Rated 5 out of 5 by from The GSI Ketalist Cookset I first layed eyes on the GSI Ketalist Cookset, on a Buscraft site, originated in man in Africa, Adminitrated by folks inAfrica, Canada, the United States, (snd other various places through out the world). I instantly fell for the Ketalists looks, and inquired the others on the site, then went to REI (on-line. The next minute, I was on my way to REI in Olympia, WA., and was soon the joyous owner of the Ketalist kit....Impressed, to say the least! This GSI Ketalist Cooking Kit, fills all my needs, as for long, light weight travel in the forests around the Pacific N.W.. The weather here can change rapidly, and being able to cook food,or just boil water in a few minutes, is a very important consideration, and with the Ketalist, this is not a problem, due to the anodized aluminum construction, which allows rapid, even heating of the contents within the kettle. I endorse the Halulite Ketalist Cooking Set so much, I have purchased five so far, as to send them as gifts to folks as far away as New Zealand, and all have great reviews, and their respective Ketalist Kits have now become a staple, within their backpacks. We now have what we named, "The Ketalist Club", and every couple of months, one is gifted with one, and this little kettle has enriched a number of our members lives in the field. Now, when I sit back and think on it....Six individuals, on four different continents, and ALL not only think highly of this wonderfully compact kit, it has become a centerpiece of their gear, as is mine. I, as they, have used open fires, Esbit Stoves, Alcohol Stoves of various brands to heat their water, or cook foods, and this durable, easy to clean, light weight Kit is simply a functional piece of art. Don't take my word for it, just go purchase your own, and be very happy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's so cute, I want to die! This thing is sweet. I bought it in conjunction with a Biolite stove, and the combination couldn't be better The Kettle fits perfectly with the stove. Yes, you can't put the kettle on a roaring fire with the handle in the down position, or the rubber will melt. You also can't put the plastic spork in the fire. You also shouldn't run with scissors. It's common sense, really. The handle on my kettle stayed perfectly locked in the upright position. On top of the stove, the kettle was very stable, and looked awesome to boot. The colors matched perfectly. Water boiled quickly. The cup has measurements to make it easy to put the right amount of water in your kettle, and the spout poured into my dehydrated food pouches easily. The only problem is if you fill the kettle to it's 1 L limit, you'll probably lose some water as it boils. Not a huge deal, unless you boil 1 L a lot. If you do, I'd get a bigger pot. Keep in mind, the lid doesn't fit snugly. Be careful emptying the water from the kettle; you've got to keep a finger on the lid so it doesn't fall off. Fortunately there's a bit of heat resistant coating on the lid handle as well so you don't get burnt. All in all, I enjoyed this setup. I think the mesh bag may not stand up well, as the edges of the kettle handle may rip it. But otherwise, it was a great set. Oh, and I didn't even bother with the spork. It just looked silly, when so many other awesome alternatives exist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Cookset This cookset is really great. The thin aluminum of the tea kettle is not only light, but extremely efficient due to its ability to conduct heat from the stove to the water in the kettle. The relatively large diameter of the bottom of the tea kettle also adds to its efficiency. Price is extremely good, especially when compared to titanium products that don't weigh much less than this aluminum product. I use this cookset for 1-2 people. When there are two of us, one of us uses the bowl for hot drinks while the other uses the mug. We don't actually cook food, but just boil water for drinks and hydrating freeze-dried meals and freezer-bag meals. The telescoping foon isn't great, but who cares. I use a folding titanium spork which I prefer. I have had this set for 3 years and have used it backpacking and car camping for 3+ months. There are a few minor dings in the kettle which don't affect its performance. I use this cookset with a Clikstand stove/pot stand and a Trangia alcohol burner. The Clikstand, Trangia and lighter all fit into the cookset for a compact set. This cookset works great with alcohol stoves because the kettle is thin and large diameter which makes the stove more efficient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart design makes for quick boil! Recently went backpacking in the Eagle Cap Wilderness with a micro gas/butane stove and the Ketalist. Due to windy conditions in the canyons west of Wallowa Lake, I had to use a windscreen. The smart design (the large surface area