- Lightweight Elements® 2.5-layer diamond ripstop nylon is waterproof, breathable and windproof to 60 mph; seams are sealed for complete protection

Looked for a long time for a new jacket to replace my old one, which was expensive. The REI Ultra light Jacket is a wonderful replacement. I have taken it on two backpacking trips since I bought it, one in a nice steady drizzle, and it performed great and I stayed dry.

I purchased on sale, in store. It seemed like a good value and the workmanship seemed solid.
On a 12 day thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail in early October, it performed very well. Kept water out, effective ventilation, good hood. I used over an appropriate level of insulation and it worked well.
Enhancement would be to drop the tail end down a little further. Also, practice with hip belts at home because the pocket mesh/lining wore out in spots right away when it was under a hip belt.
Once the integration with backpack was adjusted, I was glad I had this as a water resistant layer.

This is an awesome product. I picked it up about a year ago as a Christmas gift for myself. So far I have used it everywhere from the rolling hills of Western PA, to the high desert of Idaho, and the Redwood forest/North Cali. Coast.
This is my go-to jacket for lightweight excursions. As far as waterproofing, I can attest to its functionality, having been caught in a torrential 20 minute downpour without a drop touching my t-shirt underneath.
The windproofing is fantastic as well. I even use this, along with a couple insulation layers, for mid-winter hikes. I was subject to some gale force winds that I never felt inside this jacket.
This is a great option for a low-cost, high-performance jacket. It has exceeded my expectations.
One thing I wish was better about this jacket would be slightly longer back. Because with its current waist-length cut it tends to ride up a bit under a pack, and doesn't cover my long-backed insulation layers. Also, water proof zippers would be a nice touch.
Other than that, this is a perfect product that cost very little compared to it's functionality.

I wore this jacket during a 12 day trek in a rainy environment and it served me well. It is nice and light, yet durable. Plenty of pockets and adjustments. It also offers a decent amount of windproofing.
It is 95% waterproof, but occasionally drops would get through. For this price/weight though it is great.

The Ultra Light jacket is a fine waterproof jacket. This jacket has a nylon outside and a nice waterproof inner layer to keep the water out. Has critical pit zips to let it breathe. Used this jacket on a Talkeena tour with great success.
Cody's quote comes to mind:
"Water-resistant" and "water-proof" are two entirely different concepts. The former "breathes" to a certain extent to let body moisture escape, and the latter is a vapor barrier that, although useful in some applications, requires advanced thought and the right conditons to be used successfully.

I bought this for a waterproof shell for a 4-day trek in Iceland because of the good fit and design. It rained every afternoon for hours. First day, I noticed a damp pattern on the inside and outside where my pack straps were against the shell. The dampness got progressively worse over the following days to where the entire jacket was soaked by the last day. Once soaked, it was difficult to dry. This jacket may be suitable for light rain but is NOT suitable for prolonged rain. It's going back to REI for a refund.

This has been a great jacket that's seen a lot of varied use. I recently wore it over much of a 2 week urban trip in Europe which prompted me to pen this review. The jacket was comfortable over a wide range of temperatures and levels of precipitation. It has performed equally well in the outdoors as around town.
The pit zips really help vent the jacket and give it a wide temperature range. Mine is black, which looks as good as a rain jacket can look in a city.
One detail I really appreciate is the "height" of the pockets. I didn't notice this until I wanted to carry something tall - you can easily fit a good sized folded map, folded normally, in the pockets without it looking like you're carrying a lot.
