Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
I wear these over Manzella silk-weight Windstopper gloves for winter running. Together they're quite warm, and I can flip these to "fingerless" to handle zippers, watch buttons, etc., with my light gloves. Bought my pair in 2009, now buying a pair for my teen son. I buy one size larger for over-glove use.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
These mittens are warm enough for a chilly day, and it's nice being able to quickly get to your fingers for tasks that require dexterity. You'll need to, because these gloves are very slippery on their own. Also, the little hole for your thumbs to come out of tends to stay cracked open, letting in the wind and cold air.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
I use these mittens for casual hiking and walking the dog. I can put them on when I leave the house and I do not need to take them off to drive or unhook the dog leash.
I'm not in super cold weather 30-40's but these work well keeping the wind off, and the convertible aspect is much more convenient then pulling the whole glove off. I haven't gotten them wet yet.
They seem sturdy enough but I've only had them 2 weeks

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
A couple of weekends back, I treked about an 8 mile stretch that ended at the top of Blood Mountain (highest point of the GA AT). The temperature during the day ranged from the low 30's to mid 20's, and over night dropped down somewhere around 13. Fires are not permited around that stretch of the trail, so it was up to my clothing and equipment to keep warm. I found the gloves to be absolutely everything I needed to help keep my hands warm. I slept in a hammock on the mountain with only a sleeping bag and a bag liner. When I felt the urge to grab something or relieve myself, my main concern was how quickly I would lose use of my hands when they became exposed to the cold. I would've been in a spot if I kept having to warm up my hands from near frozen every time because my gloves made it imposible to complete small tasks. The wind was very powerful, and it even ripped out a stake for the tarp I was using as my rain/wind shield. I had to very quickly get out of my sleeping bag and make adjustments before my fingers froze to the bone, and the ability to rip off the top of the mittens and have use of my fingertips was crucial.
I purchased these gloves somewhat on a whim, because I felt they were very comfortable, looked good, and werre totally worth the price. I am a huge fan of cold weather camping, and have been stepping up my equipment to ultimately tackle chunks of the Appalachian Trail. I plan to ultimately get some glove liners, but that may prove uncomfortable, as I have big hands as it is and bought the large size.
I never felt like sweat or water was an issue, even though it was snowing and my sleeping bag had a fine layer of frost on all exposed areas. Between these gloves and my Seirus balaclava, I have two amazing recent additions that I consider must haves for any of my backpacking trips. Heck, I'm sure I'll wear the gloves out and about from time to time if the weather calls for it.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
I do a lot of cold weather photography with a DSLR and have never found gloves which will keep my hands warm while providing the ability to handle my camera controls until now. These are the perfect solution. I can use my fingers and thumbs when I need to, and then put them back under cover. Also having small as a size choice is great. Most gloves are way too big for me. I have not experienced any problem with the thumb opening gapping to let in cold, but maybe this is because my hands are so small. I would recommend these highly.

works well for my use : for cold morning drives, watching my kids play tennis in sub 30 degree weather, and still having the dexterity to be able to use my fingers from time to time.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
It isn't clear from the pictures that the thumb also has a flap--a great idea if implemented well, but it isn't. The thumb flap doesn't close all the way, leaving a crack about 1/8" wide.
Not big, but I had planned to wear them walking to work in weather as cold as -20F, and they wouldn't have been warm enough because of the thumb.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
This is a nice a practical product that fits well and is fairly comfortable. However, the built in magnets that keep the Mit portion fastened to the back of hand while working with your fingers are very weak and do not hold the Mit in place. I've seen a similar and cheaper product at JC Penny with bigger and stronger magnets for a cheaper price.

Comments about REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens:
Very warm, very convenient to be able to use fingers and thumbs. And the price was terrific! But tricky to take off. The inner fingers tend to stick to the skin, especially after a bit of (inevitable) perspiration. If the inner fingers were wider, they would not take 10 minutes to remove.
