Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
My wife and I took this to Europe for a week and a half and this bag hauled most of our gear. We used some packing cubes that really helped organize our stuff and the big zippered opening on the front was perfect. The top pocket was great for small stuff like passports, receipts and liquids for carrying it on. Fit perfectly in all the planes we took. When I used it the first time, the spine support down the middle poked into my back uncomfortably. It just needed to be bent a little, but I made the mistake of not trying on the full pack until right before we left. Can't recommend this more!

Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
Pack is comfortable to carry and easily fits in the overhead bin. The reason I do not use it on every trip is that it does not have a pocket for a notebook computer. I find it hard to carry two backpacks (one for the computer and one for the rest of my stuff). Another minor issue is the the lack in general of useful outside pockets. Most stuff must go inside the large opening which opens from the bottom, not top. This means access requires laying the pack out flat which is not always practical while in transit. The tiny pocket on top is handy, but not really large enough to hold all the things I need to access in transit. There is also a pocket on the side which runs the length of the pack. It is almost useless when the pack it full unless you only have flat papers. It looks like it would expand outwards, but really doesn't.

Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
I spent a total of 6 months in South America traveling with this pack. Its relative flatness means it will fit in the overhead rack of most buses, and the wrap around zipper allow for much easier stuff access than a top-loading design. Back-support is adequate. Waterproofing is not that great, so if you are planning on getting drenched a lot then this is not for you, but if you are living out of your pack for a long time, this is the perfect pack.

Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
I actually had the first version of this pack, but I just picked up the revision on sale here. Its essentially the same pack. I had one critique with the original model, but it's totally been fixed with this one! Backpacked throughout southeast asia with the first pack for a year and a half. The ability to load it from the front will allow you to efficiently pack your gear. I also used packing cubes. The straps handle the weight, are well padded and of good quality. The bag material is very durable and although I never had a problem with water leaking in during the rainstorms I was caught in, I still felt I should keep my electronics in waterproof bags inside. I think this bag had just enough pockets for the small things you accumulate while traveling.
If you are taking a RTW trip, I think this bag is of perfect size! You can still carry so much stuff because it's an efficient front loader, but the pack will still look very small on your back. If you have a 50L bag or bigger, it'll tempt you to take more. However, when traveling with this one, you will easily be one of the backpackers with the smallest bag out there.
I cannot recommend this bag more.

Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
... when the airline doesn't lose it. Bag accommodated a week's worth of clothing and travel essentials. Had to buy more clothing while in London until the bag finally arrived and was able to cram it all in. Bag is tough and handled all of abuse without issue. Only drawback was no shoulder strap though the eyelets are there. Bag is a little heavier so I bought a strap and all was well. Backpack option works great but not as comfortable as a dedicated pack. Bag was very useful overall.

Comments about REI Vagabond Travel Pack:
I borrowed my dad's new pack for a two week trip to visit a friend in Korea. I like to travel light, especially when flying and this pack had all the room I could want. It's the perfect size to get the most out of your carry-on capacity and the large opening is great for getting to all your stuff once you're there. The back pack straps take all the hassle out of lugging or wheeling your suitcase around the airport. Once you reach the gate you can tuck the straps in to avoid entangling situations for quick boarding. You can leave the straps tucked away to have a great bag on a weekend road trip, or take the pack for a long hike using the waist belt!
While in Korea I decided to take a hiking trip across Seoraksan National park. I unloaded a few unnecessary items, strapped a fleece bedroll on the bottom, and hiked up South Korea's third largest peak. It was a ten hour hike from one side of the park to the other so everything went with me. The pack couldn't have been better. The hip belt and shoulders straps were more than comfortable and the frame kept some space between the pack and my back. The rainy season was no problem because the rain cover fit snuggly all the way around the pack with openings to use the backpack straps. Because I had everything I needed with me, I was able to wait out the storm for a night at a shelter and continue on in the morning.
Versatility is the name of the game with this pack. It won't keep your shirts as freshly pressed as a hard case carry-on will, you won't get quite the same performance that you would with your favorite day hike pack, and it certainly won't carry everything you need for a full multi-day backpacking trip, but this pack exceeded my expectations in all these situations in the my trip.
