Comments about REI Centre Peak Jacket - Men's:
I needed an every day jacket that wasn't too heavy and could hold lots of stuff. It's a little heavier and warmer than I was looking for but it works well for the very mild Northern California winter.

Casual wear when temperatures are not too cool, it helps break the wind chill as well.

Comments about REI Centre Peak Jacket - Men's:
I bought this jacket for my boyfriend and he loves it. When he wears it out he gets compliments on it all the time. He says it's warm, dry and comfortable. The sleeves are a little long, but other than that, it's perfect.

Comments about REI Centre Peak Jacket - Men's:
Kudos to REI for adopting Polartec PowerShield Pro! This is a breakthrough fabric, and it makes the Centre Peak a great update to REI's softshells.
I'm impressed. There are several boutique companies out there now making a jacket out of PowerShield Pro, but none are doing it at this low a price point.
PowerShield Pro fabric seems to me ridiculously breathable. I've run in it, biked in it, skied in it, ice climbed in it, worked under a downpour in it - without overheating. You name it, this fabric handles it. It's exceptionally water repellent, and will remain so when you treat it periodically with Nikwax's Softshell Proof. (Polartec claims its hydrostatic head resistance is 5000mm initially, and 3000mm down the line. 5000mm is the equivalent of your tent's waterproofing.)
One caveat: While this jacket will cut out wind, the thinness of PowerShield Pro material also leads to lower warmth than you'd find in a more traditional, fleecy softshell. Hence, when temps are freezing, wear this shell with at least a midweight baselayer under it. In fact, try REI's, which is cut from Polartec Power Dry - also an absolutely outstanding performer when it comes to wicking sweat off your skin.
You may have heard of the even newer Polartec component called NeoShell that came out in late 2011. The distinction is this: NeoShell is a 100% waterproof shell (estimated at 10,000mm hydrostatic head) that, like Mountain Hardwear's DryQ line, breathes somewhat better than the most breathable hardshell, eVent. If you're engaged in sustained, high-intensity aerobic activity in the elements where you want to avoid overheating, PowerShield Pro is the material you'll want to wear, as its breathability definitely exceeds what a NeoShell or DryQ jacket will be able to do for you.

Comments about REI Centre Peak Jacket - Men's:
This is the most versitile jacket I've ever owned. It sheds sleet, snow, and mild to moderate rain with ease, breathes well enough during outdoor aerobic activities, and blocks most (but not all) wind. It keeps me warm from the mid 50s to the mid 20s, depending on what I wear underneath. (Colder temps require a mid-layer, like my slim-fitting, 800-fill Marmot down jacket. On its own, don't expect to wear it much below the mid 40s because it only provides light fleece insulation.) Finally, it fits perfectly and looks great, with a semi-tapered, athletic cut that doesn't bunch up around my middle but leaves enough room for layering. I also appreciate the lack of logos so I don't look like a poser. All in all, it should be on the short list of anyone who wants a soft shell.
