Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I bought this pack for my almost 9yr old son as a pack/bag to store and transport his climbing gear to the gym and the crag. The pack has plenty of room for his harness, helmet, shoes, snacks, water (bladder or bottles), jacket, and misc etc items.

The pack fits him well, and also can be used by an adult for outdoor activities as mtn biking

I bought this pack for my son ( 9yrs ) to store, transport, carry all his rock climbing gear to the climbing gym as well as outdoors. The pack has plenty of room for his harness, shoes, water, snacks, a small jacket etc.. The padding prevents wihining from sore shoulders. This summer will have to see how the pack breaths with the hot summers here in Texas

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I bought this pack for my 5 year old son. We tried it in the store to ensure it would fit him. The straps and waist fit just fit his small body at maximum adjustment. He loves the pack. I also puchased the 1.8L Platypus bladder to go with it. It is a great pack for him to carry his own water, his raingear, snacks and emergency gear. It is very stylish and will be a great daypack for him for hopefully 5 years!

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I bought this pack for my 7 year old in my attempt to get the whole family started backpacking. I have to admit, that I probably bought a pack too small to do much with for that purpose. It's a great day pack, my son absolutely loves it (especially the integrated whistle in the front). I like the fact that there are plenty of side pockets for him to put his stuff in. This bag won't hold a sleeping bag, but I think we've managed to make this a useable bag for him by switching out smaller items in our packs for his sleeping bag, etc. All in all.... so far, so good.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

This is the most perfect backpack for my grandson, age 5 years. He has uncles in the military and is facinated by their gear and tries to wear their packs whcih are very large and heavy. He noticed that none of his backpacks had the chest or waist clips like the military packs, so I went searching for one. This is the only quality youth backpack I could find with the clips. He uses it everyday for school, daytrips and shows it off to everyone.

We bought two of these for our 8 and 6-year-old sons. We were throughly impressed with the quality of the bags, how much they hold and the bells and (literal) whistles they came with. My only wish is that I had one for myself!

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I just bought this for my 5 year old to replace the Deuter Junior pack he had used last summer for camping/hiking/travel and then for school starting this past fall. That bag was actually working fine and had held up wonderfully, but he kept requesting a bag "with zippers" (the Deuter Junior has a drawstring closure and flap that buckles over it, which I guess he found a bit fiddly) and this is perfect - it's essentially the same size but it has the zippers he wanted and a few more features that I really like - most notably the space for a hydration system and the waist belt.

I have a feeling that this may replace his Camelbak Mini Mule on hikes because the waist belt and the convoluted foam on the back will make carrying a load much more comfortable. He's already quite fond of the safety whistle.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I bought this pack in green for my very petite 5 year old daughter when she started kindergarten. First, she has come not to like it because it is a boys color, not pink, does not have any princesses or fairies or flowers on it. Despite that, I think it is a nice pack. I chose this pack over other child packs because it does not seem as heavy, is made with lighter fabrics, and seems sturdy. My daughter is small and the pack extends below her rear, but she is able to hoist it on her back and the straps fit on her shoulders. There is a chest strap, which helps keep it fitted, but she hasn't been able to open and close the clip consistently (she will eventually, a stronger/sturdier kid would not have a problem). I would say that it is built similar to an adult pack and has everything needed to grow into: hip straps and hip pockets (which she uses for change and hair clips), water bottle holders (which she uses), a stash pocket on the exterior, and a smaller exterior pocket for misc. items like pencils (but there is no pencil or organization pockets in the pack). The main compartment holds a few notebooks, change of clothes and is even designed for a water bladder (all this stuff tends to make it heavier for my daugher, but she doesn't carry more than a couple of kids books, notebook and a change of clothes). I would say this is a durable as a regular adult pack. She is not rough with it, but I don't see how she is when she is lugging it to the bus and to her after school activities. After four months, I don't see signs of excessive wear and tear (which would be less as she gets stronger). I would give this 5 stars if it came in pink or purple and had a pencil/pen organization pocket in the main compartment.

I got this for my son's 5th birthday because he wanted his own pack. He absolutely loves it! It is a great size and he can fit his first aid kit (keeps it in the hydration pocket), jacket, camera, binoculars, ranger book, headlamp, bandanna, hand towel, and snacks very comfortably in the large main compartment. In the smaller pocket on top, he keeps his sunglasses and NP Passport. Lip balm fits perfectly in the waist pockets. He loves the whistle on the chest strap.

Take note: This bag is not water resistant at all!! Be sure to put things you don't want ruined (like NP Passports) in a plastic bag or get a waterproof bag cover.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:

I'm 5'3" and 100lbs and have been looking for less than 20L backpacks/hiking packs for a day trip. This product is for kids, but it actually fits pretty well to my petite body. I bought REI Stoke 19 Pack for my husband and tried it on as well. The size is almost identical but the shoulder strap is longer in REI Stoke 19 Pack (REI Tarn 18 Pack is perfect for me.) It's bit silly to wear kids packs but it fits well, so why not?
