Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
Note: this review compares these pants to earlier models for those who find it useful, since these pants have changed significantly over the years. Skip the next four paragraphs if not interested.
As a great fan of the 2008 model (having purchased multiple pairs in different sizes,) I was tremendously disappointed when the later model was introduced. The length of the petite pants was several inches longer, access to pockets was obstructed by flaps, and the material was very dark gray rather than black, and noisy.
In the current model, the material appears to be the same as last year, but the length is again appropriately petite, and the pocket flaps are gone, although the front zippers are a bit beefy, not as nicely discrete as they used to be. Logos are also more obvious, having moved to a more visible location, on the--ahem--just above a rear pocket, as well as being added to the left front cuff.
My original pants are still in good shape, and remain my five-star favorite due to the black color and stealthier zippers and logo, but weight loss forced the purchase of smaller pants, and this year's model is happily preferrable to all the alternatives I investigated.
The current material turns out to be a just little bit warmer than the old material, which is quite nice this fall, though next summer it may not be as desirable. If the fabric does not rub against itself, it doesn't rustle, and these pants fit me very well, so noise has not been an issue. The rear pockets are now zippered, an improvement over the original model.
I love the attractive fit of the seat and thighs, and new slight flare of the lower leg (and though the practical slightly flexed knees bother some reviewers, they don't seem noticable to me.)
The tough but lightweight softshell fabric's smooth stretchiness, breathability, and weather resistance, combined with offset inner seam placement make it a supremely comfortable choice for everything from bike commuting to pretending to dress up.
The 4 zippered pockets prevent items from escaping while active or reclining.
The Mistral is attractive, practical, and tremendously versatile and comfortable, and best of all, the price, while still high, is lower.

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
I bought these pants in the Bend REI store before a multi-purpose trip to Utah, and I wore them every time I went outdoors to play in the snow. For downhill skiing, I layered two pairs on longjohns under them and was prefectly warm. The cuffs zipped over my rental ski boots, and kept the snow out without riding up. For snowshoeing, the zipper cuffs were trim enough to enclose in gaiters. The pants were comfortable and trim. I wore them from the slopes to dinner one night, and did not feel out-of-place. I am 5'2" tall, 145 lbs, and don't have long legs for my height. The size tens fit me just fine!

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
I am 4"11" tall and 108 lbs. I usually have a hard time finding pants that fit length wise even if they are petites. This pair of pants fit me pretty good. They were a little long but not enough to look bad. I purchased the size 4 petite and the waist was a little loose but fit fine when I put a pair of light thermals underneath.
I was looking for a nice pair of warm pants to wear while playing winter golf. This pants fit the bill. They were warm and worked well when the wind came up.
I would definitely buy another pair especially if they came in another color.
Lastly I was able to purchase them much cheaper when I went to my local REI store and they had 20% off for 1 REI brand item.

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
I am 5'3" and these pants are the perfect length in the petite size. They wear well and look great on. My only beef is that they stretch out slightly by the end of the day. It is very hard to find pants that fit petites well and these pants do just that.

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
I too owned the previous version of these pants, and have to say the changes are more than welcome! Last version was baggy and too long, but I bought them because there is so little available for petites. However, the current version is perfect for me! They are the right length and fit. However, in the old I was an 8 and in these I am a 10. (No wonder women go crazy trying to find clothes that fit.)
I am 5'2", 128 lb. and the current 10 is perfect for me. I wear them on warmer winter days, early spring, and late fall for power walking and snowshoeing.

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
These pants were purchased to wear as a waterproof shell over layers for snowshoeing. The articulated knee is perfect for active wear. Water repellent even after washing. However, they run a bit small. I usually wear size 10 in Liz Claborne or Jones-of-New York jeans and had to get a 14 in these pants. A size 12 would have been perfect if I were to wear them without layers. Still they fit one size smaller than regular street pants. Overall...very pleased with the quality and wearability for hiking and winter sports.

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
I am 4'11" and athletic and curvy 110 lbs. I purchased both the size 2 and size 4. The size 2 was a bit tight at the waistband and rose higher on the waist than I would have preferred, but otherwise fit nicely everywhere else. I prefer a ~5" rise in the front of pants so they are about 2" below my belly button and the size 2 rose to about the height of my belly button. The size 4 wasn't tight around the waist and fit loosely around the legs, thigh and rear however the extra sagging material in the front when I let them sit at about 5" in the front doesn't look nice and end up heavily folding when sitting looking like mens pants. I will keep both pairs since I have such a hard time finding pants of the right length, and keep the size 2 for fall, spring hikes and keep the size 4 so it can comfortably accomodate layering in the winter. REI please make a low rise version of this and I will love you!

Comments about REI Mistral Pants - Women's Petites:
One word "Disappointed" Had purchased a pair of Mistrals a couple of years ago and love them. The material was thicker, warmer and better quality. they were nylon and spandex only, this pair has polyester added. 1st pair I spent a couple weeks wearing while ocean kayaking, they performed. Can't say the same for the new pair. They are fine for less rigourous and warmer temps but do not feel durable, we'll see. Fit is good, they are comfortable. I would really like to see the material change back otherwise ok.
