Comments about REI Traverse PowerLock Women's Trekking Poles - Pair:

I just completed a week of hiking in Mammoth Lakes Basin with my new trekking poles. I hiked two new trails per day over a variety of terrain suitable to give me wide range of poling experience with uphill-downhill grades, rocks, loose gravel, and granite stairway risers etc. The trekking poles provided the support and balance I was hoping for and they were very effective in relieving stress and strain on my knees in particular. I purchased and viewed the DVD (available at REI) on how to use trekking poles before I went on my trip. The techniques I learned were very useful in teaching me how to get the most benefits from my poles. After two days of trekking, Downward poling techniques became very natural and I was able to quickly make adjustments to the length of the poles depending on the grade and direction of travel. The poles were sturdy and stable. I even got to teach two other hikers I met on the trail how to use their new poles; neither of them were familiar with the techniques taught in the DVD, so they really appreciated the quick lesson. There is one annoying thing about these poles though, and that is the plastic end caps on each of the wrist straps; they get in the way and must be moved out of the way each time you grab the handles after making an adjustment. Otherwise the caps will hurt your hands and make it very uncomfortable to grip the handles. I also plan to buy fingerless gloves to protect the curve of my hands between the thumb and forefinger where the poles swivel as you're trekking. I didn't get any blisters but there is a potential to get one. Bottom line, I love these trekking poles; they they became an extension of my body and will be my companions on the trails from now on.

Comments about REI Traverse PowerLock Women's Trekking Poles - Pair:

5'4" male, 180lbs with small hands. I've learned long ago that "women's" fit my small hands much better than the larger men's grips. I use these for getting to and from working at remote sites(work sites I need to access via helo or boat only) and every trip requires snowshoeing through 4ft(chest deep WITH snowshoes on) powder mostly uphill for about a mile each way through the woods and open areas with 30-70lbs of gear on my back.

Since these are the "powerlock" and I'm assuming that is the reason most of us are purchasing this, I'll start with that. The power locks are made of hard quality rigid plastic. They are simple, fast and strong. As long as the lower lock is tightened a 1/16" more and collapse the poles COMPLETELY, you will not have to worry about the lower section dropping out when the poles are collapsed. You will notice just above the basket(if you have it installed) there is a plastic ledge, just make sure you lock the latch onto the plastic part and not onto the pole. The trade off is that you have to give a little more effort when you extend the lower unit.

The poles themselves are very rigid, they've supported my weight at every angle imaginable while snowshoeing in deep powder while going uphill and downhill(stopped several yard sales from occurring). Common sense but I'll say it anyways, extend both sections equally as not to have one extended more than the other otherwise you will see more flex.

The grips are comfortable and firmer than I had anticipated but definitely not as hard and slippery as plastic grips. Cork NOT AS COLD AS PLASTIC when the temperatures dip.

The straps are soft and comfortable, small amount of neoprene, very small amount but my only gripe is the locking system for the wrist straps. They are quick as they only require you to pull the long bitter end of the strap to tighten them around gloved wrists but that also makes it a pain to loosen them up if you tighten them down to much on accident. Easily avoidable, but still worth noting.

My only true complaint is the basket, it's small. Made of nice softer plastic with sharp teeth for gripping the hard packed snow(doesn't really help with powder) but they are rather small for powder. Not a fault of the manufacturer, just my application of the product is not exactly what was intended. The carbide tip cover is also made of the same soft better quality plastic as the baskets and fits snug to protect the tips(which also have some nice sharp teeth on them).

If you are looking for a very compact(another reason I chose the womens instead of mens, that and I have girly hands), lightweight, sturdy, easy to use set of poles for a good price, these are the ticket!

Comments about REI Traverse PowerLock Women's Trekking Poles - Pair:

I bought these to hike the Camino Frances without any prior knowledge or use of trekking poles. I visited REI and tried all the poles there and decided that I liked the cork handles the best. My hand seemed to not get as sweaty and slippery with the cork. I started out my hike and it took me a few hours to find a rhythm that I liked to use these. I also quickly found out why I needed walking tips for on the asphalt. It can be a bit of a pain to put on and take off the tips so I decided to only take them off on when I absolutely needed the metal tip for traction. They lock in to position easily and I never once had them unfasten. Collapsing is a breeze and the compacted small enough to fit into my small pack when not using. I was using them on many days to keep myself moving as I was exhausted by evening. Coming down the side of a mountain which was loose sand/dirt/gravel and various sized rocks all the way up to boulders these poles saved my [*]! I took the rubber tips off and depended on them for every step not to slide down or step wrong. My friend bought Black Diamond poles and paid an extra $40 for hers. I found now difference in the performance. These are an excellent value!

These were great for a hike I recently went on that had alot of ascents and descents. I realized how much easier it was to go up and down all the inclines and rocky trails with these poles. They are lightweight and easy to adjust. The handle is cork and very comfortable. They just become part of you.
