I use this mug constantly and it's been great. At home I fill it with coffee daily and throw it in a motorcycle sidebag. It never leaks. I occasionally use the infuser for coffee and it works fine, though fine coffee particles will get through - But that's reasonable. Right now I'm in Iraq and it takes a beating in HMMWV's and such, but still going strong with just some dents. Back in the real world, the only thing it doesn't do well is cars. It's too skinny for cup holders and you need two hands to uncap it. But what it's meant for it does great.

This mug is great if used appropriately. Reading through the collection of reviews, I think I can bridge the gap between the positive and negative. I use the mug everyday on my commute to work - I brew at home, throw the mug in my backpack and have hot coffee when I arrive at the office an hour later. The mug has never leaked on me during car, train or walking adventures. HOWEVER - it will leak if you fill it over the line/shoulder on the inside. I don't think this was detailed in the instructions and I only discovered this 'feature' as I overfilled it one day and found that the slightest tip was causing coffe to leak out underneath the cap...fortunately I found out before I put it in my backpack. I poured out enough to get the level below the shoulder and voila - not more leakage! So - a 5 star product as long as you do not overfill it.

I had the smaller older style of this mug (~12 oz?), and I LOVED it for years until it was lost or grew legs. It never leaked, ever, and I would confidently throw it in my work bag and forget about it, knowing it wouldn't leak.
I just got the new, "Improved" version in the now larger size after the mug having not been available through REI for quite some time, and the new lid design is bad. The threads on the inside of the container don't extend far enough to allow the inner (sipping) portion of the lid to securely lock into the mug body, and it constantly comes unscrewed. It leaks consistently just drinking, let alone throwing it into a bag like you would a thermos, and will be returned, if I can, since it was a gift. It may just be the one that I received, and I hope so, but this lid thread issue appears to be a serious design flaw. The positive - It keeps things seriously burning hot, for many hours if sealed, and I like the larger size of this mug, it fits better into most car cup holders than the older version( it's now about the exact diameter of a can of soda), and the new infuser with the locking design is better than the screen in the old one.

I want to love this product. It is slim, so it fits in my tote bag to take to work, it keeps my coffee warm well into the afternoon, and I've never had a problem with it leaking.
Now for the big con: I have been through two of these mugs and BOTH times the lid has broken. By "lid," I mean the part that you drink out of. By "broken," I mean that the lid broke into two pieces, the top part that you drink from and the rings that screw into the stainless steel portion of the mug. These two parts of the lid are just glued together. In all fairness, my brother has had his mug for some time now and had no problems, but I'm no muscle woman, so I'm going to say that this is a design defect. Glue is not enough!
I'm going to return the mug to my local REI and probably will get another one because I really do love the mug, but please, PLEASE find a way to make the lid more solid. Then I'll love it even more!

I had the old version of this mug that I purchased 2 years ago and it was the perfect mug until it broke about a month ago. REI stopped producing the mug for a while so I was looking for a substitute when I looked at the REI site again and saw they came out with a new and improved version. The part that broke on my old mug has been redesigned and will not break on the new style. Also they increased the capacity by 3oz which is a plus. This mug will not spill when the lids are tight and will keep hot liquids HOT for 4-5 hours and drinkable for up to 8. I do not think twice about putting this full mug in a bag full of electronics and going about my business. If you are thinking about getting something like this mug buy this one and if you are dissapointed REI will always take it back, it is a win win.

I have been searching for the perfect travel mug since I lost one I got on the outlet a few years ago (I haven't seen it sold anywhere since then). I thought this was the one because those screw on tops usually keep things super hot and don't leak. This does keep coffee hot for hours (it's kind of amazing) but it leaks really badly no matter how hard I turn the lid on. I'm very jealous of the folks who wrote reviews above who have not had this problem because it is really frustrating. I really wanted to be able to put it in a bag to bring to school every day, especially when I'm biking, but I have to wrap it in plastic if I do and it is still messy. I really expected more from a [$] mug and would return it, but I bought it while home over Christmas and now I'm back at my job in Mexico.

I've spent years and countless dollars looking for a ideal mug. Many have been okay, but they aren't very well insulated and it's probably less then an hour before the coffee is cold. Since I bring my coffee from home to work, this presented a problem. I was hesistant to spend [$] on yet another mug, but I'm glad I did. This mug keeps coffee or tea, hot for hours. The built in filter is great, you can just add coffee grounds and go and just add hot water and you have coffee. Making it great for camping or other uses. It's very durable, because I've dropped it on the ground and it sustains no damage. It seals very well, sometimes I'll take it home in my bag and not remember it still has liquid in it and it has never leaked. The only issue I can find is if you fill the mug to full with waters, sometimes the grounds can get through the filter. However this only happens, if the mug is too full. It's great mug, and worth the price.

Primarily I use this for taking coffee from home to work, or where ever else I may be going. But I also use it now when I'm not going anywhere in lieu of a mug, when I want to drink slowly and keep heat in. The insulation is excellent.
The relatively narrow form factor means it fits very well into the side pockets of any of my bags, as well as in pretty much any cup holder.
I see quite a few comments about leaking; but this has not been my experience. It seals well for me, and I'm comfortable to throw it in a pack with other stuff.
If I lost it, I'd buy another for sure.
My only real complaint is that the "filter" part gets discolored pretty quick, and is a real pain to clean. However, the filter comes off and I usually leave it off. The rest of the mug isn't any harder to clean than every other similar mug I've owned.

My wife got this for me as a Christmas gift along with the REI Table Top French Coffee Press. The mug is incredible. I'm going to beat the dead horse from the other reviews: it is incredible at retaining heat for a long period of time (at least an hour so far). And I don't mean that it stays luke warm for that long. I mean my coffee is maybe 1-2 degrees cooler an hour after I pour it into the mug. Warning: put your liquid in the mug at the temperature you want to drink it at because it will stay hot! The thin size means it is easily portable either during a long commute or in the side pocket of a good day pack. The only con I gave was the limited types of colors for anyone who feels the need to color-coordinate their gear (which I do not but my wife does). You can still order a few different colors online but the green was all they carried in our store. This could be due to newer colors coming out in 2012. Overall, a great buy and a great combination with the French Press.

this mug is simple & fairly easy to clean. However the seal on the allows slow leaks unless you reef on it with kung fu grip. Inspection & cleaning of seal no help. My down jacket now smells like old coffee
