Comments about All Terrain Herbal Armor Lotion Insect Repellent - 4 fl. oz.:
I went for years without using any "bug dope" because I cannot stand the oily, pore clogging, chemical smell that come with them. Further, I hated spreading toxic chemicals on me (I am an environmental toxicologist). Dealing unprotected with the insects was a better choice to me. I saw this at REI several years ago and figured I'd give it a try. It works wonderfully. I use it primarily in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Wisconsin northwoods - both places legendary for pesky mosquitoes, black flies, gnats, etc. I have had gnats swarming around my head and within literally 2-3 seconds after application, they are gone. One disclaimer, I try to avoid camping mid June - July up here because that is the worst time for both numbers of bugs and people, so I have not used this product at the worst possible time. But I have no desire to be out deep in the woods camping that time of year. Day hikes and fishing yes, camping no.
Due to the lemongrass, this product smells decent without being perfumy. I have had no problem like that of the other reviewer that said this smell was all over his gear. I do not know how much he/she put on, but I have not found this to be the case. The only "problem" is that if the insects are plentiful, you you need to apply numerous times throughout the day, but then again that may be because I am on the water paddling or fishing getting wet, or sweating. Small price to pay for an effective all-natural product. Thank you for a great product All Terrain - keep making it.

I used this on my recent Survival/Backpacking trip.
I can't stand any kind of DEET lotion or spray. The DEET smell just drives my sinuses crazy, and clogs me up for the whole day. With DEET, I don't get bugs on me, but I end up being miserable for the whole day, so it isn't worth it for me, and I often just go without.
This product has lab results that prove it works, and not only is the initial smell upon application not objectionable, but it is mild, and dissipates rather rapidly. I had no problems with this stuff, and applied it every 3 hours. It didn't bother my sinuses, and I didn't really have problems with the insects.
I will attach a video that has a part at the end where I talk about this product, and how I used it.
The video is my survival/backpacking weekend so it shows me doing some survival activities, along with some tips I learned while out in the woods, that I would like to pass on. It is long, so watch it if you wish!

I love this stuff and have been using it for years. I was in the north woods of Wisconsin this weekend and it kept the bugs away entirely. The smell is relatively pleasant and certainly beats the chemical smell of traditional bug juice.

I used this in Washinton's Pasayten Wilderness, and it worked for about 30 minutes. Then the bugs came back, landing right where I applied it, and had a nice ole' time biting me. I'm never using this stuff again, I'll go back to DEET instead.

I used this on a springtime trek in to the Cleveland National Forest. I spread it liberally on every square inch of bare skin, and I was still a bug magnet. Lots and lots of mosquito bites, many more than my fellow trekkers who put on the DEET. On top of that, 2 months later everything - my sleeping bag, backpack, stuff sacks, that came within smelling distance of the stuff still smells like it. Now when I take my gear into bear country later this summer I will be sleeping with one eye open.
Bottom line is don't bother with it. It doesn't work and it gets on EVERYTHING. Invest in some DEET and save your sanity.
