able to carry-on 3 bags and 61 litters… sadly I cannot
I have yet to use to bag, but it does appear to be well built. Which is a plus of buying REI, but I could have purchased similar quality at lower price, if just comparing the primary bag.
One technical problem I do see is, the compression straps that hold the smaller bag to the primary, may drag on the ground if there is not much in either bag. By the looks, it could possibly get caught in one of the wheels.
Sorry for all the complaining.

This bag had most of the features I wanted in a travel bag and was a good price. The simplified design keeps it lightweight. The compact day pack is well organized with various pockets and compartments and can be easily attached to/detached from the main bag. The main bag has a comfortable shoulder harness (rather than a heavier, complex backpack harness) to carry hands free when necessary. The main bag is also well organized with various pockets and compartments.
The drawbacks for this bag are a few details that would have made the bag more complete, especially when you compare this bag to its slightly higher priced but more feature-filled big brother. The straps used to attach the bottom of the daypack (which is attached by a zipper on the larger version) dangle on the ground and are dragged under the wheels - a simple elastic loop around the straps (like on the sternum straps) would allow these straps to be gathered and held in place. Though these straps serve as a compression strap when the daypack is detached, they are un-necessary. Another missing detail is a way to secure the main bag's shoulder harness compartment cover to the bottom of the bag when the harness is in use.
So to make this bag a better value, either these details should be added or the price should be reduced to reflect its simplicity compared to the larger version.

Used this for a two-week trip from DC to LA and Maui. Main bag easily fit overhead on Alaska Air and American Air. It's an inch or so narrower than the traditional bags without losing space. It's also lighter making it easier to lift overhead. Soft sides have more flex than conventional square suitcases. Love the number of pockets inside and out. Side handle and top handle make it easy to lift out of car or up stairs when not using wheels. Clip-on backback much better than competitor's zipper-on backpack because no snags or wear/tear problems in future. I used the backpack for day trips in Maui. Small/sleek without bulk. My trip was in summer so I just packed shorts, shirts, capris, shoes...no long pant, coats, or sweaters. I did manage to fit my swim fins and snorkel gear with all the clothes and was impressed with how much I could pack. Best luggage I've ever had. I will use this for business too.

watched this on REI site for a year waiting for a review. Went ahead and bought it without reviews. I was interested in a wheeled backpack for use on trains and buses. Wheels are great in airports but up and down on transit systems I find myself wanting a backpack. The bag itself is nothing special and you can find similar wheeled bags for less money in lots of places. The backpack straps were minimalist and would work but are not what I had hoped for. The attached/detached day pack is not very substantial (why would it be/). Since I generally carry a day pack when I travel the added daypack is redundant and not good enough to make me leave my normal pack at home. All in all the luggage was not what I expected/needed. More expensive and less serviceable than I hoped. I returned it before my last trip and lugged my older bags around Australia for 2 weeks.
