Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

I first layed eyes on the GSI Ketalist Cookset, on a Buscraft site, originated in man in Africa, Adminitrated by folks inAfrica, Canada, the United States, (snd other various places through out the world). I instantly fell for the Ketalists looks, and inquired the others on the site, then went to REI (on-line. The next minute, I was on my way to REI in Olympia, WA., and was soon the joyous owner of the Ketalist kit....Impressed, to say the least! This GSI Ketalist Cooking Kit, fills all my needs, as for long, light weight travel in the forests around the Pacific N.W.. The weather here can change rapidly, and being able to cook food,or just boil water in a few minutes, is a very important consideration, and with the Ketalist, this is not a problem, due to the anodized aluminum construction, which allows rapid, even heating of the contents within the kettle.
I endorse the Halulite Ketalist Cooking Set so much, I have purchased five so far, as to send them as gifts to folks as far away as New Zealand, and all have great reviews, and their respective Ketalist Kits have now become a staple, within their backpacks. We now have what we named, "The Ketalist Club", and every couple of months, one is gifted with one, and this little kettle has enriched a number of our members lives in the field.
Now, when I sit back and think on it....Six individuals, on four different continents, and ALL not only think highly of this wonderfully compact kit, it has become a centerpiece of their gear, as is mine. I, as they, have used open fires, Esbit Stoves, Alcohol Stoves of various brands to heat their water, or cook foods, and this durable, easy to clean, light weight Kit is simply a functional piece of art. Don't take my word for it, just go purchase your own, and be very happy!

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

This is definitly the best lightweight kettle out there and easy to clean, however is does have some flaws. The plastc surrounding the handle of the cover and the handle to the pot does melt in open flames. Although, for those who are new to camping it would not be obvious as the person I was with did not know that. So treat it like you would a pot or pan in an open flame place a gridlle underneath, cast iron better. The kettle does not come with the spout cover that makes a regular kettle whistle to let you know that the water is done. You have to pay attention to see if vapor is coming out to know it is done, many times I have boiled the water compeletly out of the kettle. I understand why it comes without a spout cover, so that you do not disturb others late at night boiling water with the annoying whistle, however, that also means the water takes longer to boil. If GSI found a way to not make such an annoying whistle so that it can cook faster and let you know the water is boiling I would give it 5 stars. And, yes get the combo kettle and cup. The cup is great! It is really two cups one bigger than the other, so it is stacked: bigger cup, insulation piece, smaller cup with cover. They can be both used as a bowl or mug, but the cover only fits on the smaller one and so does the insulation so it all depends what you want to keep hot and what you want to keep cold that determines which you are going ot use for food and which for liquids. Do not store food or liquids in either dish or mug for it will leak if your store it with food and packit in your bag, it is more for use at basecamp or to pack with you as utensils to use after you have cooked on trail. The Spork is great and sturdy as well.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

After getting tired of spilling water with my old pot, I decided to give the kettle a try. All I can say is wow, so much better than a simple pot. The wide base is nice on my canister stoves as well as my white gas as all 3 stoves have fairly wide burners. I generally fill it all the way full and it still boils so fast that I'm usually scrambling to get my food and coffee lined up and ready.

My wife and four kids usually go with me resulting in our taking 2 different stove and pot set ups so that we have backup systems. My son takes his Jetboil Sol and this pot used with my canister is just as fast or faster.

Very light and the carry bag is nice. I like the nesting system for the bowl and cup but with my family we have to take a bunch of extras anyway.

If all or mostly all you do is boil water, this is perfect. That said, the opening is wide enough for some simple cooking and cleaning is very easy.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

This cookset is really great. The thin aluminum of the tea kettle is not only light, but extremely efficient due to its ability to conduct heat from the stove to the water in the kettle. The relatively large diameter of the bottom of the tea kettle also adds to its efficiency. Price is extremely good, especially when compared to titanium products that don't weigh much less than this aluminum product.

I use this cookset for 1-2 people. When there are two of us, one of us uses the bowl for hot drinks while the other uses the mug. We don't actually cook food, but just boil water for drinks and hydrating freeze-dried meals and freezer-bag meals.

The telescoping foon isn't great, but who cares. I use a folding titanium spork which I prefer.

I have had this set for 3 years and have used it backpacking and car camping for 3+ months. There are a few minor dings in the kettle which don't affect its performance.

I use this cookset with a Clikstand stove/pot stand and a Trangia alcohol burner. The Clikstand, Trangia and lighter all fit into the cookset for a compact set. This cookset works great with alcohol stoves because the kettle is thin and large diameter which makes the stove more efficient.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

I first saw this product while backpacking with a friend, and it seemed to work pretty well for him. Well, during a failed attempt at hanging the bear bag, the whole bag (15 Lb?) fell about 15 feet. It seemed like there was a very hard metal object (not part of the teapot/set)that cut through some of the food bags, and ended up nailing the teapot. The teapot had a gnarly dent but was fine, the measuring bowl was fine, but the other bowl got a small crack in it. But honestly who needs 2 bowls anyways. He loaned it to me for a weekend recently, and it worked awesome with my fancy feast can stove. The flames did burn the plastic on the handle a little bit, that and the dent gives it a lot of character while still working just fine. Stove fits inside teapot/bowl too. Pretty much the only thing I will use from now on.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

Read the other reviews and felt positive so I decided to try it for multi-day packing into remote walls and towers. I will return this set, unused. First of all, the concept is awesome. You get a nice sized, stable kettle to heat your water in for dry pack meals and warm drinks, and then, well, that's it. Call me crazy, but who in their right mind wants flimsy handle-less plastic cups with a grime-magnet foam sleave while in a wilderness? My heart sank when I realized BOTH the cups were non metal. Also, it took about 5 seconds for the spoon to come apart and I nearly lost the tiny rubber grommet that holds it together. If GSI fixed these things I would never need another cooking anything for backpacking. Until then, avoid this brand. I'll return to the basic 3 piece (small cup, large cup, lid) solos, i.e. Ti ware, or Snow Peak.

Comments about GSI Outdoors Halulite Ketalist Cookset:

I use this kettle set every trip. It seemed a little over kill at first because there is no reason you cant just boil water in your pot for a drink, however I never end up not using this thing. I find having a nice hot drink outside to be really refreshing and fun, and having this little kettle along is really really worth it. I suppose if you wanted you could just roll with the kettle alone which was not available all by its self when I first purchased mine, but I find my self using all of the kit every trip. It is a bit bulky so it might be less favorable for ultraminimalists who would rather have a snow peak or beer can pot, but I have heard of people carrying just this for their boil meals and water sanitation. If you like roll heavy and you cut on weight in other places, this kettle makes a nice addition to your pack, and to me worth the weight of having something that boils water well besides your potentially grimy pot. Thinking of a stainless one for my bug out kit.
