Backcountry-ready, The North Face Varius Guide jacket offers fortified waterproof, breathable protection. It uses stretch fabric in key movement areas for extra durability and comfort.
- Made from coated 2-layer HyVent™ nylon and stretch HyVent for durable and comfortable protection; features a combination of mesh and taffeta lining
- All seams are sealed for complete protection
- Features a fully adjustable, detachable hood and a brushed tricot collar lining and chin guard; jacket zips up to protect chin and lower face in blustery weather

I bought this jacket as a combine winter and rain jacket. I used to have one of those winter jackets with a heavy liner, but I found a never used it. Instead, I figured this lighter weight jacket would good with other layers as a winter jacket and with nothing as a spring and fall rain jacket. I've only had it for a month, but in that time I've walked many, many city blocks in the rain. It'd defintely WILL NOT keep the cold out by itself, but it has all the proper toold to keep you dry and comfortable.
The only downside I've found is one of the side pockets zippers has broken. I need to take it back to REI to fixing/replacing, but otherwise I've been happy with the jacket.

Husband used this jacket to ski the Austrian slopes and it was very versatile. Able to wear alone with mid layers on warmer days and fit well with Denali jacket for colder days. Husband is 6"0", 175 lbs and fairly broad chested. This fit him well. Blue color was bright with orange contrasting, but not obnoxious and he was easier to spot on the slopes. Only downside was lack of inner pockets since he likes to carry his wallet, sunglasses, and keys in these areas. Luckily his ski bib has a front pocket that he was able to use instead. Overall a good jacket for the sale price.

I purchased this jacket along with the Varius pants for a winter trip to the Presidentials/Mt. Washington in NH. This was to be my climbing/ascending jacket, and unfortunately it failed at one of the most crucial elements I was looking for - breathability. It blocked the wind just fine, was warm enough with the proper base layers, and fit well. However, it did not breathe, which meant the sweat accumulated (jacket was wet inside at -10*F), and as soon as I stopped or slowed down, it naturally got cold quick. It has a few pit zips, but even those helped very little. I can see this jacket working fine for someone skiing down a hill, but if you plan to be active and are looking for a jacket that breathes, skip this one. It's getting returned.

Ok first I wanted something in this row, 1 To be breathable!!!! 2 To be water proof, NOT RESISTANT! 3 To block the wind, 4 To be able to put on layers! I have found that instead of one big jacket that layering is the way to go. I thought 3 into 1 jackets were the answer, but North Face has a great Zip lining that is compatible with some of there other products!(Puffers, Fleeces, which is a lot cheaper for me!!) With the Denali and Diez puffy vest, perfectly warm for any temps on the trail or at camp. While wearing this coat with the underarms zipped open, my 35lbs backpack, I was able to keep dry from the weather, myself, and was comfortable the whole way through! And if you buy the red, A Lot cheaper!!! Cons: people do think that I am snow patrol with all my gear on:) Great Jacket!!!!

I bought this jacket last year. I was looking for something that was windproof and waterproof. I spend a lot of time outside on campus in Minnesota throughout the year and the weather here can really throw some nasty stuff at you. It keeps me super dry in the rain, even in heavy downpours. The hood is even "extended" in front of my face some when it is worn up, so it keeps my face relatively dry too. I wear this jacket in the winter with a long sleeve shirt and a fleece liner (sometimes my Apex Bionic, which doesn't zip in) and because it's windproof, it keeps me really warm. I just layer under it, and I'm good to go out there. I love TNF products; they always wear well and last a lifetime. I would absolutely recommend this jacket to anyone.
