I got this for my 6 5/8 year old, as an incentive to get outside and active. It's fantastic that she is old enough to hike and haul all by herself. Great size. With added 50oz antidote it is fantastic!

We own two of these backpacks, the eggplant for my 3 year old and the infared for my 1 year old. We were looking for a good fitting backpack for hydration, carry essentials like snacks, sunscreen, sun hat, and jacket. The design is simplistic which is great for us (less pockets to load down). The main body is a single large zipper access opening with a slot for a hydration bladder. We bought the recommended 50 oz. bladder from amazon and it fits perfectly, the only problem was we had to shortern the bladder tube so my daughter could access it correctly when we fed it through the holes designed for it. There are two outer side mesh pockets which fit her .3 L sigg bottle perfectly (if we do a daytrip to Disneyland as opposed to a hike) along with any rocks she or items she often stashes in there. The backpack is a great fit on her little body with padded shoulder strap which curve inwards slightly for a nice fit and the sternum strap adjusted properly, there is minimal movement and she can wear the backpack easily for a 3-4 hour hike or all day running around the aquarium. The sternum straps have a whistle and can slide up and down the shoulder straps to adjust the height of where they buckle. The waist straps are non-padded are nice to completely minimize movement of the bag although I'm not sure how effective they are to distributing weight since we avoid packing the weight down. They're a bit long, but that's fine with us because my son and I can use them for creating our "choo choo" to stay together while manuever through crowds.
My son, who's one, uses it for his daycare pack to travel with essentials (change of clothes, blanket etc) on a daily basis. It's still a bit too long for him, it hits him on the back of the thighs but when the sternum strap is applied he can carry it easily and it's a fairly decent fit for him since he insists on carrying a backpack and he'll grow into it. Also, the front of the backpack has a adjustable bungee strap criss-crosses in front it which is great for his smaller blankets and for whatever stuffed animal is his flavor of the day.

We bought this for our 3.5 yr old daughter (41" tall) to use for a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. She loved the pack, wore it every step of the hike (total of ~7 miles). She carried water (internal pocket for smallish bladder), gorp, and her rain gear and had room to spare. I found the pack to be designed simply, without frills, but more than adequate for the intended age group. I like the bungee straps for attaching loose items without opening pack. Adjustability is good, should last us for several years, then with any luck, we'll pass it along to her little sister. We had thought that she would use it for preschool this year but she wants to save it for special backpacking trips.

I bought this pack for my 5 year old daughter. She used it for her first hike (5 miles round trip!) and had no complaints. She is a smaller, petite child, so the pack was a tad big- we had to tighten the straps up a ton, but with the right adjustments the pack fit fine! Because of her small size I can see her being able to use this for a few more years, at least. I do wish it had more internal pockets or compartments for organization, but other than that I was happy with the pack- especially for such a great price! Overall, a great pack for small kids!

This is a great first backpack for both my 6 and 3 year old as they fit perfectly and have enough room for an afternoon of biking or hiking. The whistle and sleeve for the bladder are great add-ons.

I bought this pack for my 4yr old son for him to use as a day pack and for school. It does everything that we wanted, it works great for school and for the occasional day hike. Fit is just right with the neccessary adjustment for him and capacity is a little small so if your buying for a 7-8 yr old you may want to move up to next one. All in all exactly what we wanted for him.

This pack is great for our (big) 3-year old. It needs more pockets. It only has one internal pouch (for the hydration bladder). External pockets are limited to the two mesh pouches (one on each side). A more internal pouches to organize and even an external pocket that zip would be great.
The recommended hydration bladder, 50 oz., is an odd size. We put a 2 liter bladder in it, but didn't fill it all the way so we could fold the top over so it would fit in the pack.
Our son is about 36 lbs. and 42" tall. It fits him now and should fit for a few more years. This is his camping/72-hour kit pack.

I got this for my 3 1/2 year old so he had a back pack like Dad's. He loved it. He uses it for school and if fit way better tnan anything you can buy in the store and is much more comfortable (at least from my perspective). We went for our first hike together. he was able to pack his camera, hat, blanket (which goes everywhere) and a few other necessities. It is a great product, perfect for the up and coming backpacker.

I just received this product from REI.com along with a second backpack to look at for my 3yr old son. This backpack hit just above his butt and appeared super comfy. He wasn't too sold on this on though.
The bladder area looks awesome. We will probably keep it for hiking and such, just not for traveling like planned.

I bought this for my 6 year old daughter to use as a school pack. It is not nearly wide enough to fit a school folder. it would make a nice hydration pack that your 3 year old could bring along on a day hike. it is well built, but the age range listed is not right, do not get for a child over 5 years old. This pack is of little use to a 8 year old.
