- Lightweight nylon fabric dries quickly and resists pilling, and is easy to pack away in a backpack
- With a UPF 50+ rating, fabric provides excellent protection against harmful ultraviolet rays
- Fabric is treated with a Durable Water Repellent finish to repel moisture and stains
- Pleated cargo pockets with rip-and-stick flap closures offer ample space for trail and travel items; a zippered pocket on the left side secures essentials

Altogether, I like these shorts. The material is light and comfortable. However, there are two points that prevent me from giving a 5-star rating.
First, the main snap has metal backing up against my skin. If there's any tension in the waist line, the snap tends to lean. The metal backing has a surprizingly sharp edge that cuts into me. The upper part of the snap is abnormally thick. In total, the snap is over .41" thick (without the added belt buckle). Compare this to the metal snap in Levis which is only .34" thick. This would be very annoying under a backpack waist belt. Rather than return them, I had my wife sew a 1" square of soft leather behind the snap to keep the sharp edge at bay. For an REI logo'd pair of shorts, I'm saddened they would accept the super-thick snap design with sharp metal.
Second, I really love the idea of a smaller pocket on the right leg for a cell phone. Most phones swim in cargo pockets. My Samsung GS3 fits in the pocket, but is too tall to close the flap over it. My wife's iPhone (which is all REI seems to think exists) fits perfectly even with a TPU cover. With the flap tucked in behind the phone, I've had the phone fall out of the pocket while sitting down. I joke about REI and the iPhone, but when you look at their offerings for phone accessories, they seem to only have stuff for iPhone.
Bottom line: I'd reccomend them with the noted caveats.

I love these shorts, they are a great buy. Ill be ordering more pairs when I get back from my next trip. The materials are great, and I washed them and then left them out to dry and were dry within a few hours. No shrinkage.
Also the sizing is funny, SO listen carefully. If you are a 32-33-34 waist I would recommmend a "Large" These include a small belt that helps, but I dont need to use it, I just have it to keep them tight.
The shorts have a elastic/banded waist so they fit great on my 33-34 inch waist. If you are pretty skinny, IE 30-31-32 waist I would get a medium. The shorts are just past me knee were I like them, Not above the knee at all.

I bought these for my husband. I bought according to the sizing chart which seemed consistent with his "normal" size from other brands. However, when he received them they are clearly at least one whole size too small. Frustrating to have to add the expense and time of returning to exchange the size. I'm hoping once we get an accurate size he will be happy with the fit so that we can buy more!

This is the second pair of REI Sahara shorts I've owned, and the first ones served me well for over 5 years. The new shorts are similar in construction to the old ones, but have a different type of belt. Unfortunately, I don't like the new belt as much. The belt is loose in the belt loops and falls out often when unlocked. Also the belt lock is not as easy to use as in the old short. All that said, these shorts are still great...

used these on a month long trip - as per my earlier review , consider trying them on for size ( although another reviewer was fine with a large size I found the XL more comfortable & we are the same waist ) .
I used them walking the Swiss Alps & bumming around London & they worked really well in both locations & I was very happy with them.

These shorts are great. I finally had to replace the ones I bought over 10 years ago because they were a little short for current fashion. The old ones (two pairs) have been through alot and still look great. The new ones seem even better. I was so happy that REI keeps making these. Can't make any judgements as not worn them yet. Just writing to state that I am a 34" waist & I find the large just a little snug. They may be okay for those the same size but maybe slimmer in the leg. My advice wld be to try before you buy if possible.
