Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
This new design should not be confused with REI's original Sahara Shorts, which remains a superior product. This version is redesigned, but for the worse. For example, the once enclosed belt system is now replaced with a removable web belt. The waist can no longer be cinched evenly as before. Thinner belt tabs bunch up when tightened and mess the fit. As it stands, you may even want to discard this belt outright and provide a better substitute on your own. Also the belt buckle is now a push-pull tab instead of the much better Delrin clip version found on the older styles of these shorts. And pocket designs have changed too. Gone is the zippered right side cargo pocket. It's just Velcro tabs now. The wallet pocket gets the zipper instead...meh. The once hidden accessory pocket (inside left cargo pocket) has now been moved to the outside. I think these design changes reduce the fit and utility of these shorts significantly, especially when compared to earlier versions of the Sahara Shorts (which are awesome). REI is an excellent company with superb products so I hope they recognize the design issues on these shorts and go back to producing the original version, which is was so much better.

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
I've hiked with the previous version of these for years, and love them. Unfortunately every change in the new version is for the worse. These long-legged "clown shorts" are no longer fit for the trail. What gives? I thought REI would be smart enough to have actual hikers approve changes, and to leave popular items ALONE! RIP Sahara Shorts (sigh)

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
These Hiking shorts are really nice, but there is one problem. The inseam has been increased from 8 1/2 inches,(2009) to 9 1/2 inches. Which might be fine for basketball, but for hiking, I like the 2009 version. Trying a pair on, I looked as though I had Capris on.

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
I have many pairs of the previous version of the Sahara Short, but won't be buying any of these. I use them for hiking, and hiking shorts shouldn't have such long legs. I don't care for the changes to the pockets either. Please change back!

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
I read some reviews that were not complimentary about the redesign, but I figured that was just a generic response to any change to a favorite. I was wrong. I purchased a pair from REI.com in 7/10 and I wish I'd paid more heed to the warnings.
I've got a pair of REI Sahara shorts (and convertibles) from the last design. I like the fit and comfort, but was always wishing the front pockets were deeper. That's been fixed but the changes to the cargo pockets and belt have pretty well ruined these shorts.
The old cargo pockets would hold the load against my thigh; for the 2010 version, the legs are longer and the cargo pockets are lower and swing against the side and back of my knee. The lack of the LH inner accessory pocket is also disappointing -- it was just the right size for my cell. W/O that, my cell sits at the bottom of the pocket and (you guessed it!) bangs into the side and back of my knee.
The new 2010 belt-loop design is good if you want to use your own belt, but the old design (where the belt was mostly inside the waistband) was more comfortable. After about three miles on the trail with my new 2010 shorts, they were sagging and the belt was peeking over the top of the waistband and digging into my hips.
On the upside, the addition of the hanging loop is a bonus. And I really like the deeper front pockets. I think these will be decent casual shorts, but they're not really suitable for the trail.

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
I have five pairs of the older model of this short and they are amazing. Probably the best shorts I have ever owned. I went to get some more when I had worn out some of them and they had a new model. I thought surely this will only be better. I was very wrong the new design is horrible. They are too long, don't tighten well with new belt, no hidden pocket(best feature in older model), and no zipper on cargo pocket. I was very disappointed and will never buy another pair until they return to the older model.

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
The old version was a great pair of shorts. This redesigned version is awful, for several reasons: 1 - The zipper is cheap and flimsy, much too small and frail for rugged shorts. 2 - The new version has a longer inseam. The designer was clearly influenced by basketball shorts and the ghetto clothing trend. The inseam is too long for hiking and multi-purpose shorts. 3 - The old version had a sturdy, practical belt. This new version is cheap and the buckle doesn't hold nearly as well. BRING BACK THE OLD VERSION!

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
I would like to echo the sentiments of the previous reviewers regarding the size increase. The previous version were the perfect pair with the fit being just right. This new version makes me look more like a rapper than a hiker.

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
The redesigned belt makes the fit on these shorts awful. It easily comes undone, and it awkward on the exterior instead of being integrated into the waist like pas years. I am appealing to the buyer/designer for REI, PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD SHORTS!

Comments about REI Sahara Cargo Shorts - Men's:
The quality of the product is adequate but the design is inferior. The idea of making the belt removable from the short was a mistake. First of all it is constantly coming unbuckled and tends to slide about in the provided loops. The previous design of the Sahara short was far superior and should be reintroduced.
