by WhitewaterJunkiefromMake sure the battery is NOT VER.2!I originally bought the product in late fall of 2011 on clearance and it was waiting for use all winter. I would rate 5 stars except for the problem I had with the original battery pack and although the solar panel is very sturdy in construction I think that it should be housed in a lightweight case to avoid potential damage (I carry it in a small aluminum case) even though I have carried it in my pack and it has held up fine. My original Sherpa 50 battery was marked on the back as VER.2 and after its second charge it had an internal meltdown of sorts. the case expanded and the screen cracked from what I can only assume was a short circuit or battery cell explosion, but the case contained whatever happened very well and no leakage occurred. I had the pack exchanged by R.E.I. without any hassle and have used my new Sherpa 50 battery without incident for very many multi-day rafting trips and 2 5+ day hiking/boating trips. although the new battery doesn't have a VER # on it I can only assume that it is a newer version and it has performed very admirably. The amount of power this system can deliver for its weight and size is extraordinary, the solar array has never given me any problems despite in essence being made of glass it has proven itself to be very resilient and tougher than one would think. All in all, I believe that whatever problem I experienced with the battery has been solved and I look forward to owning more Goal Zero product in the future.

by Brad JacksonfromVery very pleasedHi Guys, I recently purchased the Shrtpa50 kit and Sherpa UI Inverter for a successful trip to climb Denali this May. Your products worked flawlessly in what I considered very cold temperatures. We had -5 F in the tents (let alone outside) and I left the Goal zero gear outside and at times stored in a duffel buried in snow. The batter...y on sherpa 50 pack seemed to shrug of low temperatures. I personally couldn't see any deterioration in stored power after leaving it in the cold, sometimes after several days. We used this system to charge ipods/phones, sat phones and as a direct charge for my Nikon D7000 batteries through the inverter. I was also impressed that the solar panel was able to charge the power pack in a relatively short couple of hours. I was worried that the sun at high latitudes may have insufficient strength to charge the power pack but this was definitely not a problem. Very impressed. Thank you and I look forward to taking your gear on all my future expeditions.

by waudlobfromIt works! over and over.My son and I went to Isle Royale, MI for an 11 day backpacking adventure. He brought his goal zero rock-out box and I had the Sherpa Adventure 50 and Goal 10 (for the GPS). At first I wasn't sure if it worked because of the limited sunlight. But once we reached the Greenstone ridge it was amazing how fast it charged (direct sunlight =a must). We used it over and over and found ourselves singing quite a bit (rock out box awesome!). I've had other solar chargers, I love this. Very well thought out engineering with how you can charge an iPad, or chain together other goal zero sherpa's, all in all, excellent product, thank you Goal Zero!

by BackpackersReviewdotcomfromGoal Zero actually WORKS!I have tried several solar charging systems in the past and this is the first one I have found that actually works like you would expect. We took this on an expedition to Nepal last year and I was very impressed. We used it over and over to charge our phones and laptops. See my full review at backpackersreview
