Black Diamond Ultra Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pairis rated4.0out of5by2.
Rated5out of5byfromHard to find any complaintsI use these poles for both day hiking and full on backpacking. These are some of the best trekking poles I've ever come across. Solid with just enough give to be useful in any situation. They have greatly helped reduce the stress and strain on my knees hiking over numerous mountains.

Rated3out of5byfromLight but delicateI have used these poles about a year now. They are supremely light and the folding mechanism is really great. The foam grips are ok, nothing special. They are a joy to hike with and can take normal walking stresses. They are pretty flexy though. If you twist your hand the pole bows to the side more than a stouter, heavier pole would. No surprise there. The small opening on the wrist strap is a nuisance as getting your hands in and out, especially when wearing gloves, takes a lot of squirming. A simple strap setup like on traditional Nordic ski poles would be better. The real problem is that the tip of one of my poles snapped off. I was walking down a gravel road at the end of a hike and as my foot swung forward to take a step I accidentally kicked the bottom of the pole which was touching the ground. The plastic ferrule and basket snapped in half as did the tip of the carbon pole inside. Maybe I just got unlucky, but it did not seem like much of a blow to the pole to have it shatter so enthusiastically. I have replaced these with the aluminum version. Those are a bit heavier, but feel a bit more sturdy (the diameter is larger), and I hope would not suffer a catastrophic break like the carbon models. The carbon models are still nice poles and if you are very gentle with them a pleasure to use.
