Platypus Platy Bottle - 70 fl. oz. is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for backpacking I have two of these for backpacking and day hiking. They work great, take up little space when empty, never leaked, don't slosh in my pack if I squeeze the air out. However, nearly impossible to fill these from a lake, pond, or stream pool without using another bottle, so I need to carry a rigid bottle in addition to these. Any water bottle you buy at the supermarket will work, I prefer the 1.5 liter size with small cap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very pleasant surprise I recieved this as a Christmas gift a few years ago from my sister and until I used it I didn't think much of it. Since then I have been convinced that it is one of the best bottles/hydration systems you can buy. My first time out with it I just used it as a back up water source on a car trip. Then I started taking it when backpacking for extra water storage with little weight. A while ago I got the hydration hose and when my camelbak bladder was stolen, my platypus became my primary system. My favorite thing is that with multiple bottles you can just switch the hose from one bottle to the other, pack the first down small and get back on the trail. The only downside is the small opening size, but if you are only going to use clean water and dry it out between uses you shouldn't have a problem. I have used it backpacking, day hiking, and snowboarding for four years and haven't had one issue.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for casual use I've carried this on a few weekend hikes now and I really like the light weight (less than a 1L Aquafina bottle) and it really does fold up nicely into a small spot when empty. However, I found a lot of inconveniences with it. It's nearly impossible to use to scoop water out of a stream unless it's more than 5 inches deep. It also gets very "floppy" when less than half full making it slightly awkward to drink from unless you plan on chugging the whole liter in one go. And forget abot using a Steripen with it. When you invert the bottle to swirl the water after putting in the steripen, it just falls over. Lastly, and the reason I wont be taking it on any more hikes, is that it is impossible to put back into the mesh side pockets of my Osprey pack while wearing it. The thin rim of the recessed/folding bottom always catches on the mesh and it get's worse as the bottle gets more empty. I'm just tired of struggling with putting it back in every time I take a drink. This thing is great for casual out and about purposes, but for my hikes I'll take the extra few grams and volume of a 1L Aquafina bottle.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Almost flawless. I recently purchased the 2ltr because I am going with a group of 4 on a 5 day hike out west. I took it with me on an overnight hike last weekend, and it performed perfectly. It weighs nearly nothing, so it is a very convenient way to bring along some extra water storage. On the hike, I filled the empty bottle about a mile before we set up camp. It is pretty bulky when full, so I used my sleeping pad straps to hold the bottle. I didn't secure it very well, and it fell out when I was walking. It fell straight onto a rock and tumbled down some more rocks about 5 feet or so. Through all of that, there was no damage to the bottle, so I just secured it a bit better and went on my way. When I got to camp, I had enough water for 2 dinners, two packs of oatmeal, two cups of coffee, my buddy's dog, and still had half a liter left over. During the hike, the product performed perfectly, and I had no issues at all. The problem came when I got home and needed to clean the bottle for storage. I opened the bottle and ran some tap water to rinse off the dirt on the outside and set the bottle aside to dry. The next day, it was still wet on the inside, so I turned it upside down to drain. Then I noticed mildew growing in the base of the bottle. I cleaned it with a few tablespoons of Clorox, and turned it upside down again. Here we are 4 days later, and it has mildew again and will still not dry completely. This would have 5 stars, but as of right now, it is a single-use product because I am not drinking mildew! (Note that I also have the zip-up hands free reservoir, and it performed flawlessly AND dried out within a day.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpacking bottle I have had a few of these for over a year now. I use them constantly and always have one or 2 with me on backpacking trips. They are great for around camp, to carry extra water, or as a backup for when your reservoir decides to leak. They are very tough, one of mine has thousands of miles on it, and is still going strong!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very difficult to fill I agree with the reviewer that said that this bottle is impossible to fill from a lake or stream. I also had to move the water from my cooking pot to the platy. It is annoying, but not the end of the world. However, do NOT go backpacking with this as your ONLY water container! But other than that... it is a great bottle. Folds up. Easy to store in backpack. No sloshing sound or water weight shifting. No plastic or other tastes (unlike reused Gatorade or soda bottles). Water tastes like water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Definitely pros, definitely cons. I got one of these to supplement my 3l camelback reservoir on a desert hike. It came in mighty handy when my camelback accidentally got pinned open and leaked all its contents (luckily, I still wouldn't have been in danger of dehydration just yet at that point). I think for that reason, I'd keep a couple of these in my pack even with a big external dromedary just to limit single points of failure. Unfortunately, they're not as totally ideal as they look. The small outlet is very convenient for pouring, but very much not so for filling. It also makes cleaning nearly impossible, and drying about as hard (even with the bottle propped open on my counter, it still isn't dry inside two days later). I'd probably prefer the Nalgene soft canteens, except they don't come in 2+liter sizes and they have their own problems with the bulk of the lid. Bottom line, a system with a flush-mounted wide mouth cap like the dromedaries use would probably be better, but for the extra weight and >2x cost, I'll probably get a couple more of these and just live with the disadvantages.
