Polar FT7 Heart Rate Monitor is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good hrm, questionable calorie counting I bought this HRM because I wanted something less bulky and quicker to operate than my Garmin 110 GPS HRM, which can take several minutes or more to get satellite reception. The Polar FT7 is a great size and looks good, very comfortable to wear. Unlike most HRMs, the Polar is small and slim enough to wear as an everyday watch and fits comfortably under a shirt sleeve. The display has good visibility and the light, while not especially bright, is more than adequate in dark conditions. Chest strap is comfortable, though I don't see any real benefit of the "smart fabric sensor" over the conventional plastic type. The calorie counter seemed to be giving me inflated numbers - stuff like 400 calories burned in a 25-minute run - so I wore the Polar along with my Garmin 110 to compare. They were more than 99% accurate to each other in terms of measured heart rate, which was encouraging. After a 1 hour jog with a 155 average HR, however, the Polar estimated 968 calories while the Garmin estimated 498. (My personal information is identical in both HRMs, for the record.) I seriously doubt I am burning 1000 calories in a 1-hour, relatively casual jog. I still like the Polar FT7 as a HRM, especially for my daily jog when I'm not as interested in analyzing the HR and GPS data afterward, but I will take the calorie burn estimate with a very large grain of salt. I would caution other people from relying on the Polar as a tool for accurate calorie-counting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not transfer data as it states While the watch does what it's suppose to do, the data transfer option is very misleading. You actually have to purchase a Polar FlowLink device which costs at least an additional $50 in order to download your workouts. I bought this watch specifically for the data transfer and was disappointed when I realized you couldn't download anything without the FlowLink. In fact, the directions tell you to type in your workouts online to track them. The Garmin FR70 does exactly what this watch does for the same price but comes with a USB to download your workouts. Once downloaded, you can easy name, categorize and measure your workouts. I'd recommend the Garmin product instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good beyond-basic HRM This is a good basic HRM that shows HR zones and time displayed. Calories burned is a nice feature. Some displays' text is a tad small but I'm used to seeing it now so not as big an issue. I like that it stores your previous events. The strap is pretty comfortable, too. I'm very happy with the FT7.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Monitor Great Monitor. Sometimes does not fully sync with Gym machines.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adequate Simpler to use than the Timex Ironman but fewer features. Appealing capability to upload data but then you have to buy a $40 accessory. That's disappointing. I bought the thing and it works OK. I use it primarily for running and biking. I like the styling except that the black face with white numbers is a bit difficult to read in many lighting conditions. I'd suggest getting white background. Chest strap is as comfortable as any chest strap I've tried. I understand that the sending unit has to be detached to keep the unit from running down the battery. Information it logs appears to be as accurate as the Timex. Useful and simple (except for needing the 'accessory' - almost made me return it... might yet.) On-line docs are adequate. Be sure you understand what it will and won't do before you buy it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not so great I bought this to replace a Polar F6, which was fantastic until it broke after four years of hard use. Unfortunately, this Polar product seemed like a step back in time as far as quality goes. The instructions tell you that you must wash the chest strap at least every five uses, in some sort of pouch. My old F6 had a hard plastic chest strap, that beyond being rinsed under cold water and maybe a little hand soap once in a while, never needed frequent washing like this FT7 in order to transmit a good quality signal. Also, it does NOT beep when you push yoursself too hard and you get above whatever training zone you are locked into. That is a major shortcoming for a heart rate monitor, if the thing does not beep when you push it too hard, you overtrain. That negates the whole purpose of a HRM. On the positive side, REI customer service was fantasic both when I bought the FT7 and when I returned the FT7. No complaints about REI on this deal, just POLAR! Polar needs to go back to basics.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will a Polar last a whole year? Nope! I just want to address a specific thing about this particular HRM. I have owned no less than seven Polar watches over the last ten years. All of them come out of the box working great. The most important feature for me is the algorithm they use to determine calories burned. Other watches like Timex and Garmin don't factor in weight and age, so I have always depended on Polar for the best numbers. The BIG problem with Polar is their reliability. Yes, there are intermittent reading failures in all watches but with this particular model that seems to be very rare. But for the seventh time in seven watches it has stopped reading the transmitter again. I have been using the FT7 almost daily for 5 months with no major problems, but just this week it doesn't read the chest strap anymore. I even changed the batteries and have always used electrode gel for the best readings. I also rinse it off after each use and keep them in very good condition. Just once I would like to own a Polar that doesn't fail in less than a year. Back it goes to REI for yet another exchange. Sigh!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good Love it so far. All the information I care about when i'm excercising. My first heart rate monitor. I was worried about it being uncomfortable but you barely notice it after a little while.
