Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. REI Tarn 18 Pack - Youthis rated4.381out of5by21.
Rated4out of5byfromGreat for the kids to carryGot this and the Sprig 12 to take my 5 and 6 year old kiddos to Grand Teton NP for a 2 night backpack trip. Capacity is enough for their sleeping bag, some snacks, and water. REI thought of the essentials when designing it; bladder pouch for hydration, compression straps around the sides, safety whistle on the sternum strap, and expandable mesh pocket on the outside to stuff a light jacket or poncho. It is well made--stitching is tights and straight. Straps are of quality materials and buckles give a nice "click" when secured. On the flip side, the hip belt can barely go tight enough for my twig-framed kids. They are slimmer and smaller than most kids their age, so I can't complain too much as my genetics are to blame more than the pack designers.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat combo right hereThis pack was a great find. I have been looking at Osprey packs for my son but didn't want to shell out for something I'm not sure he will dig. For my son 5 years old, 60 lb, this pack is the perfect size. Has hip-belt pockets that carry his goldfish cracker's and his Channel Craft J. J.'s Canoe Knife. Biggest selling point for me was price, capacity, and pockets. For my son, the selling point was the reservoir pocket. He loves carrying a bladder so he can sip as we walk.

Rated4out of5byfromI would buy this product again. We are using this product for my 8 and 5 year old. It is a little long for my 5 year old, but he will grow. I like the separate inside pocket for the water bladder. The waist strap pockets are nice so the kids can have their own chap stick. The smaller outside pocket is great for snack storage. The outside mesh pocket is great for quick access to gloves, hat and small winter gear. This pack also has 2 side water bottle mesh pockets. The main pocket fits my kids winter jackets when they are too warm on a winter hike.

Rated4out of5byfromSolid Backpack for kidsI purchased this pack for my 6 year old son for kindergarten. It is a little big for him now, but he should grow into it nicely. The padded straps are very comfortable, the emergency whistle on the sternum strap is a great idea, and it holds his folder, lunch box, and jacket every day. We are quite happy with the purchase and it meets our needs. My only minor quibble is that it could use another small pocket on the inside of the main compartment to hold some money, medicine or even a cell phone. There is a small exterior pocket at the top of the pack, but if it isn't zipped up completely, items could fall out.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat for kidsI purchased this backpack for my seven year old son for back to school this year. He loves it! It's comfortable, lightweight and has great compartments for his morning snack at school as well as his water bottle. Compared to the other backpacks I have purchased for him the last two years, this one is great because it stays on his shoulders and has an extra buckle that straps around his waist for added support. Another nifty feature we noticed after he brought it home is the whistle attached to the chest buckle that straps cross his chest.

Rated4out of5byfromnot just for the kids!I am a 5'1" 120 lbs woman and this pack is great for me! I was looking to an upgrade from my old 8L Camelbak, and this fits the bill. It holds raingear, an extra layer, snacks, and other necessities easily. I just wish it had a few more pockets for better organization, but it still works great for me. Of course the pack is made for a kid's shorter torso, but if I loosen the straps a bit, the hip belt hits perfectly and it's not a problem. A good, less expensive alternative for those on the smaller side looking for a solid day pack.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat pack for a kidI bought this back for my 10-year-old to use on a 5-day backpacking trip in Yosemite (41 miles). He typically carried 11-13 pounds. The pack worked very well for him.

Rated4out of5byfromTarn tootin'Since most backpacking packs are too large for a 7 year old, I chose this pack for my son in preparation for a 5 day backpacking trip in the Adirondacks high peaks region comprising of Mt. Marcy, Skylight, Colden and 32+ miles. We tried it out many times as a day pack prior to the trip and it performed well as hydration pack and was large enough for my wife (too small for me)to carry enough for a family of four. On the trip, my son was responsible for carrying his own 1.5L hydration bladder in the ample sleeve of the pack (could fit 2-3L bladder) as well as his sleeping bag (REI ZONK 25F). This maxed out the pack but worked. The outside loops and pockets allowed additional attachment points for hiking poles and crocs and I never heard a complaint about the pack being uncomfortable. CONS - The hip belt pockets don't hold much (3 snickers minis) and loosen over time (double back?). The shoulder strap padding rubbed my sons neck raw at one point. The side straps should be moved up towards the top of the pack to help with bulkier loads.
