The Patagonia Half Mass is a fully featured courier bag sized to hold enough gear (and a laptop) to keep you going all day. The Half Mass holds your busy life together.

Half Mass is built for bike commuters and sized for a day's worth of gear; padding on the backside and along the contoured base protects the contents and provides structure
Inside, a padded computer sleeve cradles a 17 in. or smaller laptop safely off the bottom; sleeve secures with a buckle and strap
Main compartment features a drop pocket that secures with a hook-and-loop tab, a mesh pocket, a padded electronics pocket, pen sleeves and a secure zippered pocket
Cover flap overlaps the sides of the bag to block rain; zippered pocket on flap has moisture-shedding reverse coil zipper

This bag gets 5 stars b/c it is awesome. But the reviews lead you to believe it is way bigger than it is. I got mine and tried putting a laptop, running shoes, shorts, and a t-shirt in it. Those fit, but nothing more. I can't get my lunch or anything else in. Forget about picking something up at the store. Or carrying a jacket. I am returning and getting the Critical Mass.

I've been commuting on a bike with this bag for a couple weeks and it's been great. It's seems to be solidly built despite being light. I bought it for the stabilizer strap which has worked well for keeping the bag from sliding to my side. Also, they did away with the velcro that a lot of bags have under the flap which I always found to be loud and cumbersome.

I got this bag for my boyfriend who cycles frequently to school. I was worried that it might be too small when I ordered it, but it is a perfect size! He loves the look, color, style, and space that comes with this. The shoulder strap is adjustable, and fits him well. He can easily fit his notebooks, laptop,a few clothes and most importantly his water bottle. Patagonia continues to be one of our favorite brands!

The absolute most important feature of this bag is the secondary strap that keep the bag on your back.... where it belongs. Other bags ( some north face options) I have tried do not have this strap and nothing is more irritating or unsafe about having your pack slide around to your front side while riding. I bike to and from work and school 5-7 days a week and carry a lot of stuff back and forth.Has plenty of room for a notebook, a textbook or two, extra clothes, bike lock, and food & drink. Overall the format and layout of pockets is fantastic, and if you have daily bike commute I can't recommend this enough. This pack is purpose built for bike riding/ commuting.

I use this for nursing school, a couple of our required reading books can weigh 22lbs./book plus a labtop and binders. This bag is incredibly comfortable and the strap was a big seller.

My wife uses this every day in her role as a special ed teacher and has been delighted with it so far. She stuffs it full every morning and brings home even more at night. A very nice bag that is roomy and comfortable to sling over her shoulder and go.

Love this bag! I chose to get this one instead of a custom Timbuk2 bag, and I'm so glad I did! Not only did it come in a color I loved (purple!) but it works perfectly for what I need. I'm a grad student, and between work and night classes, I have to carry a LOT of stuff sometimes - I thought for sure this bag wouldn't hold everything, but it DOES! Big books, lunch, thermos, water bottle, binders, everything! I even managed to stuff my spring coat in there the other day! It's also pretty darn waterproof, very comfortable to carry, and easy to take on the bus. I love the front pocket on the flap to put my bus pass in for easy access! Overall, the perfect bag for my purpose, at a much lower price than the alternative!

My boyfriend and I both bought these bags. We're both young professionals. We like these bags because they look more professional than backpacks, and cooler than laptop bags. We both use them while biking to commute to work or to run errands. It's got a nice reflective piece on it, which is great for biking around in the winter time (when it's dark out early). It also has a nice coffee mug holder on the side of it, which is great (notebooks and important papers are no longer covered in coffee stains!). The only complaint is at first we were very confused about the strap. At first it seemed small and like it isn't long enough. We spent a long time looking at them/trying to fix the straps, and even contemplated returning the bags. But we soon found out that once you put a few things in the bag, the weight of the items pulls the bag down so it's not like a bag in your armpit. The length is good so long as you have a few things in the bag.

It definitely is sturdy and made out of great material, as advertised, however I found it much bigger than I expected. I am a soon to be Grad student, and I wanted something to hold my computer, a book, maybe few notebooks, but was more "stylish" than my backpack and more convienient.

This WOULD have been in, however the strap length is so awkward!! It does not adjust well at all!! I wanted it longer, but the strap padding was so big that it was in the way when I tried to adjust the plastic piece and it wouldn't fit under the strap to continue to lengthen it. If i did manage to wrestle with it long enough to get the length correct, it was at the sacrifice of the shoulder padding which ended up not on my shoulder, but down around my hip area.

I hope I explained that well... I really was looking forward to it and it was shipped SUPER FAST which was great, but it was not what I expected. I am returning it.
