Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I've owned this type of filtration system since they first emerged as the X-Stream Bottle (before Katadyn bought the them out). This filter is NOT a substitute for either a pump or hanging-bag filtration system. Using it as your ONLY filtration system on a backpacking trip is a mistake. This filter bottle is meant to be a quick and easy way to filter water on-the-fly as you get to streams or pools of water along the trail. It allows you scoop up some water and keep walking without having to stop and unpack your larger filtration system. It is not designed to filter all of your water for washing dishes, cooking, etc. (Using it to filter all of your water needs will only get you cranky, strain your hand muscles and clog the filter). Besides backpacking, I also throw it in my luggage when I travel overseas. I went to China once and used it to filter my water for drinking and brushing my teeth. I was the only person in my entire group that did not fall ill!

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I bought the Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier for an ultralight backpacking hike on the Colorado Trail because it looked like a simple, foolproof and lightweight way to keep myself hydrated. The system filtered well - I didn't get sick after three days of drinking from streams, rivers and pools of water. But though it does its job well it was too slow for a backpacker trying to trek many miles in a hot environment. The system requires both sucking and squeezing of the filter bottle to drink. This made the average time to drink 24 oz of water exceed 6-8 minutes. This seems acceptable at first but after filling several 1 Liter bottles and trying to drink several bottles of water at each stop the system eats up time and exhausts the user. I do not recommend this system for long trips because it impacts your schedule and your hydration because the harder the system is to drink, the less you hydrate. The system also imparts a strong iodine taste to the water which seemed to decrease with time. It probably is great for a casual walk or foreign travel when you aren't trying to hydrate while on-the-move.

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
This is a great product for the right uses. I received this as a gift but was put off by how slow the stream is and didn't think it would be useful for backpacking. That is correct; bring a pump filter for backpacking. The best use I found is international travel. Because it filters viruses and protozoa in addition to bacteria it's a great way to create drinkable water in places where you can't count on clean drinking water. My husband and I have used it on several trips to Mexico and two weeks through Vietnam and have never gotten sick. It's great on that first night when you arrive exhausted and can't buy filtered water and to supplement at other times. We use it a lot in the evenings for brushing teeth, etc and supplement with bottled water during the day. If I'm not sure about the water supply I just put it in my daypack so I could use it at any water source. It would also work well for day hikes, but I just usually bring enough water with me.

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I use this bottle for day hikes in the Sawtooth Mtns of Idaho. I have been able to reduce the water weight of my pack by filling the Katadyn MyBottle up in Mtn springs and creeks. I have also used it to refill the water bladder in my pack with filered water. It does require some effort to draw water through the filter, but works much better than other productls I have tried. I have used this product several times with the filter and have not even come close to getting crypto or giardia. The interal counter is very helpful in keeping track of how much questionable water has gone through the filter. Very important when trying to decide if you need to spend the extra cash on a new one or another toy!

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I bought this to make sure that I would not get sick from a bad water source. Yes it does take a little effort to drink from, but I don't get what the fuss is about how long it takes to drink a full bottle. I am hydrating myself as I hike and also when I stop to rest for a few minutes. It is easy to just squeeze and suck every once in awhile as your moving. I don't wait for a rest stop to completely re-hydrate myself. I find that by doing it this way I am more refreshed and have never felt dehydrated while hiking in hot weather. You don't need to drink a full 24oz. of water at one setting to keep yourself hydrated. If you do then in my opinion you have gone to long without water in the first place.
I hike and backpack with two other people and I was the first one to buy this filter/purifier and now my buddies have bought their own.
Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I just opened mine today and the first thing the manual says is, "Intended only for short-term, limited or emergency use (not intended for long-term use)." What qualifies as short-term or long-term use? If I use this for a month, will it mess up my thyroid? I strongly feel that REI's website should have mentioned this. (It is also not mentioned on Katadyn's website.) Now I have to think seriously about returning it and continuing to buy bottled water when I travel to developing countries. I gave it three stars because a rating is required, but I literally have just taken it out of the box.

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I used my Katadyn MyBottle for the first time today and I was very pleased. I went on the Oneonta/Franklin Ridge/ Multnomah Falls Loop, which is dry between Oneonta and Multnomah Creeks, at least this year. Instead of hoarding a limited water supply, I was able to drink when I wanted and stay well hydrated by filling up at natural water courses. For a day hike, it is perfect. You will need an alternative water treatment system in camp, but for just chugging up the trail, this is excellent. You do have to suck the straw and squeeze the bottle to operate it but that seemed like a small price to me. Today I drank much more water than I normally carry, or would care to carry. So I'm very happy!!

This is a great bottle. Although I listed its flowage rate as slow, it is not necessarily a con. It just filters slowly, but at a steady rate.

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
I used this for the first time recently on a long weekend hike in the Yosemite backcountry. I should have brought another filter, because this just took way too long to sip from. I found myself dehydrated throughout the trip as a result. Of course, I could have spent an hour drinking/sipping water from this thing three or four times a day, but I didn't. I would not recommend the product, although it was effective in filtering the water, and I caught up on my hydration needs at night.

Comments about Katadyn MyBottle Water Purifier:
Great idea, however: the water taste horrible and it's hard to suck the water out. It's a better idea to pick up a Nalgene and a Steripen, weighs about the same and it's much more efficient.
The idea was genius, but the suction and flow needs work. Also the capacity of water it holds could be increased.