on the bottom) allows for rapid water boil--2 cups water in 3 1/2 mins at 6000ft. And I never really turned up the stove past one-and-a-half turns). You'd think I was reviewing the stove! The nifty carry case is nice, keeps it from getting dinged up alongside other equipment. It's got e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g I'd ever need in a cookset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fast water boiling! After getting tired of spilling water with my old pot, I decided to give the kettle a try. All I can say is wow, so much better than a simple pot. The wide base is nice on my canister stoves as well as my white gas as all 3 stoves have fairly wide burners. I generally fill it all the way full and it still boils so fast that I'm usually scrambling to get my food and coffee lined up and ready. My wife and four kids usually go with me resulting in our taking 2 different stove and pot set ups so that we have backup systems. My son takes his Jetboil Sol and this pot used with my canister is just as fast or faster. Very light and the carry bag is nice. I like the nesting system for the bowl and cup but with my family we have to take a bunch of extras anyway. If all or mostly all you do is boil water, this is perfect. That said, the opening is wide enough for some simple cooking and cleaning is very easy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip the cookset; buy just the kettle. The kettle itself is a great revival of the one REI carried decades ago. It's compact, well-shaped (wide & flat) to pick up heat from an MSR or similar stove, and stable. The lid holds in heat well and the insulation on the handles is good enough that you don't need potholders or gloves. The rest of the set is, IMHO, useless. The plastic bowl/cup set isn't really worth the weight, and the neoprene sleeve for them adds a distinct eu-de-wetsuit flavor to the entire set. The collapsible spork is useless and hard to clean. Take along a cup and a spoon instead. The kettle is available by itself, and I'd pick that option if I had it to do over. Oh, and most of us don't really need the umpteen-page "user manual" packed with legal boilerplate warning us, among other things, that "kettle may become hot if used to boil water."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best kettle out there This is definitly the best lightweight kettle out there and easy to clean, however is does have some flaws. The plastc surrounding the handle of the cover and the handle to the pot does melt in open flames. Although, for those who are new to camping it would not be obvious as the person I was with did not know that. So treat it like you would a pot or pan in an open flame place a gridlle underneath, cast iron better. The kettle does not come with the spout cover that makes a regular kettle whistle to let you know that the water is done. You have to pay attention to see if vapor is coming out to know it is done, many times I have boiled the water compeletly out of the kettle. I understand why it comes without a spout cover, so that you do not disturb others late at night boiling water with the annoying whistle, however, that also means the water takes longer to boil. If GSI found a way to not make such an annoying whistle so that it can cook faster and let you know the water is boiling I would give it 5 stars. And, yes get the combo kettle and cup. The cup is great! It is really two cups one bigger than the other, so it is stacked: bigger cup, insulation piece, smaller cup with cover. They can be both used as a bowl or mug, but the cover only fits on the smaller one and so does the insulation so it all depends what you want to keep hot and what you want to keep cold that determines which you are going ot use for food and which for liquids. Do not store food or liquids in either dish or mug for it will leak if your store it with food and packit in your bag, it is more for use at basecamp or to pack with you as utensils to use after you have cooked on trail. The Spork is great and sturdy as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Disappointment This looked like a nice design and my Mini-Trangia fit in it ok (I can also get a Clik-Stand in it, if I prefer). However, on a recent trip I left it for a couple of minutes to boil, and came back and found the orange handle charred black. (See picture below.) The handle does not "stand up" (I guess you can take it off easily and bend it so it might stand up better), and anyway, even if it did, this is just a dumb material to use to cover a kettle handle. Other than that, the design seems kind of flawed, if you put water up to near the pour spout, it comes boiling out when it boils. OK, that's kind of a minor thing (just use less water), but still, it was annoying. And of course, the "spork" broke in five minutes. The rest of the kit I don't use, I bought it for the kettle. I won't buy another one.
