Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

I have used this pack for everything spanning from a week-long work trip to the other coast, to a month at a time of backpacking across Europe, Oceania, South America, to using it as a daypack while trekking. It has performed admirably well in all things.

But the thing it really shines at is a carry-on sized travel bag: if you can't fit everything you need to last you indefinitely in this bag, you're taking too much stuff. And for travel backpacking, it has the HUGE advantage of opening like a suitcase, so you can access all of your stuff immediately (or in my case, immediately spill all of your belonings onto the hostel floor).

I recommend this bag to everyone, and everyone I've traveled with who's had a different bag has been jealous. It's been through rain, mud, being kicked from place to place, being stuffed to the gills and past the gills for months at a time, and I still don't have a single complaint.

And I've never had to check it as luggage. :)

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

The best features of the pack are that it's panel-loading and the profile is slim. There were two places that I tested this product at: Mt. Kilimanjaro and rush-hour Manhattan. On Kilimanjaro, the pack was rugged enough for a 7 day hike. It was kicked and dragged in mud, dust, and rocky terrain. With the rain cover, it stayed dry in downpours. My friends who came with me used Osprey packs, and the Vagabond seemed to work just as well as the Osprey packs. The urban area is where this pack truly shines. During rush-hour in Manhattan, I've taken this pack through subways, trains, and crowded streets. The slim profile of the pack made it easy to navigate through turnstiles and oblivious tourists. When I was packed in a subway car like a sardine, I took up less space with my pack than my fellow commuters with the ubiquitous North Face packs. Overall, I feel that the Vagabond is a great travel pack for both urban and rugged areas.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

I bought this pack for several of its design features: super easy access from the front, main compartment seemed large with no annoying dividers or bits that eat up space, carry-on capability, lockable. I initially bought this pack for a 3 week trip to Costa Rica and Belize. It fit everything I needed ( I consider myself a moderate minimalist) with a little space left over. Several airlines accepted it as a carry-on. Comfortable to wear on back. A year later I used to travel around Germany. I stayed in hostels and such and interspersed that with 3-4 day long hikes through the Bavarian Alps. THe raincover worked great in rain and snow, and the fit and stability was fantastic when boulder hugging around the Steinermeer (stone sea). The fabric held up despite being rubbed on rocky cliff faces. A couple of pouches on the front of the waist belt held small essentials and snacks. I liked the organizer in the top compartment. Spacious enough to hold passports, money, cards, etc. The organizer was just the right size to hand carry thru airport customs. My only gripe would be the side pockets. They don't really expand well. One is just big enough to wiggle in a pair of flat flipflops. I rarely could fit things in the other side including a water bottle. I don't use that pocket. It is stylish enough to wear through cities on your way to your accommodation. Had the bag for 1.5 years and has not malfunctioned in any way.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

After only ONE trip I am dissappointed. The shoulder straps chaffed my shoulders to the point that I had to wear A TOWEL around my neck to sheild them while walking around with this thing. The buckles got stuck once and seem like they are going to break already. MOre compartments would be helpful, however, I enjoy the sleeker design for a 'backpacking' pack...and no flapping staps all over the place. The belt was too bulky and not comfortable when tucked away. I'd keep this back though, if it weren't for the UNCOMFORTABLE straps...a HUGE flaw.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

I used this pack on a solo tour through Europe. I moved from place to place often, and the pack never failed. It offered more than enough space for all of my things, as well as for everything I bought during my trip. And by the end of the trip, it got pretty full. No matter how much I shoved into the bag, though, the zippers held strong.

I walked around Europe (a lot) with this pack on my back and, even though it was pretty heavy, it was never uncomfortable.

I will definitely use this pack again for all my future travels. It was exactly what I needed.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

Overall design was done right. Negative: Buckles on the face of the pack sheered off on first airline flight. Cinch straps do not snug well when packed if full of bulky items such as a pillow or clothing.

Exterior pocket configuration is unique and fit my needs well with accordion expanding pockets and a bottle holder. Three inside mesh pockets organize perfectly. Panel loading makes getting to everything easy. There is also a top pocket that fits fast access items such as wallet, glasses, passport, and does it well.

I choose the bright orange color as it is easy to identify and hard to miss when traveling with lots of gear or looking for your friend in a busy place.

The waist strap was solid and tucked away nicely when you choose to go with just shoulder straps. The shoulder straps could be more adjustable for comfort. First use, I scrambled on three flight legs with lots of airport corridors, and the shoulder straps became uncomfortable. Overall materials seemed durable, minus the pair of cinch buckles.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

This 40L pack is perfect for week-long business travel or multi-week backpacking provided you are a comfortable traveller and practical packer.

I typically pack 5 long-wearing sets of clothes and travel laundry supplies (Tide travel packs, line, 8 sets of clothes pins) so your mileage may vary with this pack if you want to bring clothing for every single day of your travel.

That being said, it fits perfectly in the overhead of a CRJ200 (Small!), packs down if you're not bringing all your gear out in a day and fits comfortably with a decent hipbelt nicely padded shoulder straps.

It does NOT have ATL however so be sure to try one on with weight before you decide its for you.

Very happy with this pack for commuter travel. It is NOT back country bag. This is my traipsing between hostels and business travel backpack.

My one quibble is the zip pockets on the side do not really stretch out, so they impose on the interior volume of the bag. This can be a pain with non-squishy items like a water bottle in the right hand pocket. I tend to mash my light rain shell in the left one, so it isn't such an issue.

Comments about REI Vagabond Tour 40 Travel Pack:

Just got back from four weeks in Europe, five countries and the same comment from all my friends... "That's all you brought?"

I can't praise this bag enough. I dislike toploaders, and I needed something that had a good backpack to it. In the past I've travelled with a 46L Osprey Transporter but I was always disappointd with the backpack suspension system, and I felt that there really was more capacity than I needed. So I decided to downsize this time.

The backpack suspension system was a big improvement over my last bag, which saved my shoulders from extra aches and pains. As for the smaller capacity I wholeheartedly approve. Sure you have to pack smarter but your pack is just transport, I didn't come to Europe to haul around a bunch of stuff, I came for the experience, and the Vagabond was the perfect answer.

It's technically a bit over the carryon size but I've only once had to check it and the raincover doubles as a transport bag, just throw it in zip and cinch.

Kudos to the Missoula REI for helping me find this bag!

I'm using this primarily for day to day books, laptop, etc. But I wanted something capable of holding more for longer weekend trips like camping. So far it's great. It's rather large, but so I am, so it works well for a normal backpack.
