After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Comments about Novara Portal Bike - 2010:

This bike is great for beginners. I really like the tire design, its great for dirt and low road noise on pavement. The frame of the bike is set up to add Disc Brakes for when you want to upgrade. I have had this bike for over a month and I have not had any problems with it.

            I just love this bike!
I put on hundreds of miles on the salt creek trail system after buying it last summer.

Very little friction, keeps up with hybrid bikes easily.

            Stops TOO fast. Be careful.

I bought this bike for my 12 year old son. He's taken it on single track trails around San Diego and some 30 mile road rides. It has taken some abuse but has performed perfectly. No problems at all.

Comments about Novara Portal Bike - 2010:

This is my first mountain bike having had a road bike for years. I bought this to ride trails and pull a kid trailer, seems a little slow to respond (pedaling) but I am assuming it is the nature of mountain bikes in general. I took it on a medium downhill trail and felt very confident about the construction and components. The brakes however have a definite learning curve as they are *VERY* sensitive (I nearly went over the bars the first time). My one minor gripe is that the forks do not have a lockout feature. I am no expert but the bike overall seems to be a great value for the money!

Comments about Novara Portal Bike - 2010:

This affordable bike rides great, it's fast and responsive. I found the seat uncomfortable though and I added new pedals with Power Grips. Rear view mirror attached well and I urge every rider to have one. Rode in rain and wind like a trooper! Really like this bike.

Bought the bike a couple nights ago. Its been 10 years since i rode a bike. Have been using my friends old 10 speed and did not like it so bought this bike. I am not in shape so this bike is more comfortable for my back. No complaints so far. Decent components and great price. You cant go wrong.

Comments about Novara Portal Bike - 2010:

This is a great bike. I've used it on singletrack, casual trails (gravel and dirt), road, and it works great on everything. I was looking to buy a bike for casual trail riding and occasioonally more intense terrain that was affordable and this one fit the bill perfectly. The bike holds up great, provides a smooth ride and seems to be built of solid parts. I took it up to palos (chicago-area singletrack) and it could definitely hold its own. The only problems I have with it is that the handlebar grips slide down so that you have to keep adjusting them. Also, I've tried taking it on rough terrain (steep downhill with a ton of tree roots sticking up) and it didn't seem like the shifting system appreciated it, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. Otherwise, FANTASTIC!!!!!
