Comments about REI Flip-Top Vacuum Tumbler - 15 fl. oz:
LOVE this tumbler! I bring it to work almost everyday for a little coffee pick-me-up every now and then. Keeps my coffee hot for hours - the only (minimal) heat loss I can find is through the seal where the lid and tumbler come together.
The lid is a little hard to clean. I've had to hang onto the instructions it came with so I remember how to put it back together, but it doesn't retain any bad tastes or smells even if I haven't cleaned it in a while. And MAKE SURE to push the button to close it if you're moving with the mug - I've just had the top lid closed and accidentally tipped the mug on its side and it will spill!
One more note - it seems like it may hold a little less than 15 oz. I've poured a tall Starbucks coffee in it and its filled it all the way and the talls are supposed to be 12oz.

I believe I have very low expectations for a travel mug. I wanted one that kept my coffee hot and prevented leaks when shoved into my bag. The REI travel mug does both extremely well for a great price. My only cons are that the paint chips if you drop the mug, but personally I think it looks a little better dinged-up!

I got one of these a couple years ago to take hot drinks (usually tea) on hikes. Someone "borrowed" it. So, I bought another. It works great, keeping the contents hot into the late afternoon. I use it all the time now.

Use this on my bicycle during cold weather. If you bend a bottle cage slightly in it works well but wouldn't use it like that for mtn biking. For mtn biking or snow biking it fits very well in a Mountain Feed Bag and have had no issues with it bouncing out.

I wanted a canteen that kept my coffee warm for hours, but that I could also drink straight from, without pouring into a cup/lid. This worked wonderfully for both of those tasks. I love the forest green color as well.

This is by far the best insulated mini-thermos I've ever owned. I recently used this on two cold weather hikes. After 5 hours my coffee was look warm, but that was the coffee makers fault for not starting out that hot to begin with. But the second time, I boiled water for hot chocolate and preheated the cup with hot water. 6 hours later in mid 30s temps I had piping hot chocolate. To make it even better I made an insulated sleeve for it, taking it's insulating performance to 6+ hours. I also use it for the daily commute, enjoying a hot drink throughout the morning. All the Starbucks cups have either broken or just don't perform. And once my wife started taking it, I had to get a second. Why waiting in line to purchase another shopper commented how overpriced it is, but after waisting money on SBs cups this one is a deal.

Comments about REI Flip-Top Vacuum Tumbler - 15 fl. oz:
Full disclosure: I actually received this as a staff gift when I worked at REI back in 2010 (my departure was amicable, I just got a job in my field).
I loved this bottle, it kept stuff hot for ages (my favorite thing to use it for was to make tea at 6 or 7 am before going snowboarding so I would have a perfect hot drink for after, at about 4 pm) and it was a good size (about 12oz, and that's about how much tea or coffee I want at once).
Problems:
1) It's tricky to clean. It's a narrow opening, so you NEED a bottle brush. Also, the lid is kind of complicated. The plunger style (you push a button down to open a gap for the liquid to flow through) means there are many parts that can be removed, and lots of crevices for cream, sugar, etc to build up in. It's not impossible to clean, you just have to really take everything apart to do it.
2) It won't last forever. It lasted me over a year I think, but eventually part of the plunger assembly came apart (see photo). To the left of the white rubber grommet is where it is supposed to be permanently connected. The brown scraggly bits are the Gorilla glue (food and dishwasher safe) I used to fix it (I got several months more use out of it), but just today it broke again and the glue later flaked off.
Like I said, it was a great bottle and I am loath to retire it because it was a staff gift (they added '2010 staff' to the side). However, it just doesn't make sense to keep repairing it. It seems to me that the plunger action just puts too much force on the housing.
For replacement, I will probably pick up the vacuum bullet bottle. I have bought it for a couple friends and they all love it. It is a simpler design with fewer parts and the lid doubles as a cup.
Bottom line: Great bottle, definitely recommend if you hate unscrewing a lid every time you want a drink. But be careful, it might break... hopefully the newer models have fixed this problem!

I use this product snowhoeing, at work, riding the bus, riding my bike into work, backpacking, beginner climbing, etc. I use for everything because it works SO well. I have recommended this to other customers I see in the store looking at mug/thermoses, and bought one for my dad for Christmas for his long commutes to work in the morning. His coffee is still warm at the end of the day when he leaves his mug in the car through the day.
This is the lightest, fastest, most compact mug and therefore most people won't want it on the trail. But for the cost and size it keeps things hot for a LONG time.
It is a tad tricky to clean, but get a pipe cleaner or narrow brush and you're good. I clean mine once a week, which for the last year seems good enough.

Comments about REI Flip-Top Vacuum Tumbler - 15 fl. oz:
This tumbler is very functional and designed well; but for an all-day snowshoeing trip, it won't stay hot for the full length of the trip so you might to spend your money getting one that can stay hot longer than 6 hours (mind was only warm, not hot by this time). This tumbler is best for 1/2 day trips during the winter.

Comments about REI Flip-Top Vacuum Tumbler - 15 fl. oz:
This mug is great - keeps coffee hot all day, and as long as you remember to push the button to close it, it doesn't spill at all.
My only problem with it is how unstable it is, even though I've added an elastic strap and clip. I drop it all the time - the flip top shatters (I keep gluing it back together), and now that it's landed on its bottom a few times that's misshapen as well, leading to more instability.
I agree with other reviewers that a shorter, more stable design would be preferable.
