Comments about MSR Alpine Kitchen Knife:
Last month (Jan. 2012) I emailed MSR asking what variety of 440 steel and how long the tang was. MRS's reply said current production was 420J2 stainless steel and the tang was 1 inch long. There are plenty of comparable picnic knives out there using the same or comparable steel, with better sheaths and costing 25% less.

Comments about MSR Alpine Kitchen Knife:
I like it. Good design, well built, nice performance. The [*] keen edge out of the packaging makes up for the lack of mass, and it'll do a lot more than you'd think a knife that weighs only 1.7 ounces would. If your camping cooking style includes more prep/actual food than boiling, of if you're on a trip where you're going to actually cook, it's very much worth looking into.My one comment veering towards negative: the sheath lacks any sort of blade-retaining catch and can come off very easily. exercise care when removing from your pack, or look into other options for carrying the knife(inside your mess-kit, make your own sheath, etc).

Comments about MSR Alpine Kitchen Knife:
This knife is well balanced and has an ergonomic shape. The blade is 440(probably A) and for the price is well made. Blade is flexible and comes extremely sharp. The blade takes an edge well.
