Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

Ok, let me first say I purchased this panel as a kit, and I was let down by the battery charger.

Saying that, as a phone charger the panel by itself worked great. During a recent Army field exercise in the Mojave Desert (yeah, lots of sun, lots of heat) I was able to keep all my squads phones charged, including my iPhone 4.

Now…let's see how the improved battery charger works once it starts shipping.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I purchased the Nomad 7 Solar Panel along with the Guide 10 Battery Pack to keep my Droid 2, GoPro, and Garmin Handheld GPS charged for a 10 week trip that I have coming up.

I've been testing it and cycling the batteries for the last few days and while the Garmin Batteries and GoPro charge with no problems, the Droid 2 drains 80% of the battery pack with just 1 charge, It charges it quick (45mins-1hr for full charge with phone on) but leaves me with no other power.

I have yet to try test charging the phone directly from the solar panel, but I imagine it will take more than a few hours to get a full charge (in Colorado, at 8000ft, on a blue bird day, it took 7 hrs to get the Guide 10 batteries fully charged, and 1 hr to empty those batteries into my phone).

Goal Zero's website says that it can charge a smartphone no problem, I could see this working for a blackberry or other low end smart phone, but for an iPhone/Droid you may run into a few problems.

I still have some money left in my budget so I might buy a second panel since they are expandable (4 panels maximum I believe), I'm just not sure yet if the extra weight in my pack is worth it.

Goal Zero's website also says that the Nomad 7 and Guide 10 will NOT charge an iPad, not a problem for me yet, but if you're planning to bring one on your trip get the Nomad 13.5 and the Sherpa battery pack, they may work better for charging your smartphone too.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I just came back from a 5 day backpacking trip at Mt. Rogers in Virginia. I purchased the Goal Zero Nomad 7 about a month ago to charge my iPhone and Petzl Tikka 2 with a Petzl Core Rechargeable Battery. I left the battery pack at home, hoping we'd have clear skies. Otherwise, I figured I would be able to use the iPhone for photos, video and GPS tracking. We had 4 days of perfectly clear skies and the Goal Zero Nomad 7 charged my iPhone from typically 16% charge to 100% charge within 2 hours without any issues. However if a cloud rolled in and blocked the sun, I would have to reconnect the solar panel to begin the charge again. On the one day that it was cloudy I wasn't able to charge my iPhone, but the Petzl Core Rechargeable Battery charged perfectly, even after the sun had set below the mountain range... which really impressed me. I took my iPhone on my backpacking trip so I could use a GPS tracking app, the phone and video features. The GPS app, really sucked the battery dry, so I typically charged my iPhone about twice a day... once in the morning and once in the afternoon, between day hikes to summits.

All-in-all, I'm extremely pleased with the Goal Zero Nomad 7. It worked great with my iPhone on sunny days without the battery pack. It worked outstanding with my headlamp rechargeable pack and I suspect it would be a perfect recharger for my Garmin Edge 305, if I decided to ditch the iPhone on the next trip.

The only thing I'm not please with is that the solar panels rub against each other while hiking, which marred the surface slightly. To fix this, I cut a thin piece of polyester felt to insert between the panels while trekking.

bought this for a 2 wk hike. tested in my full sun back yard. Charged a 1/3 of my ipod battery in 1 hour, but it never charged any more after that left it in the sun for 8 hours. I got 2 hours of play time. I tried it on two different ipods just to be sure, same results.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

This panel is one of the most useful items I have bought so far. It is VERY powerful, not sure why another reviewer based its performance on the charging time for the Guide 10 battery pack which will take a few hours to charge but only take an hour or so to discharge into your phone. The long charging time for the Guide 10 for only 1 hour of discharge into the phone is not a good indicator of performance. There is inherent loss when using it that way in the form of heat in the Guide 10. If you hook up the phone directly to the panel it charges very fast. I have a power hungry Droid X that will charge in 1.5hrs in full sun. My various ipods in about an hour. I can even block one panel and half of the other panel and still get enough juice to get a charge. It is also very versatile with a usb output and a 12v cigarette output. It is not the lightest panel or flexible. Also the connector port does add some bulk to it.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I use this panel every time I go camping and on canoe trips. One thing you must remember about solar panels is that it MUST be a sunny day. Trying to use them on overcast days can be frustrating. This panel has no problem charging my iPhone 4 and iPod. I use the iPod almost the entire time on 3 day canoe trips and the panel has no problem keeping up with it. I charge the iPod first thing until it is fully charged, then I charge the Goal Zero 4 AA rechargeable battery powerpack. The powerpack has enough power to fully charge an iPhone 4 twice. I use the powerpack through the night when there is no sunlight. Overall this is a great panel, if you need to keep your electronics charged to keep the tunes going all weekend long day and night this is the panel for you.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

My wife is going to bike across the country and we camp a lot so we need something reliable and lightweight and durable to charge our portable elec devices -- cellphones and flashlights and headlamps and emergency and weather radio. This charger and the accompanying Guide 10 battery pack work great. The batteries charged in a few hours and recharged an exhausted Droid in less than 1 hour with power to spare -- the battery voltage dropped from 1.34 to 1.254 only. We also bot the larger solar array, storage battery and 2 LED lamps and used them while camping in the Cascades last week. What a relief to not have to listen to the Coleman lantern hiss all evening. We hung the lights over our heads from a rope strung between 2 trees (clothesline) and sat under them. The only thing GoalZero did not provide was the wine and cheese and crackers.

FYI: I just got this a few days ago and am happy to report that it does charge an iPad (1st generation). I was curious, since it's not supposed to charge the iPad, so I followed the instructions and hooked it up. The charging icon in the upper right corner said "not charging" but I left it connected anyway. I checked in about an hour by unplugging it (to get rid of the "Not Charging" icon) and the charge had gone from 6% to 9%. I plugged it back in and in about 7-8 hours it had charged from 6% to 30%. Not super fast, but the iPad's battery lasts a long time, and I'm not taking it backpacking anyway. Will report later on my iPhone 3GS.

ive gone through a lot of solar charges in the past and none could stand up to this product. For putting out 7 watts, it charged my iphone 4,ipod and itouch. i also used it with goal zero's powerpack 10. it worked great at night for giving my phone the extra juice it needed so that i could fiddle around with my apps etc. during daylight it charged all my toys in around an hr from complete dead battery to a full charge. my ipod was a little quicker due to not as much to charge. i really recommend this product for anytype of emergency from a go pack, sporting event to just hiking around the wilderness. Great job goal zero !!!
