Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I have had this jacket for about a year now and can say, without hesitation it is the very best rain jacket I've had- bar none. It has an athletic fit which I find great with a pack on or off. The hood will fit over a helmet and though I don't wear one, the cinches pull it snug for a perfect fit. I have worn it in downpours and dizzies on hot and cold treks and honestly forget I have it on usually. I use it as a shell when skiing or sledding or to sporting events. I love the styling and find it has exactly the right amount of pockets and are all placed just right for me. We are trekking Peru in August and this is the jacket I trust to take with me.
this is actually the second one I've had- my girlfriend cut up the first one (in a fit of rage ;) and I didn't hesitate to get another one immediately. I will be more careful in leaving this one at her place. Summary - you cannot go wrong with this great jacket. LOVE IT

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I use this jacket on my daily bike commute in Boston when it's raining, which it does all too often. I have it for a month now, and already got hammered by some downpours. The jacket performs extremely well. Perfectly waterproof, perfectly breathable - a very rare combination in my experience. Perfectly sealed pockets too, and it is long enough to cover your back. I usually wear a helmet so don't use the hood. I did use it a couple of times while walking, and the strap to clear your side vision is very handy.
Anyway, even though this is not a bike jersey, I totally recommend it for biking.
Only downside: compared to lighter weight jackets, this one is a bit bulky to stuff in a backpack.

Used the jacket to hike through Peru. It was comfortable, warm if underlayers were worn and
a good fit. Couldn't have done the trip without it!

I bought this coat to take to France in the springtime. It was wet and cold and this coat came in handy. It packed really well, is lightweight but warm and sheds water well. It is more expensive than alternatives but it seems to be worth the extra.

When I see the words basecamp, I might think that there is a level of warmth. There is none. This is a waterproof shell with breathable fabric. Its very fashionable and only a little crinkly (noise). Great for late spring summer rains. I bought an XL. I am 6/0 225. Fit nicely.

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I am currently a Peace Corps Volunteer, living at 5500 feet about 7 N degrees latitude. Although I was told it would be breathable and waterproof, I find myself sweating and the arms leak water. The temperature is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit with 70% humidity here.
The jacket travels great and is very durable. Unfortunately several times I have been caught in rain storms where my arms get wet while my body sweats.
Coming from Portland, OR, I think this jacket main function is to be stylish while walking to work in a drizzle. It is not a jacket for serious outdoor use in a warm tropical climate.

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I was looking for a true RAIN jacket- not a shell, not a packable jacket, not a coated membrane jacket (like many back packable jackets), but something that was going to keep me dry on multiple day back country fishing trips, as well as standing around all day at cyclocross races in the pouring rain, kayaking excursions in the spring drizzle, and everything in between. However, I did NOT buy this as a winter layer.
I have owned multiple "coated" rain jackets with simple water proof layer over the fabric, and while light and packable I always regret buying them as they rarely last me more than a year or two. I also have a Gortex jacket but never really liked the way it fit, although performance was good.
I was less concerned about breathability, but eVent is absolutely amazing. This is my second eVent jacket and I will never buy Gortex again. This is superior, and it's often less expensive. Win-Win. It breathes absolutely fantastically, and it never seems to lose it's weather "proofness" despite getting dirty and drifting around in the back of my car for 99% of the time.
This jacket fits great, I'm 5' 9" and got a small because I wouldn't be layering too much under it, and wanted it for warmer weather use. I can still fit a wool vest or light polar fleece if I need to- sufficient to wear in the 30's I'm sure.
The fabric (eVent) seems to be super tough and resistant to cuts and rips, especially pulls from branches and brush. It's a seriously tough jacket.
The hood is HUGE because it's made to go over a helmet. That's fine I guess, but how many people buying this jacket are buying it for that purpose? I bet the majority don't climb. You can tighten the hood up so that it fits a normal head but it does decrease visibility somewhat. Still, it's perfectly functional. And with a cap on, it works even better.
The pockets are a little strange too. I understand them being in the front for climbing and if you have a pack on...but the breast pockets are tall, but small- I can't even fit my wallet in them. A medium size multitool, small flashlight, or something similar is about all that will fit in each. The lower pockets are somewhat bigger but still tall, not wide, making them a bit awkward at times. Again, purpose built, I just wish they were a bit more multi-functional.
Otherwise, very very happy with the deal on got on the jacket on clearance. It's got the most important things down pat- super waterproof, very tough, and breathable.

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I find this jacket to be very comfortable. I wanted an three season jacket to hike with my kids or play in the backyard; no matter the weather. This jacket works. I usually get hot in anything that resembles a raincoat. It breaths well. It's a little stiff. I agree with the other comments, the hood does not make sense. Also, the zipper can be tricky. Oh, and the color is both a positive and negative. I bought the blue one (not sure of what color REI calls it), but it is a royal blue. Great everyone and thing will see me.

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I am a heavy perspirator and I needed the most breathable hard shell available. The eVent fabric works like a dream. I've been on many backcountry trips in chest deep snow kicking steps and I stayed dry from my own sweat as well as the weather. The jacket has all the pockets you could use and more. The only down side is with so many pockets you will tend to fill them up! The hood works well over a helmet. The zippers are good and it zips up from the bottom which is nice if you're wearing a harness. Totally happy!

Comments about REI Shuksan Jacket with eVent Fabric - Men's:
I was looking for something fashionable, breathable and windproof. The salesperson said it was all that and a bag of chips. They were correct. I've been out twice in different temperatures and worked very well. I truly love the performance. Used in a layered scheme, it's perfect. I questioned the no arm pit vent but they were correct, it does not need it. Love it.
