- Side zippers run the full length of the lower legs; together with thigh zippers they allow quick conversions without having to sit down
- They also preclude the need to slip lower legs sections over messy boots when converting from pants to shorts along a muddy trail

I'm an avid hiker, and small. REI's Sahara convertible pants from about 2003 fit me perfectly. Subsequent remakes went from bad to worse. At first I thought they'd gotten it right this time. But then I found that the inseam in the size 6 is around 29", about like a "regular," and with the full length zipper there is no reasonable way to shorten them. Sad.

I agree with the other reviewers that the pants are rather long for a petite size, about 1.5 inches longer than most petites. I am baffled by the review stating that the fit in the legs is "trim"; it is, instead, massively baggy. I suspect that the trim reviewer wears a small size and that the manufacturer has simply made all measurements bigger for the larger sizes, rather than keeping normal proportions. In size 14 the legs flapped around with seven inches of fabric to spare, doubled (when you pull the fabric straight out to the side against your leg, it comes out 7" to the side, not at all like the photo). That is, the circumference of the leg was 14" wider than my actual leg, at the thigh. HUGE. Very good pants otherwise, but I'll have to think about whether I can stand the look and the flapping in the wind. Especially not a good look for a short person who wears a larger size.

Finally REI redesigned these pants back to useful! They run large and are about 2 inches too long for me but otherwise perfect. I need lots of robust pockets when hiking,and these are deep and secure. The new no-sit zips are very nice to avoid slipping them over muddy boots.

My favorite model version is still the '05-'06, but this is much better than the low rise debacle of the most recent past. I'm just over 5 foot, so these pants are still about an inch longer than I would prefer. The sizing is way off though. The '05-'06 model I wore medium, the version after that was size 10, the version after that (low rise) well, they just did not fit at all. This most recent version I wear a 6. I would prefer the front pockets to be just a little deeper though, for stuffing in the various electronics I carry with me.

I bought these pants to wear to Ecuador, traveling both to rainforest and Galapagos Islands. The pants fit great in all respects, very comfortable, loose (nice for hot / humid weather). I particularly liked that they could dry so quickly, even in very humid weather. I could rinse them out in the sink at night and they'd be ready to go in the morning. I took off the belt since it was sort of a hassle, but then the waistband rolled, so that's not a good option. Only changes I would make would be that, when converted to shorts, they hit mid-thigh which is 2 - 3" above comfort level, and seemed tight when I sat down. Also was disappointed in the cargo pockets which are way too small for 'cargo'. Other pockets were normal size, so the 'cargo' should be larger. Wish convertible pants had a 3-way option (to include a 'crop pants' length).

I had such great hopes for these pants. I was looking forward to hiking with them. The fit is atrociously baggy in the hips and thighs and tight in the waist. (I tried them in sizes 8,10, 12) I have a larger waist barely any hips and thin legs, including thighs.
I really liked all of the pockets and the way the cargo pockets did not zip off with the bottom of the pants.
Sadly, I had to send them back.
Regarding recommending them, I would if the person has a smaller waist and larger hips and thighs.

I hike a lot. These pants are so comfortable and easy to zip off when I get too warm. They look great, too. A lot of hiking pants are really baggy, but these have a trim fit, but there is still room when scrambling up boulders. I would say they run a little large because I usually wear a 10-12 and have never worn a petite in pants and the 10 petite fit me perfectly.
