Comments about GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless-Steel Tea Kettle:

Being a bit of a minimalist, I don't have the need for carrying around a kettle, but I love to car camp on occasion and I thought this would be an excellent addition to my camp kitchen.

The size of the kettle is perfect: Large enough to be used on a Coleman 2 burner stove, and small enough to be used on my micro small Esbit solid fuel titanium folding stove. The bottom diameter is just under 6 inches and is seam free. This along with the rounded edges means that it is easy to clean and won't leak like some crimped bottom kettles have a tendency to do after a few years. The material is a bit thin, so there is a bit of "oil canning" (in and out movement) as the bottom expands and contracts during the cooling and heating cycle. I have not had any stability problems because of this, but I wouldn't recommend using this product on a household glass cooktop, and I certainly wouldn't recommend heating it without water in it.

The opening is around 4 5/8 inches, which is great for getting your hand in there to clean it or placing items in there for packing. The lid fits well but not tightly. It will fall off if you don't hold it while pouring out the last bit of liquid.

If the kettle is left on the heat source too long, the handle will get a bit hot. It is removable, and a bit of appropriately sized heat resistant tubing can be slid on to help keep bare fingers from getting burnt. I simply wear a glove. You can also place the handle completely inside to keep the ends from poking the contents of your pack.

It will hold 32 ounces of water, but that fills it right up into the spout. Realistically, you will want to limit it to around 24 ounces to keep the expanding water from spilling all over your heat source. There is plenty of volume for 2 or three small cups of coffee / tea, and you can easily prepare a one pot meal in it.

I have used this product with all types of stoves. I've found that the 14 gram Esbit solid fuel tabs are more than adequate to boil 16 ounces of water before the tab burns out (with a windscreen of course). My alcohol, white gas, and isopro stoves work very well with this product, too.

Due to the amount of room inside, I am able to place an entire set of Coghlan's stainless steel cutlery, a Timber Creek 10 ounce stainless steel mug, a small Esbit pocket folding stove, fuel tabs, lighter, coffee, and still have a bit of room left. It will also hold an Esbit / Trangia alcohol stove and a small alcohol bottle. Should you choose an isopro stove, both the small 3 1/2 and larger 4 1/4 inch diameter canisters fit inside with plenty of room for most of the small associated stoves similar in size to the Snowpeak Gigapower. I've also found that two 3 ounce packages of ramen noodles can be stuffed in there.

I think this product would make a great addition to any field kitchen.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless-Steel Tea Kettle:

I recently purchased this kettle because I'm a fan of stainless steel cookware. You can use this over a camp fire or hot coals without worry. The kettle boiled water pretty fast as expected (only slightly slower than the hallulite version). The only thing I don't like about this kettle is the tiny latch on the lid. Its very hard to pull up not too mention it will be hot. It lays almost flush with the lid and wants to stick. One must use a fork or knife to get it to lift up and THEN you can take the whole lid off (like trying to pick up a penny on a flat surface). Other than that small nuisance this kettle is of good quality and I expect it to last many seasons.
