The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

by fromTwists rope! Serves its purpose well. Great for indoor climbing. Tends to twist rope after extended use. If you find yourself climbing the same rope time after time it begins to be a problem. My friends and I have all had this belay device at one time or another and we all say the same thing.

by fromClassic design I'm pretty green so take this into consideration. We were top roping and the 10.5 mil rope seemed a little to much for this device. It didn't want to slide through easily which isn't all bad because as I said I'm new to this. The rope was pretty stiff and frozen so that was probably a big factor. Couldn't be any easier to use.

by fromQuick, easy, and cheap Easy to use, cheap, quick to setup, there are better braking belay devices out there, but not for this price, super-lightweight

by fromShould always have on hand Perfect for everything from the gym to rappelling to outdoor top-roping. May want to invest in something with a high friction or auto-locking mode for more advanced stuff but this thing should still be clipped to your harness as a backup.

by fromgo to belay device This is an essential basic piece of equipment to always have in you climbing pack. It is simple and always reliable. And I would say fool-proof...but we know better.

by fromKeep It Simple This is about as simple as it gets for a belay device. You'll see these at every gym, every crag. Great for belaying, great for rappelling.

by fromIt's a necessity. I used these in my mountaineering and rock climbing classes, and I must say, it is very simple to use. Whenever going anywhere with a climbing harness, this should be attached to it. The simplicity of this ATC is what makes it so great. It has two slots, that's all you need. Some of the newer devices coming out have all sorts of the slots and ways to use it. The extra material adds more weight, which isn't needed. The only concern I have is not about the device, but about how much of a necessity it is. It's great to have, but mistakes do happen, and if you by chance drop it of the edge of a cliff on a multi-pitch climb. A munter hint would be nice to know. So I would recommend always have this ATV or something like it with you, and know have to tie a munter hitch so you can belay/rappel in an emergency.
