This chair is hands down the worst purchase I've made at REI. I bought this early last summer and it broke in multiple places within the first 6 months of normal use. It was not abused or misused at all. It was used indoors and a couple times outdoors. The materials and the way it is assembled are absolute garbage. Both arm rests broke. The bolt that attaches bent and the cheap brittle plastic broke on one of the arms so it cannot be repaired. I do not recommend purchasing this chair. It was a total waste of money and is going in the dumpster. I'll never buy another REI chair again!

Just got this and took it on a 3 day trip car camping on San Juan Island. I know I indicated that this is bulky/heavy as a con, but it is worth it for car camping. It is by far the most comfortable folding chair I've ever used. It was so good I fell asleep in it watching the sky before rain woke me and I went into my tent. It is very sturdy (even when reclined) and you won't feel like you will tip. There is a locking mechanism for the recline. Also, the two built in pads are adjustable fro your head all the way to your lower back (independently).

I'm only about 5'6, so for me if it was about 1 inch shorter it would be perfect. Still, once reclined it doesn't matter one bit. I can still get into and out of it easily.

This is going to get secondary use on my home patio this summer. It's more comfortable than any lounger I've ever owned.

Also this is basically the same as the XL model, so reviews there are equally valid.

I bought this chair to use on my summer vacation, a week long camping trip. I brought it home and my husband thought it was so comfy that of course we had to get a second one. It is amazingly comfortable, especially when reclining. The mesh is nice and cool and it dried quickly after an evening rain storm. Unfortunately the second night of our camping trip the bolt snapped and the chair broke when I was attempting to recline. Keep in mind I weigh about 140 lbs. We had to make do by lashing our canoe roof rack straps to the arm to hold the chair together and make it through the rest of the trip, because, really, who wants to squat by the campfire? The good news is that REI's great return policy saved the day and we got a full refund. We kept the non-defective chair and aren't sure if we'll replace the other one or not. So, probably four stars for the one that didn't break. Also, wish this version had the wooden arm handles similar to the la fuma chairs.

This review applies to both the regular and XL size chairs.

Almost a very comfortable chair. However, I'm 6'1", and the headrest pillow does not go high enough. This is actually OK when fully reclined, but not so great when sitting upright. In its highest position I'd need to squat down (like being in an airline seat), which does not make for the best posture.

One workaround is to remove the headrest pillow when sitting upright, but it's a bear to put back on, and you really need it when fully reclined, otherwise your head hits the crossbar.

While this chair is very heavy and hard to drag around, it is very comfortable and cool to sit in on a hot day. I generally use it at home in the backyard for reading and napping. I have not had a single problem with it since I bought it a few months ago but I do wish it were lighter weight and reclined all the way down, but overall I really like this chair.
