I've had this mug for over a year, and I use it every single day. It is solidly built and the french press works perfectly. It fits in a standard sized car cup holder. I have never owned a mug that was this well built. It's almost over-engineered. The french press is perfect for making coffeeat home or in the field, the watertight "secret compartment" in the base, which holds another cup's worth of coffee grounds, is watertight(you can even put the mug in the dishwasher with grounds in the compartment accidentially and not worry about it). Washing it requires about 4 seconds of your time each day. It's nearly indestructable and unscratchable with solid metal construction, complete with rubber cords about the mugs circumference to prevent scratches, and an extremely sturdy handle. You could drag it behind a truck, throw it out of an airplane, drive over it with a car, submerge it in 10 ft. of water, pick it up, shake out the water, pour in the grounds from the cannister inside the base, add hot water and press out a perfect cup of coffee. Don't let the price deter you- this is well worth every cent. If Bond had "Q" design him a coffee mug- this would be it.

Very well designed and made. I like that it's stainless steel on the inside also. I find the handle comfortable. The french press works great- just don't use too much coffee grounds, otherwise the coffee gets stronger as its sits. Bottom coffee storage keeps the contents dry. You could use it as a coffee maker for two. Not sure if I would take it on long backpacking trips due to its size and weight but it would be okay for overnighters or weekend trips.

I love this mug. It's solidly built, beautiful, and very functional. And it's amazing I feel this way, because my first sip from it ever burned my mouth and lips quite badly. I had poured boiling water in it to make tea, and then I placed the lid on it and let it steep. The thing is amazingly insulated, as we know, and steam pressure built up inside. As I took my first sip, a big gush of super hot liquid exploded out of the sip hole and shot into my mouth and over my lips. The pain took my breath away.
So enjoy, but use with caution when brewing tea with boiling water. In the future, I will let the tea steep with the top off for a minute, to let the steam dissipate.

I did a lot of research to find the best coffee/tea mug that I could use for loose tea and coffee using the press. I thought I'd found the perfect mug with this REI press mug. However, I was sorely disappointed. The first time I used the mug, I put hot coffee into the mug and 30 minutes later it was cold! I've had a Thermos Nissan for 3+ years and use it every single day. My coffee and/or tea is hot several hours after I put it into the mug. However, this is definitely not the case with this REI mug. The concept of the REI mug seems great, however, the execution is terrible. This is going back immediately!

Anyone who knows me knows my love for coffee. I've been through many mugs, and I have to say, this mug is my favorite. This mug outshines any Star $'s mug. The coffee tastes great out of this mug, and not to mention, it has that handy hidden compartment for your coffee beans. Many reviews say the mug is unstable and it was something that really concerned me before I order it; however, the mug is very stable when it is placed on a hard surface. The mug loses its stability if you were to put it on a soft surface like a carpet. The mug has a heavy duty handle which is the most probable reason it's a little unbalanced on soft surfaces. In my experience, finding a good mug is a difficult task, and some mugs, although very expensive, are still junk. The REI french press mug is well worth [$].

My wife needed a coffee solution for camping in our small Airstream. Taste and heat are important to her, taking up little space in a small trailer is important to me. We tried everything. From our testing, French presses make the best tasting coffee but lose heat fast. So we tried this mug. The coffee tasted as good as any french press but it excels in insulation. I'm still suffering from the burns on my tongue as I write this. Very hot and enjoyable even at the one hour mark. The filter in the press and lid keep out any bits of coffee and the handle is very comfortable. Great purchase and solved our camping coffee problems.

While the mug looks great and makes a good French press, it won't hold the heat long unless you are a coffee gulper. Also, it leaks around the lid gasket any time I put cold liquids in it.

The bottom is well designed to fit in a car drink holder, but not that stable on flat surfaces.

The mouth of this mug/press is wide and easy to clean. The screen on the press mechanism is firm and doesn't slide, as many travel models are prone to. Now that REI has changed the handle to be more stable this mug is perfect for day to day use. Brew up one cup for the morning commute, clean it out when I arrive and then access the "secret compartment" for cup number two.

I use this most often at home, where I habitually grind French roast beans very fine, because I like coffee mud-strong.
As handsome as this thing is, the press seems poorly designed. The press plunger is a very tight fit into the mug, and within the first few uses, several of the plastic fingers that seal around its edge folded back, so that it no longer seals effectively. Moreover, in most French presses, even good ones, some coffee grounds usually work their way over the plunger/filter, and in this one, they quickly seal the very finely filtered drinking aperture, so you can't even drink from it. Humbug. So, I use another French press to make coffee, and pour it into this mug to drink.
It's a good insulated mug, although the normal mug top has no plug for the drinking hole, so your beverage will slosh out if it's tipped. REI will probably get it right next time; they're good at that.
