Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I bought this hat so I would have something to take to Crete and Greece. It packed really well and has so far held it's shape. I liked the pack-away sun cape for hot sunny days tromping around in sunny ruins.

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I have wore the hat in mid day sun many times. Great for sun shade and my head did not feel hot.Downer is the hat comes in S/M or L/XL, the S/M was too tight, went with the L/XL which is too big, but I can live with it.

Perfect for travel with folding flat for packing. Love being able to fold the "neck cape" up into the brim when not needed.

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
This hat kept my head cool and dry on a full-day Class III-IV rafting trip in direct sun and 89 degrees F temperature. The cape protected my neck from burning without making me too hot. The cord prevented the hat from flying away in windy gusts and was comfortable around my chin. Although the hat isn't waterproof, it dried very quickly after multiple splashes from rapids and other paddlers. I'm very happy with this hat!

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I used this hat in 20-25 mph winds in 90ºF weather. It held its shape and protected from the sun. The headband kept sweat out of my eyes and did not overheat my head. I would recommend this for anyone that might deal with the same such elements.

Very functional sun hat, great for travel or carrying in your pack or luggage.
I loaned it to a friend and he wouldn't return it and had to buy another one!

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
Got this product[...] just before departing to intense sun in tropics (Galapagos, Amazon Basin). Shape, wide brim, chin strap vs. winds, breathability, and fast drying fabric are all pluses. The hat does not come in a light color... both of the available colors are mid-tones, making it a definite solar gainer. In designing a sun hat, a light color that does not heat up is too important to ignore!!! This hat's fabric got very hot as time spent in the sun ground on... I wasn't quite hallucinating up old French Foreign Legion films, but hey, didn't anyone in the design dept. study physics? This otherwise excellent hat should be available in both white and a buff or a very light tan so as not to be such a solar gain passive heating unit!

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I took this hat on a trip to Northern Arizona this summer. Hot, sunny, and unforgiving. This hat was fantastic. The cape kept more sun off me than the brim did alone, and yet the whole thing was amazingly comfortable, even in 100+ temps. Buying a second one, I like this so much.

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I have a small head and a small was not small enough. I thought the chinstrap would be enough of an adjustment, but unfortunately not. Would be better if there was a way to adjust it above the brim and around the head. As soon as a gust of wind came, the hat flew off my head (even with the chinstrap tightened). Works to keep the sun off my face. I haven't used the cape, but I think it could come in handy.

Comments about REI Sahara Outback Cape Hat:
I bought this hat to use while backpacking and back country camping. It works as well as this type hat should. My head didn't get too hot, and it was comfortable. The pull down and tuck away cape is nice, although I haven't used it yet... perhaps in the summer I will.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the wire in the brim kinks easily. I folded it in half and tucked it away on my pack, and when I took it back out, I had to fuss with it for a while to get the creases in the brim out.
Other than that, it is a great hat. The picture is of the hat while folded in half on my pack.
