Comments about REI Sahara Shirt - Women's:
First of all, the zippered pocket is very awkwardly placed (right at the left breast area). Pretty much making it useless. I had to size up as my arms would not fit comfortably in the arm pit area, but in a size L the arms where too long.
I wore this shirt on a short 6 mile hike on Mt. Tam on Sunday and half way through the hike I noticed that the shirt was already pilling very badly. I was quite disappointed, as REI usually has quality clothing. This is definitely going back.
I would only recommend this shirt if you don't plan on using it with a backpack of any kind.

Comments about REI Sahara Shirt - Women's:
Got this shirt because it was comfy and had adjustable sleeves and 4 zip vents. It kept me incredibly cool while backpacking through the Smokies but after the first day on the trail, it was pilling and frayed.
By the end of the week, it was falling apart beneath my pack, even though I wore it alternate days and it maybe saw 3 days on the trail under my pack. On top of it, the odor after 2 washes was still present.
I was so bummed to have to return this shirt because the design, comfort and ability to keep me dry and cool was remarkable but the material couldn't withstand the 3 days I wore it.

Comments about REI Sahara Shirt - Women's:
I wore this shirt for three days straight while on a weekend back packing trip. It protected my super-pale Irish skin from burns and was very lightweight. When it got dirty I could just run some water over it and it would be dry within an hour. Even though I was sweating, the shirt never got stinky or grimy.
The only complaint I have is that even after the first wash, the seams are a little itchy. It took some breaking in before it was really comfortable. All in all, a great buy.

Comments about REI Sahara Shirt - Women's:
This shirt performed well in India - on jeep and boat safari, in urban areas and on the plane as a layer to keep warm. I pre-treated it at home with Sawyer's Permethrin Spray to repel mosquitoes, and even in the pre-monsoon heat (+34C/95F), with the side-zips open it was surprisingly comfortable. I found the sleeves didn't roll up loosely like in the photos, but I'm a petite and my arms are not very thin. A longer slash in the sleeve cuff would help.
The hidden zip pocket was useful for carrying my spare camera battery, and for my credit card or extra cash.
I got the greystone color to hide dirt and because white is associated with death in India. The shirt handwashed easily in the sink using a little shampoo. Wrung dry and hung under a fan, it dried in a couple of hours.

Comments about REI Sahara Shirt - Women's:
I really don't understand what all the bad reviews are about. I have used this shirt for two FULL field work seasons, in which these shirts (I have two) have undergone heavy and very rough use for long days for 6 months in very hot, thorny areas of Western Africa. The fabric started to pill only after several months of wear, withstands sharp thorns (no holes yet!), and isn't too hot (all the zippers on the sides are nice), despite the 110+F degree heat).
My only complaints are that the sunscreen smell seems to remain, and that the open-able slot in the back for ventilation is a bit awkward, but not really noticeable. If they were a bit cheaper, I would definitely buy a third!

I wore this for a week of backpacking in Montana and it was perfect for that. It kept the sun off, didn't stink and just needed a quick rinse in the river at the end of the day. HOWEVER, because of the pilling, backcountry is the only place I can wear it.

I love this shirt -- I bought it for a hiking/kayaking trip in North Carolina and I've had it in the Florida Keys for three weeks now. On both trips it performed wonderfully. Even in the heat and humidity it keeps me cool and it lasts multiple wearings before it has to be washed. I have not done extended backpacking with this shirt, but I have had no problems with fraying or piling with a day pack (a real problem with the same shirt a few years ago). I also have not noticed any odor problems at all. I will be buying this shirt in a few more colors for sure.

My wife got this for our 14-day trip down the Pacific Highway and through national parks. She wore it every single day of the trip, including the plane ride out and back. We washed it in the sink each night and it was dry and ready to go the next morning, without exception. This shirt has *lots* of style and looks great with a high performance tee under it. It made the transition from cool morning to warm afternoon each day. She reported that it fit beautifully and was very comfortable for our 5-7 mile hikes each day. I can report that she looked great in it and it is a wonderful blend of functionality and style.

I bought these for sun protection - I tend to get heat rashes and am prone to overheating in the NM summertime. I wore this shirt (I have 2) for 4 days at a horse show, out all day in 98-degree weather/sun. They protected me from sunburn, overheating, and biting flies and mosquitoes (with sleeves rolled down, anyway). I was actually much cooler in these than on the last day, when I wore a CoolMax short-sleeve T-shirt.
Also, I love that they look much nicer than ordinary T-shirts; I could wear one for a clinic with a top rider, and not feel underdressed.
I see that reviews from 2010 note a lot of fabric pilling - I've only had them a few weeks, but they've been worn almost constantly, and have been through the wash at least twice, and haven't had that problem. Maybe REI updated the fabric since then. Wrinkles, yes, but not horrible, and not a big deal for what I'm doing (messing about at the barn). They come clean and stains and odors wash right out.
The sleeves when rolled are a bit tight - but I do have muscular arms, so that may just be me. And yes, the chest pocket is stupidly placed and rather useless for anything other than a map, maybe. Otherwise, I adore these shirts, and am ordering several more. I've never been so protected from the harsh desert sun.

I really like this shirt. I bought mine summer 2011 and I haven't had a problem with pilling. Maybe the fabric was changed between 2010 and 2011? I hope so. I wore this shirt camping in Alaska and it protected me from mosquitoes and sunburn. I bought white and, surprisingly, it didn't get that dirty. I'm going to buy one for my mom for her to garden in. I often used the extra flap on the back of the collar for extra sun protection. I'm going on a trip to India and will buy another before I leave. The chest pocket works fine if you use this an over-shirt, worn open. It does wrinkle a bit for travel clothing but I still like it.
