Used these up at Breck over the '13 Winter season -- temps and wind chill got down to about 0 degrees Fahrenheit and these kept the legs nice and warm while riding up the lift and were breathable enough to not overheat my legs when carving up powder and tree runs. They were a bit of a tight fit but still comfortable. Probably needs a pinch more elastine to make them more form fitting but overall, I'd recommend these as a warm base layer.

I work outside alot, and have worn these along with the HW top in temps as low as 17 below. They work great as far as creating heat with the fleece lining, retaining heat, and wicking sweet. Also, I've done some snow camping and use these too change into at camp too maintain warmth overnight.They're a little heavy too carry, but well worth it. I run hot most of the time and would not wear them at or around freezing especially if I'm active. With a wind proof and water proof shell they perform perfectly. Price is good. I think I spent right around $100 for the top and bottoms.Compare that with other brands ie. smartwool, patagonia, NF, MH, and rei is much cheaper and still gets the job done.

Great product. I purchased this because I get cold all the time.
Sizing:
I am 5'10" with a 31" waist. Average to muscular legs. I purchased a small and they fit pretty snug. I like them that way though, as they stay put. They stop right at my ankle, unlike the loose look in the picture. You can extrapolate your size from there.
They were not as warm as I would have thought. They help down to about 10deg. below my "comfortable indoor temperature" when still. I wear these under my slacks to work, so perhaps there is a bigger difference when using more insulated layers. However, when walking outside they do make a noticeable difference in keeping the biting wind out.
They are a tad stiff (presumably because of the snug fit), but not enough to make it uncomfortable. They do not snag, and have good stitching.
They breath very well. No sticky, humid feeling. Easy to air dry after washing to extend life. I am wearing them now and contemplating purchasing some more with them on sale.
Not magically good, but better than nothing. Oh, and I have never been able to successfully use a fly without making a mess, but these stretch enough to drop the front. And I dont feel like a girl doing it.

This is a great product for the money. I purchased a couple pairs for a trip to Alaska in 2011 and they did the trick. They are comfy, very durable and layer well. Also stay fairly warm when wet. I would shy away from using these for running, football, track or other activities that require full range of motion in the legs as they don't have enough elastic qualities to stay put for that type of thing. I have worn them snowboarding without any issue's. I liked them enough that I got another two pairs recently and can't tell the difference between them and the ones that are almost two years old.

REI must have hired the same feminist designer from Patagonia that had removed the fly from the Capilene 4 longjohns too... but they recently put theirs back in so I'll be spending the extra $$ to buy those..
WHY would anyone wearing the heaviest weight long john want to have to drop trou to relieve themselves ? !! I guess REI relented to their weekend warriors that use them for PJ's and/or jogging instead of staying true to the design for those that need heavy weight for extreme uses...

Put them on in the house and my legs where to warm. I bought them for a ski base layer and I love them. If you are buying them for around the house/ PJ's then I would get a size larger. My wife and I both like the looks of them. To early to tell how they will hold up over time, but they seem to be of good quality.

This new incarnation of "Polartec" sucks. I think I am colder wearing these under a pair of jeans than not wearing them, as they seem to actually suck heat from my legs. They provide less insulation, less wind resistance (even simply walking!), and less comfort than the previous fleece and spandex version of "Polartec". The fit is loose and so they bunch up with activity. The only superior feature they have which the previous "Polartec" did not have is a fly.
They are okay for wearing around the house or as sleepwear, but find something else for any outdoor use.
And what is it with the slew of current underlayer products for men which do not have a fly? These are products for MEN. Men do not need to pull down their pants to relieve themselves. Obviously these are being designed by women and I believe it is part of a conspiracy to negate the advantages in this regard of being male, further emasculate men, and promulgate the myth that there are no differences between the sexes.
