Pearl Izumi has combined an airy sport sandal upper with the award-winning X-Alp bottom to produce the Drift, a women's summer biking shoe for use in or out of the pedals.

Women-specific design takes into account women's foot dimensions and pedal stroke to optimize comfort
Stiff nylon plates provide toe spring, flexibility and rigidity for pedaling while enhancing off-the-bike comfort

I love my PI road shoes, but find them too slick to walk in on long trips if we need to walk our bikes to detour around constrction or a closed section of trail. I got these for week-long trips, to wear into restaurants, etc. and was very pleased with their comfort, performance and ventilation to keep my feet cool in hot weather. I had to return the first pair and order a size larger than my road shoes, appreciate the PI and REI return policy. I've also worn them on road rides for charity on rainy days as I have better balance and they are not slippery if I have to stop for traffic, etc. on a hill or when the streets are slick. I wore them daily, all day for 4 days first trip out and they were comfortable, no break in time required.

I wore these 3 times and each time my toes went numb. I bought a half size larger than I normally wear and the shoes were still too small. I can't get a larger size since I had bought the largest available.

These are very uncomfortable shoes and I'm not sure why exactly. For one thing the velcro straps are made of a very thick plastic that does not fold over well. You end up with a bulge that digs into your foot where the strap folds to velcro. I'm not sure if in time the plastic would soften but that was my experience after the first wearing. My toes also felt cramped but maybe I need to go up a size.
