Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

My family owns a cabin up in the sierra nevada's and during winter snowshoe trips it is unlikely that there is power at the cabin. So I purchased this panel to charge my phone while away from a reliable power source. I was shocked how fast this charged my Samsung Galaxy 2 phone from 10% to 100% in full sun keeping the panel pointed towards the sun via a retrofitted camera tripod. It did it in 3 hours. I liked it so much I started using it at home also to charge up my phone and in the last 12 weeks that's all I use to charge my phone anymore. I know this isn't going to reduce my carbon footprint much, but heck it's fun to use and makes for great conversation when I'm out and about on business.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I bought this as a replacement for another model that did not work well. The Nomad 7 had short directions and not much of a product description. I initially did not understand that I needed a storage device and the "power port" was not a storage unit. I was able to charge my smartphone with the unit in the window on a cold, midwestern day. Then I realized it was okay to use the Nomad 7 outside in the cold, but my phone wouldn't tolerate it. Then I made the connection that I needed the Guide 10 battery pack and wished I'd bought the combo set. Once I had the Guide 10, I realized how awesome this charger is. But if you just buy the Nomad 7, it will charge your smartphone, iPod, or camera, but you need direct sun to do it. I like that it works in our cold weather in Wisconsin.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

This product destroyed my iphone 3gs. On the box, it clearly said "compatible with iphone". However, after only using it a couple of times, my phone turned off and then never turned back on. Took my phone to a repair shop, but they told me it was fried. I would not recommend this product, unless you feel like gambling with the safety of your phone. Maybe it works with other phones (since Apple products only seem to be compatible with other Apple products), but this did not work with the iphone 3gs...I won't even bother trying it with my iphone 5.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I bought this for backpacking, and it does the job. I really like all the loops, you can strap it to the top/back of your pack and it catches rays all day. I also really like the pouch at the top, easy to stash a battery pack inside and run the cable directly to the charger via the small hole in the side of the pouch. I've used this on many a multi-day outing, and I've been very happy so far.

One note, it doesn't charge my iPhone 4 directly for some reason. My guess is that the output must be too low. So I use the solar panel to charge an external battery pack (mophie, motorola, duracell, etc). And then then battery pack to charge the phone. Adds a little weight, but I'm ok with it.

My only wish is that it were a little lighter. It's about 14 ounces or so, then plus a battery pack or two, it adds up. Overall very pleased with this product.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

I tested this solar equipment today, temperatures reached about 100 degrees F so there was definitely sufficient sun. I was charging my Blackberry Curve 8310 which is about 5 years old. It took about 1.5 - 2 hours to charge from 10% battery to 80% battery. It stopped charging at 80%, I'm not sure why. But I took it back out there a little while later and it charged to 85%. The sun went down so I was unable to see if it would charge all the way. I'll test it again tomorrow. But 80% battery works for me, especially since I usually don't take my phone camping or backpacking. I haven't tried charging my mp3 which is a sandisk sanza fuse. I'm assuming it will charge without problems. The equipment is lightweight and sturdy, but a little awkward to fold up. Not a serious problem for me though.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

Bought the panel with the Guide 10 Plus. The best part of the package is the panel. It charges the Guide 10 Plus in a fair amount time. It charges all my electronic's like they were plugged into the wall and much faster than a computer usb port. Of course I had to wait for a sunny day in the Pacific Northwest. It does a fair job in overcast conditions. After talking with Goal Zero's support team, they advised me that you can combine up to 4 panels. So I bought another panel with the Rock Out speakers. Love the freedom of not being tied to the plug.

Comments about Goal Zero Nomad 7 Foldable Solar Panel:

FYI: I just got this a few days ago and am happy to report that it does charge an iPad (1st generation). I was curious, since it's not supposed to charge the iPad, so I followed the instructions and hooked it up. The charging icon in the upper right corner said "not charging" but I left it connected anyway. I checked in about an hour by unplugging it (to get rid of the "Not Charging" icon) and the charge had gone from 6% to 9%. I plugged it back in and in about 7-8 hours it had charged from 6% to 30%. Not super fast, but the iPad's battery lasts a long time, and I'm not taking it backpacking anyway. Will report later on my iPhone 3GS.

I got this because it was the cheapest solar panel I could find to charge camera batteries. For my cameras, it only puts out enough power to run the chargers at mid-day in strong sunlight. Light overcast stops the charging, and it can't charge in the morning or afternoon. I suspect that it will still charge a phone (USB) or rechargeable 1.5V batteries under suboptimal conditions, but I haven't tried it. I guess it is just too small for my intended use.

Ok, let me first say I purchased this panel as a kit, and I was let down by the battery charger.

Saying that, as a phone charger the panel by itself worked great. During a recent Army field exercise in the Mojave Desert (yeah, lots of sun, lots of heat) I was able to keep all my squads phones charged, including my iPhone 4.

Now…let's see how the improved battery charger works once it starts shipping.
