Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
This was a replacement pack for my 8 year old who previously had the Osprey Jet Daypack, which didn't last very long. It ripped within the first 6 months of daily school use.
Highlights for this pack are:
- Nice quality of fabric. Heavy nylon. No thin cordura.
- Quality stitching.
- Light-weight.
- There's an inner pocket in the main compartment that can be used as a water bladder holder or school folders. There's a hose hole on the top of the bag too.
- Large waist buckle, which is handy for smaller hands.
- Zippered waist pockets.
- Heavy duty meshing for side and back pockets.
- Pleasant design.
- Main compartment has key chain loops.
- Attachment options. Lots of little loops for small caribiners or elastric shock chord.
- An attachment option on the lower rear of the bag for a clip-on bike light.
Improvements:
- The back/rear mesh pocket could be larger. But then this is a youth pack.
- More color options.
All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. This youth bag will definitely withstand the rigors of school use, travel, and day hikes. Although I love my Osprey Atmos pack, I highly recommend this REI pack!

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
I got this pack for my 48" tall six year old, knowing that she'd be on the lower end of the sizing. She loves it, was BOUNDING down the trail shouting, 'this is the best day of my life'. I think that pretty much says it all. If anything, I'd have a 35-50 oz bladder included with the pack.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
My 9- and 11-year-old use this pack for our hiking adventures, and the fit could not have been more perfect for both of them with how easily the straps are adjusted. I love that these are designed to be age appropriate, have plenty of room for their gear without being so big that they overfill, and have plenty of room for the treasures they inevitably find on our adventures.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
We recently required all of our Bear Cub Scouts to "pack their own pack" and carry their own packs on hikes. Getting them to understand the basics (10 essentials - and these are listed on the inside of the packs top), and getting used to carrying a pack of their own.
I went with a few of our parents to REI and this was the pack I picked for my son. The fit is right on for a 8 to 10 year old and has more than enough room for a dayhike or overnighter. The kids were excited to pick out their packs, try them on and find they were comfortable to wear.
The only downside, which to some is an upside, is a bladder is not included with the pack. However this is a relatively minor omission.
As of right now we have 12 Scouts using this pack and not one has been returned or changed.
Great product and glad to see a pack and equipment for the younglings.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
Fits perfectly for my 9 year old and 52" height son. Like the exterior web pockets for water bottle and snacks. Built just like an adult version pack but smaller. No complaints that it was uncomfortable on our hike....so all is well.

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
I bought this for my 3 year old son to take to preschool. I had tried other "school packs" and although they have plenty of space, none of them seemed to fit well. My son is a bit tall for his age and this pack fits perfectly. He seems to like wearing it. Since it is highly adjustable, it sits properly on his shoulders and does not slip. The padding in the back and shoulders is excellent and the quality overall is high.Plenty of small pockets for school items. The slip pocket on the inside of the main compartment can be used for a water bladder or a cased ipad. It is a nice looking pack also.

THIS BACK PACK IS GREAT!
FOR HIS/HER FIRST HIKE THE QUAILTY IS AWESOME.
IT BIG ENOUGH FOR A KIDS KELTY SLEEPING BAG AND WATER BLADDER. ALONG WITH SOME OTHER GEAR. OF COURSE SOMEONE WHO IS 6 WILL NOT CARRY ALL THERE GEAR BUT THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO START THEM ON THAT TRAIL. AND ITS A GREAT MOTIVATOR!!
SHE SAYS SHE LOVES EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. AND WOULD NOT CHANGE A THIG

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
Our troop headed out for a full day of camping, and without a campsite, we packed our daughter for a day's worth of supplies, minus food. She held up extremely well, carrying a full water bottle, towel, her Sit-Upon, chapstick, bug repellent, and sunblock. I think she managed a flashlight and a couple other small things. Overall this pack was easy for her to get on and off, strap and unstrap, zip and unzip, and she really appreciated having the waist pockets for her chapstick! Not once did anything fall out, including her water bottle.
She is a petite 1st grader, and this pack was just what we needed. She can't wait to wear it again for her school's walk-a-thon and the camps she's attending this summer. Thanks for a great product REI!

Comments about REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youth:
I gave this to my 9 year old grandson for a birthday gift. He has started day hiking with us and could use his own day pack. I went to our local REI to compare. The Tarn won out. The straps and hip belt are very adjustable, and the variety of pockets are great for snak storage and water bottles (he doesn't have a bladder yet, although this back can handle one). He wore it on a 5 mile hike with a pretty steep ascent and was very happy. The wide opening of the main compartment was perfect when he wanted to stow his hat and hoody. The construction is right up there with other packs and the design doesn't scream "I'm A Kid!".
