Rated4out of5byRick from IdahofromPositive update to prior reviewThis is an update to a prior review of these pants. I live in Teton Valley, ID and spent over 100 days on skis this winter.
Due to their light weight, these were my "go to" shell pants for downhill skiing when it was not storming, The cuffs are just large enough to fit over my ski boots. Although the pants are not reinforced for DH skiing, I had no problems with cuts, abrasions, or tears (I am not an aggressive DH skier).
I also used these pants for cross country skiing when it was windy, stormy, or cold. For example, I wore these over a synthetic base layer for a cold Nordic ski race (it had "warmed up" to around zero F at start time). Although I felt I was pushing pretty hard during the race, I never felt clammy or damp. By the end of the race (~90 minutes), there was a layer of frost on the outside of my pants, but my base layer remained comfortable.
Note that eVent does not stretch, so fit & product design are critical. In my case (5'-11" & 190 lbs) the large size pants fit well (with suspenders) and provide reasonably unrestricted movement. They are just fine for walking, running & skiing. However, they would bind a little if you were, for example, climbing up/down a ladder.
Based on a couple of years of experience with these pants and similar REI eVent tops, I would rate eVent breathability as noticeably better than thin nylon taffeta (like that used on many ultra-lightweight wind shells); noticeably better than "traditional" waterproof/breathables, and comparable with the breathability of single-layer soft shell material.
In my experience, eVent has been absolutely waterproof.
The pants are in good shape and I look forward to using them this summer & fall.

Rated4out of5byConstructive InputfromNice Pants -- Strange SizeThe fit here is, well, a bit fitted. So the canned choice of "poor-fit" above is not exactly right, however . . . :
If you plan to layer under these simple rain pants, you may want to take that into consideration. If you are planning on these being your all-day outer layer with a base layer (as opposed to putting these on over hiking pants or cargo shorts), you'll probably be OK. Also, since the pants have minimal features, there's no trap-door for winter use and getting them on or off over cramp-ons could be interesting. Otherwise, the eVent is pretty trick stuff and the light weight and "single layer" construction without any mesh lining is great. So, with the foregoing qualifications, recommeded.

Rated4out of5byRick from IdahofromGreat pantsHave used REI eVent jackets for a couple of years now. I have found eVent to be waterproof, and as breathable as softshell fabric. I purchased these "rain" pants to use over synthetic tights as my go-to wind/rain pants where versatility & packability are needed. I first used them for an afternoon of downhill skiing during a wet rain/snow drizzle. Although it felt like I was sitting in a cold puddle every time I rode the ski lift, the seat of my base layer was dry when I got home. The pants also provided good wind protection. I am 5'-11" and weigh 190 lbs. The large size fits me very well. I did sew in some suspender loops for pairing with a pair of OR suspenders. This worked very well and would be a good feature for REI to consider adding.
