Comments about Deuter Fox 40 Pack - Juniors':
Purchased the pack for my 12 year-old son for an overnight backpacking trip into the Shenandoah's to one of our favorite fly fishing spots. We were carrying all our fly fishing (waders, boots, rods, etc) as well as camping gear and I was amazed at how functional the Deuter Fox 40 was for fitting everything my son needed. The pack is sturdy, made of seemingly good quality, heavy material (ballistic nylon). The side pockets and straps held a four-piece rod tube and water bottles perfectly and the loops and straps all seemed to be in just the right places to attach gear. The 40 liter capacity was ample for sleeping bag, clothes, and misc gear. All the straps and loops held up fine, even though we needed to dangle his wet wading boots (heavy when wet) from the loops on the back of the pack. The back straps are also easily adjusted so you can have the pack ride as high as you need depending on the load distribution. The hipbelt seems well padding and has good width. One thing I noticed though, is that it's important to take the time to make the harness and hipbelt adjustments completely before youthful exuberance to get going takes over. This helps to avoid pressure points on the hips that tend to creep up after a couple miles on the trail. All in all, my son likes the pack and I'm very pleased with the purchase.

Comments about Deuter Fox 40 Pack - Juniors':
This is my son's first Boy Scout backpack for extended hikes and overnighters. He is a skinny active kid and weighs 78 pounds. This pack fit his current torso and waist size and has enough room to grow with him for a while. He loaded it up this morning with the gear he needed for an overnighter. The weight came out to be 19lbs. He carried it fine on the three mile test hike and said it was comfortable and well padded. He loves it and is so proud of it. It has the right amount of pockets, loops and straps. We didn't add in or use a hydration system, but there is space available for it.

Comments about Deuter Fox 40 Pack - Juniors':
I purchased this for my 6 yr old because it will fit such a wide range of sizes. It is easily adjustable, and adjusts in one inch increments. I used it on one trip where I put it on one of my 4 yr old twins, it was too big for him but it worked, but decided I needed a 2nd Camel Back. This bag adjust so much, that I extended it to its max size, and used it for day hikes from camp. It fit's my son's sleeping bag just fine, which is fairly compact; it is the North Face Tigger. I expect him to use it through scouts until he's nearly full size, and we get him an adult bag. The quality is great, and I fully expect it to last a long time.

My son is going to be crossing over to Boy Scouts next year, and I purchased this as a first gear item to hopefully help make getting his stuff in to summer camp this year easier. The amount of torso adjustments means this bag should last him for years. The sleeping bag (Mountain Hardwear Lamina 35, for reference) I got for him fits perfectly in the bottom of the bag, even uncompressed (but in the compression bag). When I compressed it and tested the fit again I had enough room beside the bag that I could have fit a bag liner or perhaps on overbag next to it. Quite happy so far with the amount of room, it was easy to adjust for his torso length, and he says it's comfortable. Will get it's first test run this next week. :)

Comments about Deuter Fox 40 Pack - Juniors':
We own 2 Deuter adult size packs and absolutely love the room and comfort so ordering for our 10 year old seemed like a no brainer. However when we went to load this pack to test comfort level for her, we could not get her compressed (adult size) sleeping bag into the sleeping bag compartment without standing it on its end which consumes the pack's capacity. Bummer! Doesnt make any sense to have a pack sized up to accomodate a 'youth' but expect them to still be sleeping in a little kids sized sleeping bag!
